mathiḥ 15
1 aparaṁ yirūśālamnagarīyāḥ katipayā adhyāpakāḥ phirūśinaśca yīśoḥ samīpamāgatya kathayāmāsuḥ,
Then the Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying,
2 tava śiṣyāḥ kimartham aprakṣālitakarai rbhakṣitvā paramparāgataṁ prācīnānāṁ vyavahāraṁ laṅvante?
"Why do your disciples disobey the Tradition of the Elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread."
3 tato yīśuḥ pratyuvāca, yūyaṁ paramparāgatācāreṇa kuta īśvarājñāṁ laṅvadhve|
And he answered them, "Why do you also disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?
4 īśvara ityājñāpayat, tvaṁ nijapitarau saṁmanyethāḥ, yena ca nijapitarau nindyete, sa niścitaṁ mriyeta;
For God said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.'
5 kintu yūyaṁ vadatha, yaḥ svajanakaṁ svajananīṁ vā vākyamidaṁ vadati, yuvāṁ matto yallabhethe, tat nyavidyata,
But you say, 'Whoever may tell his father or his mother, "Whatever help you might otherwise have gotten from me is a gift devoted to God,"
6 sa nijapitarau puna rna saṁmaṁsyate| itthaṁ yūyaṁ paramparāgatena sveṣāmācāreṇeśvarīyājñāṁ lumpatha|
he is not to honor his father or his mother.' You have made the word of God void because of your tradition.
7 re kapaṭinaḥ sarvve yiśayiyo yuṣmānadhi bhaviṣyadvacanānyetāni samyag uktavān|
You hypocrites. Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,
8 vadanai rmanujā ete samāyānti madantikaṁ| tathādharai rmadīyañca mānaṁ kurvvanti te narāḥ|
'These people honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
9 kintu teṣāṁ mano matto vidūraeva tiṣṭhati| śikṣayanto vidhīn nrājñā bhajante māṁ mudhaiva te|
And in vain do they worship me, teaching instructions that are the commandments of humans.'"
10 tato yīśu rlokān āhūya proktavān, yūyaṁ śrutvā budhyadhbaṁ|
He summoned the crowd, and said to them, "Hear, and understand.
11 yanmukhaṁ praviśati, tat manujam amedhyaṁ na karoti, kintu yadāsyāt nirgacchati, tadeva mānuṣamamedhyī karotī|
That which enters into the mouth does not defile the person; but that which proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the person."
12 tadānīṁ śiṣyā āgatya tasmai kathayāñcakruḥ, etāṁ kathāṁ śrutvā phirūśino vyarajyanta, tat kiṁ bhavatā jñāyate?
Then the disciples came, and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended, when they heard this saying?"
13 sa pratyavadat, mama svargasthaḥ pitā yaṁ kañcidaṅkuraṁ nāropayat, sa utpāvdyate|
But he answered, "Every plant which my heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted.
14 te tiṣṭhantu, te andhamanujānām andhamārgadarśakā eva; yadyandho'ndhaṁ panthānaṁ darśayati, tarhyubhau gartte patataḥ|
Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit."
15 tadā pitarastaṁ pratyavadat, dṛṣṭāntamimamasmān bodhayatu|
And answering, Peter said to him, "Explain this parable to us."
16 yīśunā proktaṁ, yūyamadya yāvat kimabodhāḥ stha?
So he said, "Do you also still not understand?
17 kathāmimāṁ kiṁ na budhyadhbe? yadāsyaṁ previśati, tad udare patan bahirniryāti,
Do you not understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the belly, and then out of the body?
18 kintvāsyād yanniryāti, tad antaḥkaraṇāt niryātatvāt manujamamedhyaṁ karoti|
But the things which proceed out of the mouth come out of the heart, and they defile the person.
19 yato'ntaḥkaraṇāt kucintā badhaḥ pāradārikatā veśyāgamanaṁ cairyyaṁ mithyāsākṣyam īśvaranindā caitāni sarvvāṇi niryyānti|
For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies.
20 etāni manuṣyamapavitrī kurvvanti kintvaprakṣālitakareṇa bhojanaṁ manujamamedhyaṁ na karoti|
These are the things which defile the person; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the person."
21 anantaraṁ yīśustasmāt sthānāt prasthāya sorasīdonnagarayoḥ sīmāmupatasyau|
Jesus went out from there, and withdrew into the region of Tyre and Sidon.
22 tadā tatsīmātaḥ kācit kinānīyā yoṣid āgatya tamuccairuvāca, he prabho dāyūdaḥ santāna, mamaikā duhitāste sā bhūtagrastā satī mahākleśaṁ prāpnoti mama dayasva|
And look, a Canaanite woman came out from those borders, and started shouting, saying, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David. My daughter is severely demonized."
23 kintu yīśustāṁ kimapi noktavān, tataḥ śiṣyā āgatya taṁ nivedayāmāsuḥ, eṣā yoṣid asmākaṁ paścād uccairāhūyāgacchati, enāṁ visṛjatu|
But he did not answer her a word. His disciples came and pleaded with him, saying, "Send her away, for she keeps shouting at us."
24 tadā sa pratyavadat, isrāyelgotrasya hāritameṣān vinā kasyāpyanyasya samīpaṁ nāhaṁ preṣitosmi|
But he answered, "I was not sent to anyone but the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
25 tataḥ sā nārīsamāgatya taṁ praṇamya jagāda, he prabho māmupakuru|
But she came and worshiped him, saying, "Lord, help me."
26 sa uktavān, bālakānāṁ bhakṣyamādāya sārameyebhyo dānaṁ nocitaṁ|
But he answered, "It is not appropriate to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."
27 tadā sā babhāṣe, he prabho, tat satyaṁ, tathāpi prabho rbhañcād yaducchiṣṭaṁ patati, tat sārameyāḥ khādanti|
But she said, "Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters' table."
28 tato yīśuḥ pratyavadat, he yoṣit, tava viśvāso mahān tasmāt tava manobhilaṣitaṁ sidyyatu, tena tasyāḥ kanyā tasminneva daṇḍe nirāmayābhavat|
Then Jesus answered her, "Woman, great is your faith. Be it done to you even as you desire." And her daughter was healed from that hour.
29 anantaraṁ yīśastasmāt sthānāt prasthāya gālīlsāgarasya sannidhimāgatya dharādharamāruhya tatropaviveśa|
Jesus departed there, and came near to the sea of Galilee; and he went up into the mountain, and sat there.
30 paścāt jananivaho bahūn khañcāndhamūkaśuṣkakaramānuṣān ādāya yīśoḥ samīpamāgatya taccaraṇāntike sthāpayāmāsuḥ, tataḥ sā tān nirāmayān akarot|
Large crowds came to him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, crippled, and many others, and they put them down at his feet; and he healed them.
31 itthaṁ mūkā vākyaṁ vadanti, śuṣkakarāḥ svāsthyamāyānti, paṅgavo gacchanti, andhā vīkṣante, iti vilokya lokā vismayaṁ manyamānā isrāyela īśvaraṁ dhanyaṁ babhāṣire|
So the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, crippled healthy, lame walking, and blind seeing—and they glorified the God of Israel.
32 tadānīṁ yīśuḥ svaśiṣyān āhūya gaditavān, etajjananivaheṣu mama dayā jāyate, ete dinatrayaṁ mayā sākaṁ santi, eṣāṁ bhakṣyavastu ca kañcidapi nāsti, tasmādahametānakṛtāhārān na visrakṣyāmi, tathātve vartmamadhye klāmyeṣuḥ|
Jesus summoned the disciples and said, "I have compassion on the crowd, because they continue with me now three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away fasting, or they might faint on the way."
33 tadā śiṣyā ūcuḥ, etasmin prāntaramadhya etāvato martyān tarpayituṁ vayaṁ kutra pūpān prāpsyāmaḥ?
Then the disciples said to him, "Where should we get so many loaves in a deserted place as to satisfy so great a crowd?"
34 yīśurapṛcchat, yuṣmākaṁ nikaṭe kati pūpā āsate? ta ūcuḥ, saptapūpā alpāḥ kṣudramīnāśca santi|
Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" They said, "Seven, and a few small fish."
35 tadānīṁ sa lokanivahaṁ bhūmāvupaveṣṭum ādiśya
He commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground;
36 tān saptapūpān mīnāṁśca gṛhlan īśvarīyaguṇān anūdya bhaṁktvā śiṣyebhyo dadau, śiṣyā lokebhyo daduḥ|
and he took the seven loaves and the fish. He gave thanks and broke them, and gave to the disciples, and the disciples to the crowds.
37 tataḥ sarvve bhuktvā tṛptavantaḥ; tadavaśiṣṭabhakṣyeṇa saptaḍalakān paripūryya saṁjagṛhuḥ|
They all ate, and were filled. They took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces that were left over.
38 te bhoktāro yoṣito bālakāṁśca vihāya prāyeṇa catuḥsahasrāṇi puruṣā āsan|
Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.
39 tataḥ paraṁ sa jananivahaṁ visṛjya tarimāruhya magdalāpradeśaṁ gatavān|
Then he sent away the crowds, got into the boat, and came into the borders of Magadan.
