Hebrews 7
1 And this Melchisedech, king of Salem, and preest of the hiyeste God, which mette with Abraham, as he turnede ayen fro the sleyng of kyngis, and blesside hym;
En effet, ce Melchisédek, «roi de Salem, prêtre du Dieu Très-Haut», qui alla au-devant d'Abraham, revenant de vaincre les rois, et le bénit,
2 to whom also Abraham departide tithis of alle thingis; first he is seid king of riytwisnesse, and aftirward kyng of Salem, that is to seie, king of pees,
qui reçut d'Abraham «la dîme de tout», dont le nom signifie d'abord roi de justice («roi de Salem», qui vient ensuite, veut dire roi de paix),
3 with out fadir, with out modir, with out genologie, nether hauynge bigynnyng of daies, nether ende of lijf; and he is lickened to the sone of God, and dwellith preest with outen ende.
qui est sans père, sans mère, sans généalogie, dont les jours et la vie n'ont ni commencement, ni fin, qui est absolument assimilé au Fils de Dieu, reste «prêtre à perpétuité».
4 But biholde ye how greet is this, to whom Abraham the patriark yaf tithis of the beste thingis.
Voyez maintenant comme il doit être grand, celui auquel Abraham lui-même, le patriarche, a donné une dîme prise sur les prémices de son butin.
5 For men of the sones of Leuy takinge presthod han maundement to take tithis of the puple, bi the lawe, that is to seie, of her britheren, thouy also thei wenten out of the leendis of Abraham.
Or, la Loi ordonne à ceux des enfants des Lévites qui reçoivent la prêtrise de lever la dîme sur le peuple, c'est-à-dire sur leurs frères, bien qu'ils soient également issus d'Abraham,
6 But he whos generacioun is not noumbrid in hem, took tithis of Abraham; and he blesside this Abraham, which hadde repromyssiouns.
et voilà que celui qui n'est pas de leur famille a levé la dîme sur Abraham et a béni celui qui avait reçu les promesses!
7 With outen ony ayenseiyng, that that is lesse, is blessid of the betere.
Mais, de l'aveu de tous, c'est l'inférieur qui est béni par le supérieur;
8 And heere deedli men taken tithis; but there he berith witnessyng, that he lyueth.
de plus, ce sont ici des hommes mortels qui perçoivent la dîme, là c'est quelqu'un dont il est attesté qu'il possède la vie;
9 And that it be seid so, bi Abraham also Leuy, that took tithis, was tithid; and yit he was in his fadris leendis,
et Lévi lui-même, pour ainsi dire, lui qui doit percevoir la dîme, l'a payée dans la personne d'Abraham,
10 whanne Melchisedech mette with hym.
car il était encore dans les reins de son père quand Melchisédek alla au-devant de ce patriarche.
11 Therfor if perfeccioun was bi the preesthood of Leuy, for vndur hym the puple took the lawe, what yit was it nedeful, another preest to rise, bi the ordre of Melchisedech, and not to be seid bi the ordre of Aaron?
Si l'on avait pu réaliser la perfection par le sacerdoce lévitique (car la législation donnée au peuple a pour base ce sacerdoce), pourquoi fallait-il qu'il parût un autre «prêtre» «selon l'ordre de Melchisédek» pourquoi pas selon l'ordre d'Aaron?
12 For whi whanne the preesthod is translatid, it is nede that also translacioun of the lawe be maad.
Au changement de l'ordre du sacerdoce correspond nécessairement un changement de Loi;
13 But he in whom these thingis ben seid, is of another lynage, of which no man was preest to the auter.
et celui auquel s'appliquent ces paroles, appartient à une, autre tribu dont aucun membre n'a servi à l'autel.
14 For it is opyn, that oure Lord is borun of Juda, in which lynage Moises spak no thing of preestis.
Il est notoire, en effet, que notre Seigneur est issu de Juda, et Moïse n'a jamais parlé de prêtres de cette tribu.
15 And more yit it is knowun, if bi the ordre of Melchisedech another preest is risun vp;
Et tout cela devient plus évident encore quand c'est «à l'instar de Melchisédek» que paraît un autre «prêtre»
16 which is not maad bi the lawe of fleischli maundement, but bi vertu of lijf that may not be vndon.
nommé en vertu de sa vie impérissable et nullement par une loi ou un commandement charnel.
17 For he witnessith, That thou art a preest with outen ende, bi the ordre of Melchisedech; (aiōn g165)
Voici, en effet, le témoignage qui lui est rendu: «Tu es prêtre à tout jamais Selon l'ordre de Melchisédek» (aiōn g165)
18 that repreuyng of the maundement bifor goynge is maad, for the vnsadnesse and vnprofit of it.
La Loi ancienne a été abrogée parce qu'elle était impuissante et inutile.
19 For whi the lawe brouyt no thing to perfeccioun, but there is a bringing in of a betere hope, bi which we neiyen to God.
Elle n'a rien amené à la perfection et, à la place, est introduite une meilleure espérance par laquelle nous nous approchons de Dieu.
20 And hou greet it is, not with out sweryng; but the othere ben maad preestis with outen an ooth;
Et il y a eu un serment de prêté; les prêtres étaient consacrés sans que personne prêtât serment,
21 but this preest with an ooth, bi hym that seide `to hym, The Lord swoor, and it schal not rewe hym, Thou art a preest with outen ende, bi the ordre of Melchisedech; (aiōn g165)
mais lui a été consacré avec le serment de Celui qui a dit: «Le Seigneur a juré et il ne s'en repentira pas; Tu es prêtre à tout jamais.» (aiōn g165)
22 in so myche Jhesus is maad biheetere of the betere testament.
Par là même, Jésus est devenu le garant d'une meilleure alliance.
23 And the othere weren maad manye preestis, `therfor for thei weren forbedun bi deth to dwelle stille;
De plus, il y a eu une succession de prêtres, parce que la mort les empêchait de continuer leurs fonctions.
Mais lui, qui est nommé «à tout jamais», possède le sacerdoce intransmissible. (aiōn g165)
25 Wherfor also he may saue with outen ende, comynge nyy bi hym silf to God, and euermore lyueth to preye for vs.
Et voilà pourquoi il peut sauver parfaitement ceux qui, par lui, s'approchent de Dieu, puisqu'il vit toujours pour intercéder en leur faveur.
26 For it bisemyde that sich a man were a bischop to vs, hooli, innocent, vndefoulid, clene, departid fro synful men, and maad hiyere than heuenes;
Qu'il était bien le grand-prêtre qu'il nous fallait, saint, innocent, sans tache, séparé des pécheurs et élevé au-dessus des cieux!
27 which hath not nede ech dai, as prestis, first for hise owne giltis to offre sacrifices, and aftirward for the puple; for he dide this thing in offringe hym silf onys.
qui n'est pas tous les jours obligé comme les autres grands-prêtres d'offrir des sacrifices pour ses propres péchés d'abord, pour ceux du peuple ensuite — (cela il l'a fait une fois pour toutes en s'offrant lui-même), —
28 And the lawe ordeynede men prestis hauynge sijknesse; but the word of swering, which is after the lawe, ordeynede the sone perfit with outen ende. (aiōn g165)
car la Loi institue grands-prêtres des hommes pleins de faiblesse; or la parole du serment prêté après la Loi institue un Fils arrivé pour jamais à la perfection! (aiōn g165)
