Proverbs 30
1 The words of the Gatherer, the son of the Vomiter. The vision that the man spoke. God is with him, and he, being strengthened by God and abiding with him, said:
Les paroles d'Agur fils de Jaké, [savoir] la charge que cet homme-là proféra à Ithiel, à Ithiel, [dis-je], et à Ucal.
2 “I am the most foolish among men, and the wisdom of men is not with me.
Certainement je suis le plus hébété de tous les hommes, et il n'y a point en moi de prudence humaine.
3 I have not learned wisdom, and I have not known the knowledge of sanctity.
Et je n'ai point appris la sagesse; et saurais-je la science des saints?
4 Who has ascended to heaven and also descended? Who has grasped the wind in his hands? Who has tied the waters together, as with a garment? Who has raised all the limits of the earth? What is his name, and what is the name of his son, if you know?
Qui est celui qui est monté aux cieux, et qui en est descendu? Qui est celui qui a renfermé le vent dans ses poings, qui a serré les eaux dans son manteau, qui a dressé toutes les bornes de la terre? Quel est son nom, et quel est le nom de son fils, si tu le connais?
5 Every word of God is fire-tested. He is a bronze shield to those who hope in him.
Toute la parole de Dieu est épurée; il est un bouclier à ceux qui ont leur refuge vers lui.
6 Do not add anything to his words, lest you be reproved and be discovered to be a liar.
N'ajoute rien à ses paroles, de peur qu'il ne te reprenne, et que tu ne sois [trouvé] menteur.
7 Two things I have asked of you; do not deny them to me before I die.
Je t'ai demandé deux choses, ne me les refuse point durant ma vie.
8 Remove, far from me, vanity and lying words. Give me neither begging, nor wealth. Apportion to me only the necessities of my life,
Eloigne de moi la vanité, et la parole de mensonge; ne me donne ni pauvreté ni richesses, nourris-moi du pain de mon ordinaire.
9 lest perhaps, being filled, I might be enticed into denial, and say: ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or, being compelled by destitution, I might steal, and then perjure myself in the name of my God.
De peur qu'étant rassasié je ne te renie, et que je ne dise: qui est l'Eternel? de peur aussi qu'étant appauvri, je ne dérobe, et que je ne prenne [en vain] le nom de mon Dieu.
10 Do not accuse a servant to his lord, lest he curse you, and you fall.
Ne blâme point le serviteur devant son maître, de peur que [ce serviteur] ne te maudisse, et qu'il ne t'en arrive du mal.
11 There is a generation which curses their father, and which does not bless their mother.
Il y a une race de gens qui maudit son père, et qui ne bénit point sa mère.
12 There is a generation which seems pure to themselves, and yet they are not even washed from their filthiness.
Il y a une race de gens qui pense être nette, et qui toutefois n'est point lavée de son ordure.
13 There is a generation, whose eyes have been elevated, and their eyelids are lifted on high.
Il y a une race de gens de laquelle les yeux sont fort hautains, et dont les paupières sont élevées.
14 There is a generation which has swords in place of teeth, and which commands their molars to devour the indigent from the earth and the poor from among men.
Il y a une race de gens dont les dents sont des épées, et dont les dents mâchelières sont des couteaux, pour consumer de dessus la terre les affligés et les nécessiteux d'entre les hommes.
15 The leech has two daughters, who say, ‘Bring, bring.’ Three things are insatiable, and a fourth never says ‘Enough’:
La sangsue a deux filles, [qui disent]: Apporte, apporte. Il y a trois choses qui ne se rassasient point; il y en a même quatre qui ne disent point; C'est assez:
16 Hell, and the mouth of the womb, and a land that is not filled with water. And truly, fire never says, ‘Enough.’ (Sheol h7585)
Le sépulcre, la matrice stérile, la terre qui n'est point rassasiée d'eau, et le feu qui ne dit point: C'est assez. (Sheol h7585)
17 The eye of one who mocks his father and who despises the childbearing of his mother, let the ravens of the torrent tear it out, and let the sons of the eagles consume it.
L'œil [de celui] qui se moque de son père, et qui méprise l'enseignement de sa mère, les corbeaux des torrents le crèveront, et les petits de l'aigle le mangeront.
18 Three things are difficult for me, and about a fourth, I am nearly ignorant:
Il y a trois choses qui sont trop merveilleuses pour moi, même quatre, [lesquelles] je ne connais point;
19 the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship in the middle of the sea, and the way of a man in adolescence.
Savoir, la trace de l'aigle dans l'air, la trace du serpent sur un rocher, le chemin d'un navire au milieu de la mer, et la trace de l'homme vers la vierge.
20 Such is the way also of an adulterous woman, who eats, and wiping her mouth, says: “I have done no evil.”
Telle est la trace de la [femme] adultère; elle mange, et s'essuie la bouche, puis elle dit: Je n'ai point commis d'iniquité.
21 By three things, the earth is moved, and a fourth it is not able to sustain:
La terre tremble pour trois choses, même pour quatre, lesquelles elle ne peut porter:
22 by a slave when he reigns, by the foolish when he has been filled with food,
Pour le serviteur quand il règne; pour l'insensé quand il est rassasié de viande;
23 by a hateful woman when she has been taken in matrimony, and by a handmaid when she has been heir to her mistress.
Pour la [femme] digne d'être haïe, quand elle se marie; et pour la servante quand elle hérite de sa maîtresse.
24 Four things are least upon the earth, and they are wiser than the wise:
Il y a quatre choses très-petites en la terre qui toutefois sont bien sages et bien avisées:
25 the ants, an infirm people who provide food for themselves at the harvest,
Les fourmis, qui sont un peuple faible, et qui néanmoins préparent durant l'été leur nourriture.
26 the rabbit, a sickened people who make their bed upon the rock.
Les lapins, qui sont un peuple sans force, et qui néanmoins font leurs maisons dans les rochers;
27 The locust has no king, but they all depart by their troops.
Les sauterelles, qui n'ont point de Roi, et qui toutefois vont toutes par bandes.
28 The lizard supports itself on hands and dwells in the buildings of kings.
L'araignée, qui saisit [les mouches] avec ses pieds, et qui est pourtant dans les palais des Rois.
29 There are three things that advance well, and a fourth that marches happily on:
Il y a trois choses qui ont un beau marcher, même quatre, qui ont une belle démarche:
30 a lion, the strongest of beasts, who fears nothing that he meets,
Le lion, qui est le plus fort d'entre les bêtes, et qui ne tourne point en arrière pour la rencontre de qui que ce soit;
31 a rooster prepared at the loins, likewise a ram, and a king, whom none can resist.
[Le cheval], qui a les flancs bien troussés; le bouc; et le Roi, devant qui personne ne peut subsister.
32 There is one who has appeared foolish, after he was lifted up on high; for if he had understood, he would have placed his hand over his mouth.
Si tu t'es porté follement en t'élevant, et si tu as mal pensé, mets ta main sur la bouche.
33 But whoever strongly squeezes the udder to bring out the milk, presses out butter. And whoever violently blows his nose, brings out blood. And whoever provokes wrath, brings forth discord.”
Comme celui qui bat le lait, en fait sortir le beurre; et celui qui presse le nez, en fait sortir le sang; ainsi celui qui presse la colère, excite la querelle.
