Hebrews 6
1 Therfor we bringinge in a word of the bigynnyng of Crist, be we borun to the perfeccioun of hym, not eftsoone leggynge the foundement of penaunce fro deed werkis, and of the feith to God,
Laissons donc les commencements de ce qu'il y a à dire sur le Christ, mettons-nous à ce qu'il y a de plus achevé, ne recommençons pas à poser les principes fondamentaux: renoncement aux oeuvres mortes, foi en Dieu,
2 and of teching of baptimys, and of leiynge on of hondis, and of risyng ayen of deed men, and of the euerlastinge doom. (aiōnios g166)
doctrine des baptêmes, imposition des mains, résurrection des morts, jugement éternel. (aiōnios g166)
3 And this thing we schulen do, if God schal suffre.
Tout cela nous le ferons, si Dieu le permet.
4 But it is impossible, that thei that ben onys liytned, and `han tastid also an heuenly yifte, and ben maad parceneris of the Hooli Goost,
Car il est impossible que ceux qui ont été une fois éclairés, qui ont goûté le don céleste, qui ont eu part à l'Esprit saint,
5 and netheles han tastid the good word of God, and the vertues of the world to comynge, (aiōn g165)
qui ont goûté l'excellente parole de Dieu et les richesses du monde à venir (aiōn g165)
6 and ben slidun fer awei, that thei be renewid eftsoone to penaunce. Whiche eftsones crucifien to hem silf the sone of God, and han to scorn.
et qui retombent, soient ramenés à la repentance par une seconde régénération, eux qui, pour leur propre compte, remettent en croix le Fils de Dieu et le vouent aux outrages!
7 For the erthe that drinkith reyn ofte comynge on it, and bringith forth couenable erbe to hem of whiche it is tilid, takith blessing of God.
En effet, une terre, arrosée par des pluies fréquentes et produisant des plantes utiles à ceux pour lesquels elle est cultivée, a part à la bénédiction de Dieu.
8 But that that is bringinge forth thornes and breris, is repreuable, and next to curs, whos endyng schal be in to brennyng.
Mais si elle ne rapporte que des épines et des chardons», on l'abandonne, on la déclare presque maudite, on finit par y mettre le feu.
9 But, ye moost dereworthe, we tristen of you betere thingis, and neer to helthe, thouy we speken so.
Cependant, bien-aimés, malgré ce langage, nous croyons pour vous à tout ce qu'il y a de mieux, à ce qui mène au salut.
10 For God is not vniust, that he foryete youre werk and loue, whiche ye han schewid in his name; for ye han mynystrid to seyntis, `and mynistren.
Dieu est trop juste pour oublier votre activité, l'amour que vous avez montré pour son nom, les services passés et présents rendus par vous aux fidèles.
11 And we coueiten that ech of you schewe the same bisynesse to the fillyng of hope in to the ende;
Nous désirons bien que chacun de vous montre jusqu'au bout le même zèle à affermir de plus en plus son espérance
12 that ye be not maad slowe, but also sueris of hem, whiche bi feith and pacience schulen enherite the biheestis.
de manière à ne pas vous relâcher, mais à imiter ceux que leur foi et leur persévérance ont mis en possession de l'héritage promis.
13 For God bihetinge to Abraham, for he hadde noon grettere, bi whom he schulde swere, swoor bi hym silf,
Quand Dieu fit sa promesse à Abraham (comme il ne pouvait prêter serment au nom d'un plus grand que lui, «il prêta serment sur son propre nom»),
14 and seide, Y blessinge schal blesse thee, and Y multipliynge schal multiplie thee;
il dit: «Certes je te comblerai de bénédictions; certes je multiplierai beaucoup tes descendants».
15 and so he long abidinge hadde the biheeste.
Et alors, sa persévérance lui obtint ce qui lui avait été promis.
16 For men sweren bi a grettere than hem silf, and the ende of al her ple is an ooth to confirmacioun.
Les hommes, en effet, prêtent serment sur un plus grand qu'eux, et leur serment est une garantie, il met fin à toutes leurs discussions.
17 In which thing God willynge to schewe plenteuouslier to the eiris of his biheest the sadnesse of his counsel,
Eh bien, Dieu, voulant expressément montrer à ceux qui devaient recevoir l'héritage promis que sa volonté est immuable, intervint par un serment,
18 puttide bitwixe an ooth, that bi twey thingis vnmeuable, bi whiche it is impossible that God lie, we han a strengeste solace, `we that fleen togidere to holde the hope that is put forth to vs.
et il l'a fait pour que, par deux choses immuables, par lesquelles il était impossible que Dieu mentît, nous ayons un puissant encouragement qui soit notre refuge, nous saisissions l'espérance qui s'offre à nous.
19 Which hope as an ankir we han sikir to the soule, and sad, and goynge in to the ynnere thingis of hiding;
Oui, cette espérance nous la tenons comme l'ancre de notre âme, ferme et solide, «elle pénètre dans le sanctuaire, derrière le voile»,
