Matteo 3
1 OR in que' giorni venne Giovanni Battista, predicando nel deserto della Giudea, e dicendo:
In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea saying,
2 Ravvedetevi, perciocchè il regno de' cieli è vicino.
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”
3 Perciocchè questo [Giovanni] è quello del qual fu parlato dal profeta Isaia, dicendo: [Vi è] una voce d'uno che grida nel deserto: Acconciate la via del Signore, addirizzate i suoi sentieri.
For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, “The voice of one calling out in the wilderness, 'Make ready the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'”
4 Or esso Giovanni avea il suo vestimento di pel di cammello, ed una cintura di cuoio intorno a' lombi, e il suo cibo erano locuste e miele salvatico.
Now John wore clothing of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.
5 Allora Gerusalemme, e tutta la Giudea, e tutta la contrada d'intorno al Giordano, uscirono a lui.
Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan River went out to him.
6 Ed erano battezzati da lui nel Giordano, confessando i lor peccati.
They were baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins.
7 Or egli, veggendo molti de' Farisei e de' Sadducei venire al suo battesimo, disse loro: Progenie di vipere, chi vi ha mostrato di fuggir dall'ira a venire?
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to him for baptism, he said to them, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath that is coming?
8 Fate adunque frutti degni dal ravvedimento.
Bear fruit worthy of repentance.
9 E non pensate di dir fra voi stessi: Noi abbiamo Abrahamo per padre; perciocchè io vi dico, che Iddio può, eziandio da queste pietre, far sorgere dei figliuoli ad Abrahamo.
Do not think of saying among yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father.' For I say to you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham even out of these stones.
10 Or già è ancora posta la scure alla radice degli alberi; ogni albero adunque che non fa buon frutto, sarà di presente tagliato, e gettato nel fuoco.
Already the ax has been placed against the root of the trees. So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire.
11 Ben vi battezzo io con acqua, a ravvedimento; ma colui che viene dietro a me è più forte di me, le cui suole io non son degno di portare; egli vi battezzerà con lo Spirito Santo e col fuoco.
I baptize you with water for repentance. But he who comes after me is mightier than I, and I am not worthy even to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
12 Egli ha la sua ventola in mano, e monderà interamente l'aia sua, e raccoglierà il suo grano nel granaio; ma arderà la paglia col fuoco inestinguibile.
His winnowing fork is in his hand to thoroughly clear off his threshing floor and to gather his wheat into the storehouse. But he will burn up the chaff with fire that can never be put out.”
13 ALLORA venne Gesù di Galilea al Giordano a Giovanni, per esser da lui battezzato.
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John.
14 Ma Giovanni lo divietava forte, dicendo: Io ho bisogno di esser battezzato da te, e tu vieni a me!
But John kept trying to stop him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
15 E Gesù, rispondendo, gli disse: Lascia al presente; perciocchè così ci conviene adempiere ogni giustizia. Allora egli lo lasciò [fare].
Jesus responded and said to him, “Permit it now, for it is right for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John permitted him.
16 E Gesù, tosto che fu battezzato, salì fuor dell'acqua; ed ecco, i cieli gli si apersero, ed egli vide lo Spirito di Dio scendere in somiglianza di colomba, e venire sopra di esso.
After he was baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and resting upon him.
17 Ed ecco una voce dal cielo, che disse: Questo è il mio diletto Figliuolo, nel quale io prendo il mio compiacimento.
Behold, a voice came out of the heavens saying, “This is my beloved Son. I am very pleased with him.”
