Giobbe 4
1 ED Elifaz Temanita rispose, e disse:
Then answered Eliphaz the Themanite, and said,
2 Se noi imprendiamo a parlarti, ti sarà egli molesto? Ma pur chi potrebbe rattener le parole?
If we essay to address a word to thee, wilt thou be wearied? yet who is able to refrain from speaking?
3 Ecco, tu correggevi molti, E rinforzavi le mani rimesse.
Behold, thou hast [ere this] corrected many, and weak hands thou wast wont to strengthen.
4 I tuoi ragionamenti ridirizzavano quelli che vacillavano, E tu raffermavi le ginocchia che piegavano.
Him that stumbled thy words used to uphold, and to sinking knees thou gavest vigor.
5 Ma ora che [il male] ti è avvenuto, tu te ne affanni; [Ora ch'è] giunto fino a te, tu ne sei smarrito.
Yet now, when it cometh to thee, thou art wearied: it toucheth even thee, and thou art terrified.
6 La tua pietà non [è] ella [stata] la tua speranza, [E] l'integrità delle tue vie la tua aspettazione?
Is not then thy fear of God still thy confidence, thy hope equal to the integrity of thy ways?
7 Deh! rammemorati, quale innocente perì mai, Ed ove furono gli [uomini] diritti [mai] distrutti?
Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous destroyed?
8 Siccome io ho veduto che quelli che arano l'iniquità, E seminano la perversità, la mietono.
Even as I have seen, that those who plough wrong-doing, and sow trouble, have to reap the same.
9 Essi periscono per l'alito di Dio, E son consumati dal soffiar delle sue nari.
Before the breathing of God they perish, and before the breath of his nostrils they come to their end.
10 Il ruggito del leone, e il grido del fier leone [son ribattuti]; E i denti de' leoncelli sono stritolati.
The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
11 Il vecchio leone perisce per mancamento di preda, E i figli della leonessa son dissipati.
The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness have to scatter themselves abroad.
12 Or mi è stata di nascosto significata una parola, E l'orecchio mio ne ha ritenuto un poco.
But to me a word came by stealth, and my ear took in a scarcely perceptible whisper thereof.
13 Fra le immaginazioni delle visioni notturne, Quando il più profondo sonno cade sopra gli uomini,
In intense thoughts out of visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men:
14 Mi è venuto uno spavento ed un tremito, Che ha spaventate tutte quante le mie ossa.
Dread came over me, with trembling, and it caused all my bones to shudder.
15 Ed uno spirito è passato davanti a me, Che mi ha fatto arricciare i peli della mia carne;
Then flitted a spirit past before my face; the hair of my body stood up:
16 Egli si è fermato, ed io non ho riconosciuto il suo aspetto; Una sembianza è stata davanti agli occhi miei, Ed io ho udita una voce sommessa [che diceva: ]
It stood still, but I could not recognize its form; a figure was before my eyes, a slight whisper, then a [louder] voice I heard, saying,
17 L'uomo sarebbe egli giustificato da Dio? L'uomo sarebbe egli giudicato puro dal suo fattore?
Can a mortal be more righteous than God? or can a man be more pure than his Maker?
18 Ecco, egli non si fida ne' suoi servitori, E scorge della temerità ne' suoi Angeli.
Behold, in his servants he putteth no trust, and his angels he chargeth with folly:
19 Quanto più in coloro che abitano in case di fango, Il cui fondamento [è] nella polvere, E che son ridotti in polvere, esposti a' vermi?
How much less in those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed till they come to be eaten by the moth?
20 Dalla mattina alla sera sono stritolati, E periscono in perpetuo, senza che alcuno vi ponga mente.
From morning to evening are they broken to pieces: without laying it [to heart] they perish for ever.
21 L'eccellenza ch'era in loro non si diparte ella? Muoiono, ma non con sapienza.
Behold, their excellency which is in them is torn away: they die, and this without wisdom.
