Hebrews 4

1 Let us then fear, since a promise is still left us of entering into his rest, lest any one of you should appear to fail of obtaining it.

Craignons donc, puisque la promesse d'entrer dans Son repos subsiste encore, que quelqu'un de vous ne paraisse y avoir renoncé;

2 For to us were glad tidings addressed, as well as to them; but the word which was heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.

car, nous aussi, nous avons reçu cette bonne nouvelle comme ceux-là, mais la parole qu'ils ont ouïe ne leur a servi de rien, parce qu'ils ne se sont pas intimement unis par la foi à ceux qui l'ont écoutée:

3 For we who believed enter into the rest, as he hath said: “So I swore in my wrath, they shall not enter into my rest;” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

En effet, nous qui avons cru, nous entrons dans le repos, selon qu'il dit: « Voici le serment que J'ai fait dans Ma colère: Jamais ils n'entreront dans Mon repos, » quoique Ses œuvres fussent accomplies depuis la fondation du monde;

4 For he hath spoken in a certain place of the seventh day thus: “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works;”

car, touchant le septième jour, Il s'exprime quelque part ainsi: « Et Dieu se reposa le septième jour de toutes Ses œuvres;

5 and in this place again: “They shall not enter into my rest.”

et Il dit, d'un autre côté, dans ce passage-là: « Jamais ils n'entreront dans Mon repos. »

6 Since then it still remaineth for some to enter into it, and they to whom the glad tidings of it were first brought did not enter in because of disobedience,

Puis donc qu'on doit encore s'attendre à ce que quelques-uns y entrent, et puisque ceux qui avaient, les premiers, reçu la bonne nouvelle n'y sont pas entrés à cause de leur désobéissance;

7 he again appointeth a certain day, “To-day”—saying in David so long a time after, as hath before been said—”To-day, if ye hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”

Il fixe derechef un certain jour, « aujourd'hui, » en disant dans la personne de David, après un si long espace de temps, comme Il l'a dit ci-dessus: « Aujourd'hui, si vous entendez Sa voix, n'endurcissez pas vos cœurs;

8 For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not after this be speaking of another day.

en effet, si Josué leur avait donné le repos, Il n'aurait certes pas, après cela, parlé d'un autre jour.

9 There remaineth therefore a sabbath-rest to the people of God.

Ainsi un repos sabbatique attend encore le peuple de Dieu,

10 For he that hath entered into his rest, hath himself rested from his works, as God did from his own.

car celui qui entre dans Son repos, se repose, lui aussi, de ses œuvres, comme Dieu s'est reposé des siennes.

11 Let us then strive to enter into that rest, that no one may fall, as a like example of disobedience.

Appliquons-nous donc à entrer dans ce repos, afin que personne ne donne, en tombant, le même exemple de désobéissance;

12 For the word of God is living, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, both the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart;

car la parole de Dieu est vivante, et évidente, et plus tranchante que toute épée à deux tranchants, et si pénétrante qu'elle divise l'âme et l'esprit, jusques dans les jointures et les moelles, et elle juge les pensées et les dispositions du cœur,

13 and there is no creature that is not manifest in his sight; but all things are naked and laid open to the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

et aucune créature ne lui est cachée; mais toutes choses sont nues et découvertes aux yeux de Celui avec qui nous avons affaire.

14 Since, then, we have a great high-priest, who hath passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

Ayant donc un grand prêtre suprême qui a traversé les cieux, Jésus le fils de Dieu, restons fermement attachés à notre confession;

15 For we have not a high-priest who cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who hath in all points been tempted as we are, without sin.

car nous n'avons pas un grand prêtre qui ne peut pas compatir à nos faiblesses, mais il a au contraire été tenté en toutes choses d'une manière semblable, sans pécher;

16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

approchons-nous donc, avec une ferme assurance, du trône de la grâce, afin de recevoir, par la miséricorde et la grâce, un secours opportun.
