Giobbe 15
1 ED Elifaz Temanita rispose e disse:
Then answered Eliphaz the Themanite, and said,
2 Deve un uomo savio pronunziare opinioni vane, Ed empiersi il ventre di vento orientale?
Should a wise man utter windy knowledge, and fill his inward parts with the east wind?
3 Ed argomentar con parole inutili, E [con] ragionamenti onde non può trarre alcun vantaggio?
Should he reason with a speech which availeth nothing? and with words in which there is no profit?
4 Sì certo, tu annulli il timor [di Dio], Ed impedisci l'orazione [che deve farsi] davanti a lui.
Yea, thou truly makest void the fear [of God], and diminishest devotion before God.
5 Perciocchè la tua bocca dimostra la tua iniquità, Poichè tu hai scelto il parlar de' frodolenti.
For thy iniquity teacheth thy mouth, so that thou choosest the language of the crafty.
6 La tua bocca ti condanna, e non io; E le tue labbra testificano contro a te.
Thy own mouth must condemn thee, but not I: yea, thy own lips will testify against thee.
7 [Sei] tu il primiero uomo che sia nato [nel mondo?] O sei tu stato formato avanti i colli?
Wast thou born as the first man? or wast thou brought forth before the hills?
8 Hai tu udito il segreto di Dio, E ne hai tu sottratta a te la sapienza?
Hast thou listened to the secret counsel of God? and is wisdom therefore of little esteem with thee?
9 Che sai tu, che noi non sappiamo? [Che] intendi tu, che non sia appo noi?
What knowest thou, that we do not know? what understandest thou, which is not with us?
10 Fra noi [vi è] eziandio alcun canuto, alcun molto vecchio, Più attempato che tuo padre.
Both the grayheaded and the very aged are among us, — richer than thy father in days.
11 [Son] le consolazioni di Dio troppo poca cosa per te? Hai tu alcuna cosa riposta appo te?
Are the divine consolations too little for thee? and the word that was so mild with thee?
12 Perchè ti trasporta il cuor tuo? E perchè ammiccano gli occhi tuoi,
Whither doth thy heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes gaze at?
13 Che tu rivolga il tuo soffio, E proferisca della tua bocca parole contro a Dio?
That thou shouldst turn against God thy spirit, and utter [such] words out of thy mouth?
14 Che cosa [è] l'uomo, ch'egli sia puro? E [che cosa è] chi [è] nato di donna, ch'egli sia giusto?
What is man, that he should be pure? and that he who is born of woman should be declared righteous?
15 Ecco, egli non si fida ne' suoi santi, Ed i cieli non son puri nel suo cospetto;
Behold, in his holy ones he putteth no trust; and the heavens are not pure in his eyes:
16 Quanto più abbominevole e puzzolente [È] l'uomo, che beve l'iniquità come acqua?
How much more then the abominable and corrupt, the man who drinketh like water wrong-doing?
17 Io ti dichiarerò, ascoltami pure, E ti racconterò ciò che io ho veduto;
I will instruct thee, hear me; and what I have seen will I relate;
18 Il che i savi hanno narrato, E non l'hanno celato, [avendolo ricevuto] da' padri loro;
Which wise men have ever told, and have not concealed, as they obtained it from their fathers;
19 A' quali soli la terra fu data, E per mezzo [i] cui [paesi] non passò mai straniero.
Unto whom alone the earth was given, and into whose midst no stranger ever entered.
20 L'empio è tormentato tutti i giorni della sua vita; Ed al violento è riposto un piccol numero d'anni.
All his days is the wicked plagued with pain, and the number of years which are laid by for the tyrant.
21 [Egli ha] negli orecchi un romor di spaventi; In tempo di pace il guastatore gli sopraggiunge.
A sound of terrors is in his ears: during peace will the waster come over him.
22 Egli non si fida punto di potere uscir delle tenebre; Egli sta [sempre] in guato, aspettando la spada.
He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is looked for by the sword.
23 Egli va tapinando per [cercar] dove [sia] del pane; Egli sa che ha in mano tutto presto il giorno delle tenebre.
He wandereth abroad for bread, [saying, ] Where is it? he knoweth that there is ready at his hand the day of darkness.
24 Angoscia e tribolazione lo spaventano; Lo sopraffanno come un re apparecchiato alla battaglia.
Distress and anguish terrify him: they assail him with might, as a king prepared for the battle.
25 Perciocchè egli ha distesa la sua mano contro a Dio, E si è rinforzato contro all'Onnipotente;
Because he had stretched out against God his hand, and strengthened himself against the Almighty;
26 [E] gli è corso col collo [fermo], Co' suoi spessi e rilevati scudi;
[And] he had run against him, with an [extended] neck, with the thick roundings of his bucklers;
27 Perciocchè egli ha coperto il suo viso di grasso, Ed ha fatte delle pieghe sopra i suoi fianchi;
Because he had covered his face with his fat, and had made thick folds of fat on his flanks;
28 Ed è abitato in città desolate, in case disabitate, Ch'erano preste ad [esser ridotte in] monti di ruine.
And he dwelt in abandoned cities, in houses which none inhabited, which were destined to be ruinous heaps.
29 Egli non arricchirà, e le sue facoltà non saranno stabili, E il suo colmo non si spanderà nella terra.
[Yet] will he not remain rich, neither will his wealth endure, nor will he attain their perfection on earth.
30 Egli non si dipartirà giammai dalle tenebre, La fiamma seccherà i suoi rampolli, Ed egli sarà portato via dal soffio della bocca di Dio.
He will never depart out of darkness: the flame shall dry up his shoots, and he will depart by the breath of God's mouth.
31 Non confidisi già nella vanità, [dalla quale è] sedotto; Perciocchè egli muterà stato, e sarà ridotto al niente.
Let him that goeth astray not trust in vanity; for vanity will be what he obtaineth thereby.
32 [Questo mutamento] si compierà fuor del suo tempo, E i suoi rami non verdeggeranno.
Even before his time will it be overfull, and his branches will not be green.
33 Il suo agresto sarà rapito come quel d'una vigna, E le sue gemme saranno sbattute come quelle di un ulivo.
He will shake off like the vine his unripe grapes, and cast off like the olive his blossoms.
34 Perciocchè la raunanza de' profani [sarà] deserta, E il fuoco divorerà i tabernacoli di [quelli che prendon] presenti;
For the assembly of hypocrites will remain desolate, and fire will consume the tents of bribery.
35 [I quali] concepiscono perversità, e partoriscono iniquità, E il cui ventre macchina fraude.
They conceive trouble, and bring forth wrong-doing, and their body prepareth deceit.
