ʻEfesō 4

1 Pea ko eni, ko au ko e pōpula ʻae ʻEiki, ʻoku ou kole kiate kimoutolu, ke mou ʻaʻeva ʻo taau mo e ui ʻaia kuo uiuiʻi ʻaki ʻakimoutolu,

I, then, the prisoner for the Master's sake, entreat you to live and act as becomes those who have received the call that you have received--

2 ‌ʻI he angavaivai kotoa pē mo e angamalū, mo e kātaki fuoloa, ʻo fekātakiʻaki ʻi he ʻofa;

with all lowliness of mind and unselfishness, and with patience, bearing with one another lovingly, and earnestly striving to maintain,

3 ‌ʻO ʻahiʻahi lahi ke tauhi ʻae feʻofoʻofani ʻoe Laumālie ʻi he noʻo ʻoe melino.

in the uniting bond of peace, the unity given by the Spirit.

4 ‌ʻOku taha pe ʻae sino pea taha ʻae Laumālie, ʻio, ʻo hangē kuo ui ʻakimoutolu ki he ʻamanaki lelei pe taha ʻo homou uiuiʻi;

There is but one body and but one Spirit, as also when you were called you had one and the same hope held out to you.

5 Ko e ʻEiki pe taha, ko e tui pe taha, ko e papitaiso pe taha,

There is but one Lord, one faith, one baptism,

6 Ko e ʻOtua pe taha mo e Tamai ʻatautolu kotoa pē, ʻaia ʻoku māʻolunga he meʻa kotoa pē, pea ʻi he meʻa kotoa pē, pea ʻoku nofoʻia ʻakimoutolu kotoa pē.

and one God and Father of all, who rules over all, acts through all, and dwells in all.

7 Ka kuo foaki kiate kitautolu taki taha kotoa pē ʻae ʻofa, ʻo fakatatau ki hono lahi ʻoe foaki ʻa Kalaisi.

Yet to each of us individually grace was given, measured out with the munificence of Christ.

8 Ko ia ʻoku ne pehē ai, “ʻI heʻene ʻalu hake ki ʻolunga, naʻa ne taki pōpula ʻae fakapōpula, ʻo ne ʻatu ʻae ngaahi foaki ki he kakai.”

For this reason Scripture says: "He re-ascended on high, He led captive a host of captives, and gave gifts to men."

9 (Pea ko ʻene “ʻalu hake,” ko e hā ia ka koeʻuhi naʻe tomuʻa ʻalu hifo ia ki he ngaahi potu ʻi mama ki lalo ni?

(Now this "re-ascended" --what does it mean but that He had first descended into the lower regions of the earth?

10 Ko ia naʻa ne ʻalu hifo, ko ia ia foki naʻa ne ʻalu hake ʻo māʻolunga lahi ʻaupito ʻi he ngaahi langi kotoa pē, koeʻuhi ke ne fakafonu ʻae ngaahi meʻa kotoa pē.)

He who descended is the same as He who ascended again far above all the Heavens in order to fill the universe.)

11 Pea “naʻa ne foaki ʻae niʻihi,” ko e kau ʻaposetolo; mo e niʻihi, ko e kau palōfita; mo e niʻihi, ko e kau ʻevangeliō; mo e niʻihi, ko e kau faifekau mo e kau akonaki;

And He Himself appointed some to be Apostles, some to be Prophets, some to be evangelists, some to be pastors and teachers,

12 Ko hono fakahaohaoa ʻoe kakai māʻoniʻoni, mo e ngāue fakafaifekau, ke langa hake ʻae sino ʻo Kalaisi:

in order fully to equip His people for the work of serving--for the building up of Christ's body--

13 Kae ʻoua ke tau hoko kotoa pē ki he fakataha ʻi he tui, pea mo e ʻiloʻi ʻoe ʻAlo ʻoe ʻOtua, ki he tangata haohaoa, ki he fuofua ʻo hono lahi ʻoe fonu ʻo Kalaisi:

till we all of us arrive at oneness in faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, and at mature manhood and the stature of full-grown men in Christ.

14 Koeʻuhi ke ʻoua naʻa tau kei fakatamaiki, ʻo feliliʻaki, mo feʻaveʻaki fano ʻe he matangi ʻoe akonaki kotoa pē, ʻi he poto kākā ʻoe tangata, mo e poto ʻi he fiemuʻa, ʻaia ʻoku nau toka tataʻo ai ke kākaaʻi;

So we shall no longer be babes nor shall we resemble mariners tossed on the waves and carried about with every changing wind of doctrine according to men's cleverness and unscrupulous cunning, making use of every shifting device to mislead.

15 Kae lea ʻaki ʻae moʻoni ʻi he ʻofa, pea tupu hake ʻiate ia, ʻaia ko Kalaisi ko e ʻulu, ʻi he meʻa kotoa pē:

But we shall lovingly hold to the truth, and shall in all respects grow up into union with Him who is our Head, even Christ.

16 ‌ʻAia ʻoku fakahokohoko ai ʻae sino kotoa, pea fakataha ʻi he meʻa ʻoku tokoni ʻaki ʻe he kupu kotoa pē, ʻo fakatatau ki hono faʻa fai ʻi he fua ʻoe potu kotoa pē, ʻoku tupulaki ai ʻae sino, pea langa hake ia ʻi he ʻofa.

Dependent on Him, the whole body--its various parts closely fitting and firmly adhering to one another-- grows by the aid of every contributory link, with power proportioned to the need of each individual part, so as to build itself up in a spirit of love.

17 Pea ko e meʻa ni, ʻoku ou tala mo fakapapau ʻi he ʻEiki, ke ʻoua te mou kei ʻaʻeva ʻo hangē ko e ʻaʻeva ʻae Senitaile kehe, ʻi he vale ʻo honau loto,

Therefore I warn you, and I implore you in the name of the Master, no longer to live as the Gentiles in their perverseness live,

18 Kuo fakapoʻuli honau loto, kuo fakamavaheʻi mei he moʻui fakaʻotua, ʻi he vale ʻoku ʻiate kinautolu, ko e meʻa ʻi he fefeka ʻo honau loto:

with darkened understandings, having by reason of the ignorance which is deep-seated in them and the insensibility of their moral nature, no share in the Life which God gives.

19 ‌ʻAkinautolu ʻoku taʻeongoʻi, kuo nau tukuange ʻakinautolu ki he anga fakalielia, ke fai ʻae meʻa ʻuli kotoa pē ʻi he fiefie fai.

Such men being past feeling have abandoned themselves to impurity, greedily indulging in every kind of profligacy.

20 Ka kuo ʻikai pehē hono akonekina ʻakimoutolu meia Kalaisi;

But these are not the lessons which you have learned from Christ;

21 He kuo fanongo ʻakimoutolu kiate ia, pea kuo akonekina ʻakimoutolu meiate ia, ʻo fakatatau ki he moʻoni ʻoku ʻia Sisu:

if at least you have heard His voice and in Him have been taught--and this is true Christian teaching--

22 Pea ko e meʻa ʻi he ʻulungāanga motuʻa, ke mou siʻaki ʻae tangata motuʻa, ʻaia ʻoku fakalielia, pea tatau mo e ngaahi holi kovi fakakākā;

to put away, in regard to your former mode of life, your original evil nature which is doomed to perish as befits its misleading impulses,

23 Pea ke fakafoʻou ʻakimoutolu ʻi he tefito ʻo homou loto;

and to get yourselves renewed in the temper of your minds and clothe yourselves

24 Pea ke ʻai ʻekimoutolu ʻae tangata foʻou, ʻaia ʻoku fakatupu ke tatau mo e ʻOtua ʻi he angatonu mo e māʻoniʻoni moʻoni.

with that new and better self which has been created to resemble God in the righteousness and holiness which come from the truth.

25 Ko ia ke liʻaki ʻae loi, kae taki taha lea ʻaki ʻae moʻoni ki hono kaungāʻapi: he ʻoku tau fekupuʻaki ʻakitautolu.

For this reason, laying aside falsehood, every one of you should speak the truth to his fellow man; for we are, as it were, parts of one another.

26 Ke mou ʻita, kae ʻalu hifo ʻae laʻā mo hoʻomou ʻita:

If angry, beware of sinning. Let not your irritation last until the sun goes down;

27 Pea ʻoua naʻa fakaʻataʻatā ki he tēvolo.

and do not leave room for the Devil.

28 Ko ia ia naʻe kaihaʻa, ke ʻoua ʻe toe kaihaʻa: ka ne ngāue muʻa, ʻo fai ʻaki hono nima ʻae meʻa ʻoku lelei, koeʻuhi ke ne maʻu ke foaki kiate ia ʻoku masiva.

He who has been a thief must steal no more, but, instead of that, should work with his own hands in honest industry, so that he may have something of which he can give the needy a share.

29 Ke ʻoua naʻa haʻu ha talanoa ʻuli mei homou ngutu, ka ko ia ʻoku lelei ʻo ʻaonga ke langaʻaki hake, koeʻuhi ke tupu ai ʻae tokoni ki he kau fanongo.

Let no unwholesome words ever pass your lips, but let all your words be good for benefiting others according to the need of the moment, so that they may be a means of blessing to the hearers.

30 Pea ʻoua naʻa fakamamahi ki he Laumālie Māʻoniʻoni ʻoe ʻOtua, ʻaia kuo silaʻi ʻaki ʻakimoutolu ki he ʻaho ʻoe huhuʻi.

And beware of grieving the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you have been sealed in preparation for the day of Redemption.

31 Tuku ke mamaʻo ʻiate kimoutolu ʻae loto kovi kotoa pē, mo e ʻita, mo e lili, mo e feʻiohoʻaki, mo e lea fakakovi, mo e fakafasifasi kotoa pē:

Let all bitterness and all passionate feeling, all anger and loud insulting language, be unknown among you--and also every kind of malice.

32 Kae feangaleleiʻaki ʻakimoutolu kiate kimoutolu, ʻo manavaʻofa, ʻo fefakamolemoleʻaki ʻakimoutolu, ʻo hangē ko e fakamolemolea ʻakimoutolu ʻe he ʻOtua koeʻuhi ko Kalaisi.

On the contrary learn to be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ has also forgiven you.
