Lukas 2
1 Det begaf sig i den tiden, att af Kejsar Augusto utgick ett bud, att all verlden skulle beskattas;
About that time an edict was issued by the Emperor Augustus that a census should be taken of the whole Empire.
2 Och denna beskattning var den första, och skedde under den höfdingen öfver Syrien, Cyrenio.
(This was the first census taken while Quirinius was Governor of Syria).
3 Och de gingo alle, hvar uti sin stad, till att låta beskatta sig.
And everyone went to his own town to be registered.
4 Så for ock Joseph upp af Galileen, af den staden Nazareth, in uti Judiska landet, till Davids stad, som heter BethLehem; ty han var af Davids hus och slägt;
Among others Joseph went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem, the town of David, in Judea – because he belonged to the family and house of David –
5 På det han skulle låta beskatta sig, med Maria, sin trolofvada hustru, hvilken hafvandes var.
to be registered with Mary, his engaged wife, who was about to become a mother.
6 Så begaf sig, medan de voro der, vordo dagarna fullbordade att hon skulle föda.
While they were there her time came,
7 Och hon födde sin förstfödda Son, och svepte honom i lindakläder, och lade honom neder i en krubbo; ty dem var icke rum i herbergena.
and she gave birth to her first child, a son. And because there was no room for them in the inn, she swathed him round and laid him in a manger.
8 Och i den samma ängden voro någre herdar, de der vakade, och höllo vård om nattena öfver sin hjord.
In that same countryside were shepherds out in the open fields, watching their flocks that night,
9 Och si, Herrans Ängel stod när dem, och Herrans klarhet kringsken dem; och de vordo storliga förfärade.
when an angel of the Lord suddenly stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were seized with fear.
10 Och sade Ängelen till dem: Varer icke förfärade; si, jag bådar eder stor glädje, hvilken allo folkena vederfaras skall;
‘Have no fear,’ the angel said. ‘For I bring you good news of a great joy in store for all the nation.
11 Ty i dag är eder födder Frälsaren, som är Christus Herren, i Davids stad.
This day there has been born to you, in the town of David, a Saviour, who is Christ and Lord.
12 Och detta skall vara eder för tecken: I skolen finna barnet svept i lindakläder, nederlagdt i en krubbo.
And this will be the sign for you. You will find the infant swathed, and lying in a manger.’
13 Och straxt vardt med Ängelen ett stort tal af den himmelska härskaran, de der lofvade Gud, och sade:
Then suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly Host, praising God, and singing –
14 Ära vare Gud i höjdene, och frid på jordene, och menniskomen en god vilje.
‘glory to God on high, and on earth peace among those in whom he finds pleasure.’
15 Och det begaf sig, att Änglarna foro ifrå dem upp i himmelen, och herdarna begynte säga emellan sig: Låter oss nu gå till BethLehem, och se det som vi hafve hört skedt vara, det Herren oss uppenbarat hafver.
Now, when the angels had left them and gone back to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go at once to Bethlehem, and see this thing that has happened, of which the Lord has told us.’
16 Och de gingo hasteliga, och funno Maria, och Joseph, och barnet nederlagdt i krubbon.
So they went quickly, and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in a manger;
17 Och då de det sett hade, beryktade de ut hvad dem sagdt var om detta barnet.
and, when they saw it, they told of all that had been said to them about this child.
18 Och alle, de det hörde, förundrade sig på de ting, som dem sagd voro af herdarna.
All who heard the shepherds were astonished at their story,
19 Men Maria gömde all dessa ord, betraktandes dem i sitt hjerta.
while Mary treasured in her heart all that they said, and thought about it often.
20 Och herdarna gingo tillbaka igen, prisade och lofvade Gud öfver allt det de hört och sett hade, såsom dem sagdt var.
And the shepherds went back, giving glory and praise to God for all that they had heard and seen. It had all happened as they had been told.
21 Och då åtta dagar voro framgångne, att barnet skulle omskäras, kallades hans Namn JESUS; hvilket så kalladt var af Ängelen, förr än han aflad vardt i moderlifvet.
Eight days after the birth of the child, when it was time to circumcise him, he received the name Jesus – the name given him by the angel before his conception.
22 Och då deras renselsedagar voro fullkomnade, efter Mose lag, hade de honom till Jerusalem, på det de skulle bära honom fram för Herran;
When the period of purification of mother and child, required by the Law of Moses, came to an end, his parents took the child up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord,
23 Såsom skrifvet är i Herrans lag: Allt mankön, som först öppnar moderlifvet, skall kallas heligt Herranom;
in compliance with the Law of the Lord that every firstborn male will be dedicated to the Lord,
24 Och på det de skulle offra, såsom sagdt var i Herrans lag, ett par turturdufvor, eller två unga dufvor.
and also to offer the sacrifice required by the Law of the Lord – a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons.
25 Och si, i Jerusalem var en man, benämnd Simeon, och den mannen var rättfärdig och gudfruktig, och vänte efter Israels tröst; och den Helge Ande var med honom.
There was at that time in Jerusalem a man named Simeon, a righteous and devout man, who lived in constant expectation of Israel’s consulation, and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
26 Och han hade fått svar af den Helga Anda, att han icke skulle se döden, utan han hade sett tillförene Herrans Christ.
It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not die until he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
27 Och han kom af Andans tillskyndelse i templet. Och föräldrarna båro in barnet Jesum, att de skulle göra för honom, såsom sedvänja var i lagen.
Moved by the Spirit, Simeon came into the Temple Courts, and, when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the Law,
28 Då tog han honom i sin famn, och lofvade Gud, och sade:
Simeon himself took the child in his arms, and blessed God, and said:
29 Herre, nu låter du din tjenare fara i frid, efter som du sagt hafver;
‘Now, Lord, you will let your servant go, according to your word, in peace,
30 Ty min ögon hafva sett dina salighet;
for my eyes have seen the salvation
31 Hvilka du beredt hafver för allo folke;
which you have prepared in the sight of all nations –
32 Ett Ljus till Hedningarnas upplysning, och ditt folk Israel till pris.
a light to bring light to the Gentiles, and to be the glory of your people Israel.’
33 Och Joseph och hans moder förundrade sig på det, som sades om honom.
While the child’s father and mother were wondering at what was said about him,
34 Och Simeon välsignade dem, och sade till Maria, hans moder: Si, denne är satt till ett fall och uppståndelse mångom i Israel, och till ett tecken, hvilko emot sagdt varder.
Simeon gave them his blessing, and said to Mary, the child’s mother, ‘This child is appointed to be the cause of the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign much spoken against –
35 Ja, ett svärd skall ock gå igenom dina själ, på det mång hjertans tankar skola uppenbaras.
Yes, the sword will pierce your own heart – and so the thoughts in many minds will be disclosed.’
36 Och der var en Prophetissa, benämnd Hanna, Phanuels dotter, af Assurs slägte; hon var kommen till en stor ålder, och hade lefvat i sju år med sin man, ifrå sin jungfrudom;
There was also a prophet named Hannah, a daughter of Phanuel and of the tribe of Asher. She was far advanced in years, having lived with her husband for seven years after marriage,
37 Och var nu en enka, vid fyra och åttatio år; hon kom aldrig bort utu templet, tjenandes Gudi, med fasto och böner, natt och dag.
and then a widow, until she had reached the age of eighty-four. She never left the Temple Courts, but, fasting and praying, worshiped God night and day.
38 Hon kom ock dertill i samma stundene, och prisade Herran; och talade om honom till alla dem, som i Jerusalem vänte förlossning.
At that moment she came up, and began publicly to thank God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the deliverance of Jerusalem.
39 Och då de all ting fullbordat hade efter Herrans lag, drogo de in i Galileen igen, uti sin stad Nazareth.
When the child’s parents had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.
40 Men barnet växte upp, och förstärktes i Andanom, och uppfylldes med vishet; och Guds nåd var med honom.
The child grew and became strong and wise, and the blessing of God was on him.
41 Och hans föräldrar gingo årliga till Jerusalem, till Påskahögtiden.
Every year the child’s parents used to go to Jerusalem at the Passover Festival.
42 Och då han vardt tolf åra gammal, och de uppfarne voro till Jerusalem, efter högtidenes sedvänjo;
When Jesus was twelve years old, they went according to custom to Jerusalem,
43 Och de fullkomnat hade dagarna, och gingo hem igen, blef pilten Jesus qvar i Jerusalem, och Joseph och hans moder visste der intet af.
and had finished their visit; but, when they started to return, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, without their knowing it.
44 Men de mente, att han var i sällskapet, och de gingo ena dagsled, och sökte honom ibland fränder och vänner.
Thinking that he was with their fellow travellers, they went one day’s journey before searching for him among their relatives and acquaintances;
45 Och då de icke funno honom, gingo de till Jerusalem igen, och sökte honom.
and then, as they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching everywhere for him.
46 Så begaf det sig, efter tre dagar funno de honom i templet, sittandes midt ibland de lärare, hörandes dem, och frågandes dem;
It was not until the third day that they found him in the Temple Courts, sitting among the teachers, now listening to them, now asking them questions.
47 Och alle, de honom hörde, förskräckte sig öfver hans förstånd och svar.
All who listened to him marvelled at his intelligence and his answers.
48 Och då de sågo honom, förundrade de sig; och hans moder sade till honom: Min Son, hvi gjorde du oss detta? Si, din fader och jag hafve sökt efter dig sörjande.
His parents were amazed when they saw him, and his mother said to him, ‘My child, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.’
49 Och han sade till dem: Hvad är det, att I sökten mig? Vissten I icke, att uti de stycker, som min Fader tillhöra, bör mig vara?
‘What made you search for me?’ he answered. ‘Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?’
50 Och de förstodo icke ordet, som han med dem talade.
His parents did not understand what he meant.
51 Och så for han ned med dem, och kom till Nazareth, och var dem underdånig; men hans moder gömde all dessa ord uti sitt hjerta.
However he went down with them to Nazareth, and submitted himself to their control; and his mother treasured all that was said in her heart.
52 Och Jesus växte till i visdom, ålder och nåde, för Gud och menniskor.
And Jesus grew in wisdom as he grew in years, and gained the blessing of God and people.
