Gálatas 2

1 Decorridos catorze anos, voltei a Jerusalém com Barnabé. Também levei o Tito.

After 14 years passed, I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas. I took Titus also.

2 Mas eu lhes digo que fui lá por causa daquilo que Deus me tinha revelado. [Não foi por alguém ter-me convidado]. Expliquei particularmente àqueles que seus novos mestres repitam altamente qual era a boa mensagem que eu estava pregando nas regiões onde moram os não judeus. Procedi assim para que aquilo que eu fazia, e que tinha feito [MET], não fosse inútil [MET] [como consequência de as pessoas rejeitarem minha mensagem por achar que eu ensinava algo que não fosse verdade].

But [I tell you that] I went up there because of what God revealed to me. [It was not because someone there asked me to come]. I told people what was the good message that I was preaching in regions where non-Jews live. But I talked privately to those whom your new teachers highly respect. I did that in order that what I was doing and what I had done [MET] might not become useless [MET] [as a result of people rejecting my message because they thought that I was teaching something that was not true].

3 Mas [mesmo que os líderes dos crentes geralmente fizessem questão, quando os não judeus confiavam em Cristo, que alguém os circuncidasse], Tito não foi obrigado a ser circuncidado {eles não insistiram em que alguém circuncidasse o Tito}, embora ele, que me acompanhava, fosse grego.

But [even though the leaders of the believers usually insisted that when non-Jews trusted in Christ someone must circumcise them], they did not even insist that Titus be circumcised, even though he was a Greek man who was with me.

4 [Eu falei com eles particularmente ]porque algumas pessoas faziam de conta, e [com êxito], que eram irmãos crentes e se associavam com os verdadeiros crentes. Eles assim procederam para que pudessem observar de perto aquilo que fazemos por sermos livres da obrigação [de obedecer às leis que Deus deu a Moisés ]por causa da nossa intimidade com Cristo Jesus [MET]. Eles queriam tornar-nos [como ]escravos [MET] [daquela lei, convencendo-nos de que não poderíamos confiar exclusivamente em Cristo, mas que éramos obrigados a obedecer às leis que Deus deu a Moisés].

[I talked to them privately] because some people [successfully] pretended that they were fellow believers and associated with the true believers. They did that in order that they might observe closely what we do because we are free [from having to obey all the Jewish laws and rituals] because of our close relationship with Christ Jesus [MET]. Those people wanted to make us [like] slaves [MET] [of those rituals by convincing us that we cannot trust Christ solely but that we must also obey all the Jewish rituals].

5 Mas nem por um minuto fizemos (excl) aquilo que eles desejavam com relação [à circuncisão. Nós (excl) os resistimos ]para que a verdade da mensagem sobre Cristo pudesse continuar [beneficiando ]vocês.

But not even briefly did we [(exc)] do what they wanted [about circumcision. We(exc) resisted them] in order that the truth of the message about Christ might continue to [benefit] you.

6 Os [líderes de Jerusalém ]que seus novos mestres respeitam não acrescentaram nada àquilo que prego. [E desejo frisar que ]a importância ou alta categoria que aqueles líderes pudessem ter não me influenciou, pois Deus não favorece certas pessoas/pessoas influentes [IDM] mais que outras.

The [leaders in Jerusalem], whom your new teachers respect, did not add anything to what I preach. [And I would add that] what status those leaders had did not influence me, because God does not favor certain/important persons [IDM] more than others.

7 Não, aqueles líderes não acrescentaram nada à mensagem que digo às pessoas. Pelo contrário, eles entenderam que me foi dada a boa mensagem {que Deus me deu a boa mensagem} para que eu pudesse proclamá-la aos não judeus [MTY], bem como Deus deu a boa mensagem a Pedro para que ele pudesse divulgá-la aos judeus [MTY].

Instead of those leaders adding to the message that I tell people, they understood that I had been given the good message {God had given the good message to me} so that I might proclaim it to the non-Jews [MTY], just like [God] had given the good message to Peter so that he might tell it to those who are Jews [MTY].

8 Ou seja, bem como Deus capacitou/autorizou Pedro a ser um apóstolo que leva sua mensagem aos judeus [MTY], assim também ele me capacitou/autorizou a ser um apóstolo que [leva a mensagem dele ]aos não judeus.

That is, just like [God] had empowered/authorized Peter in order that he might be an apostle [to bring God’s message] to the Jews [MTY], he also had empowered/authorized me in order that I might be an apostle to [bring his message to] the non-Jews.

9 E [aqueles líderes ]sabiam que me fora dada {que Deus me tinha dado} bondosamente esta tarefa especial. Portanto, Tiago, Pedro e João, aqueles a quem seus novos mestres [respeitam por serem ]líderes [MET] [dos crentes], deram-nos a mão [IDM] [para mostrar que concordavam que Barnabé e eu estávamos servindo ao Senhor exatamente como eles, e que estávamos pregando a mesma mensagem]. Eles também concordaram que éramos nós (excl) que Deus mandou para [comunicar a mensagem dele ]aos não judeus [MTY].

And [those leaders] knew that God had kindly given to me this special work. So James, Peter, and John, the ones whom your new teachers [respect because they are] leaders [MET] [of the believers], shook hands with us [IDM] [to show that they agreed that Barnabas and I are serving the Lord just like they are, and that we are preaching the same message that they are preaching]. They also agreed that we [(exc)] are the ones whom God was sending to [tell his message to] non-Jews, but that God is sending them to [tell his message to] Jews [MTY].

10 Eles somente fizeram questão que nós (excl) nos lembrássemos de ajudar [os irmãos crentes mais pobres que moram em Jerusalém]. Era precisamente isso que eu almejava fazer.

They merely urged that we [(exc)] still remember to help the poor [fellow believers who live in Jerusalem]. That is exactly what I have been eager to do.

11 Mas [posteriormente, enquanto eu estava na cidade de ]Antioquia e quando Pedro lá chegou, eu lhe disse diretamente [SYN] que aquilo que ele fazia estava errado.

But [later while I was at] Antioch [city], after Peter came there, I told him directly [SYN] that what he was doing was wrong.

12 [Aconteceu o seguinte]: Havia certos [crentes judaicos associados ]ao Tiago. Antes de eles virem [a Antioquia], Pedro e os crentes não judaicos costumavam tomar juntos as refeições. Mas quando [aqueles certos homens ]chegaram, Pedro deixou aos poucos de [jantar ]com os crentes não judaicos e não quis associar-se mais a eles. Ele tinha medo de que [os crentes judaicos de Jerusalém os criticassem por ter-se associado aos não judeus].

[This is what happened]: [Peter went to Antioch and started eating regularly with non-Jewish believers there]. Later there were certain [Jewish believers who] came [to Antioch who claimed that] James, [the leader of the congregations in Jerusalem], had sent them. But when [those certain] men came, Peter gradually quit [eating] with the non-Jewish believers and would not associate with them. He was afraid that the Jewish [believers from Jerusalem would criticize him for associating with non-Jews].

13 Outrossim, os demais [crentes judaicos na Antioquia ][SYN] agiam com insinceridade em companhia de [Pedro]. O resultado foi que eles conseguiram convencer até o Barnabé a [deixar de associar-se aos crentes não judaicos]!

Also, the other Jewish [believers who were in Antioch] [SYN] acted (insincerely/in a way that they knew was not right) along with [Peter]. The result was that they convinced even Barnabas to [stop associating with the non-Jewish believers]!

14 Mas quando me dei conta de que eles não agiam conforme a verdade da mensagem sobre Cristo, [quando ]estavam ali presentes todos [os demais irmãos crentes], eu disse [o seguinte ]a Pedro: “Embora você seja judeu, [comporta-se com frequência ]como os não judeus, [negligenciando as leis judaicas sobre a comida. Quando você se encontra entre não judeus], não costuma comportar-se de jeito nenhum como os judeus. Portanto, —agora está errado/por que é que— [RHQ] você estar/você está fazendo com que os não judeus [achem que devem obedecer a todos ]os rituais e costumes judaicos!/?”

But when I realized that they were not acting according to the truth of the message about Christ, [when] all [the fellow believers there] were present, I told Peter [the following]: “Although you [(sg)] are a Jew, [you often conduct yourself] like non-Jews [do by disregarding Jewish laws about food. When you are among non-Jews], you [(sg)] do not customarily conduct yourself at all like Jews [do]. So, (now it is wrong that you [(sg)] are causing non-Jews [to think that they must obey all] the Jewish rituals and customs!/why are you [(sg)] causing non-Jews [to think that they must obey all] the Jewish rituals and customs?) [RHQ]”

15 Alguns de nós [crentes ]nascemos judeus. Nós (excl) não nascemos não judeus. [Nós judeus sempre consideramos os não judeus ]‘pecadores’, [pois não obedecem às leis cerimoniais mosaicas/judaicas].

Some of us [believers] were born as Jews. We [(exc)] were not born as non-Jews. [We Jews have always considered non-Jews to be] ‘sinners’ [because they do not obey the Jewish rituals and laws].

16 Mas nós (excl) descobrimos que não é por alguma pessoa obedecer às leis que [Deus deu a Moisés ]que é apagado o registro dos seus pecados {que Deus apaga o registro dos pecados daquela pessoa}. [Deus apaga o registro dos pecados de um indivíduo somente se aquele indivíduo confia naquilo que Jesus Cristo tem feito]. Até nós (excl) judeus confiamos [decisivamente ]em Cristo Jesus. Nós (excl) assim fizemos para que o registro de nossos pecados fosse apagado {que Deus apagasse o registro de nossos pecados} por termos confiado em Cristo, e não por termos obedecido às leis que [Deus deu a Moisés. Deus disse que ]nunca apagará o registro dos pecados de alguém só por este ter obedecido àquelas leis.

But we [(exc)] now know that it is not because some person obeys the laws [that God gave to Moses] that [God] erases the record of that person’s sins. [God erases the record of a person’s sins only if that person trusts in what Jesus Christ has done]. Even we [(exc)] Jews trusted Christ Jesus. We [(exc)] did that in order that [God] would erase the record of our sins because of our trusting Christ, and not because of our obeying the laws [that God gave to Moses. God has said that] he will [never] erase the record of people’s sins just because of their obeying those laws.

17 Além disso, já que nós (excl) [judeus ]desejávamos que o registro de nossos pecados fosse apagado {que Deus apagasse o registro de nossos pecados} por causa de nossa intimidade com Cristo, [significa que ]nós nos demos conta de sermos pecadores [como os não judeus que chamamos de ]pecadores, [pois nós (excl) tampouco obedecíamos à lei cerimonial mosaica/judaica. Mas nós (inc) com certeza não podemos/devemos— concluir ][RHQ] que é Cristo quem nos faz pecar. Não, [RHQ] com certeza Cristo não [faz ninguém pecar].

Furthermore, because we [(exc) Jews] desired that [God] would erase the record of our sins because of our relationship with Christ, [it means that] we realized that we ourselves were sinners [like non-Jews, whom we called] sinners, [because we(exc) also were not obeying the Jewish rituals and laws]. [But] ([we(inc) certainly cannot conclude] that it is Christ who causes us to sin./[should we conclude] that it is Christ who causes us to sin?) [RHQ] [No, Christ] certainly does not [cause anyone to sin].

18 Portanto, se eu fosse crer novamente [que Deus apagaria o registro dos meus pecados por eu ter obedecido às leis que Ele deu a Moisés ][MET], [então eu seria como um homem que ]reconstrói um velho prédio que já demoliu. [Logo ]ficaria claro que sou eu que desobedeço àquelas mesmas leis [que Deus deu a Moisés].

So if I should again believe [that God would erase the record of my sins because of my obeying the laws that he gave to Moses] [MET], [I would be like a man who] rebuilds an old building that he tore down. It would [soon] be clear that I am one who disobeys those same laws [that God gave to Moses].

19 Quando [me dei conta de que não poderia ganhar o favor de Deus ]por [minha obediência ]às leis [que ele deu a Moisés, resolvi não responder àquilo que essas leis exigiam ][MET], [bem como ]um morto [não responde a nada]. Agora vivo para [honrar/servir ]a Deus; [é como ]se eu estivesse com Cristo quando ele foi crucificado {morreu na cruz} [MET] (OU, [É como se ]minha [antiga ]forma [de vida tivesse terminado quando ]Cristo morreu na cruz.)

When [I realized that I could not earn God’s favor] by [obeying] the laws [that he gave to Moses, I decided not] to [respond to what those laws demanded] [MET], [just like] a dead person [does not respond to anything]. Now I live to [honor/serve] God.

20 Já não determino a forma [em que eu me comporto, como fazia antes de crer em Cristo]. Agora Cristo [determina como me comporto. E tudo que eu faço ]agora, enquanto vivo, faço confiando no Filho de Deus. É ele quem me amou e se ofereceu [como sacrifício ]por mim.

[It is as though] I was with Christ when he was crucified {died on the cross} [MET] (OR, [It is as though] my [old way of life ended when] Christ died on the cross.) No longer am I [directing the way I behave as I did before I believed in Christ]. Now Christ [is directing how] I [behave. And whatever I do] now while I live, I do it trusting in God’s Son. He is the one who loved me and offered himself [as a sacrifice] for me.

21 Não rejeito [como inútil ]o que Deus [fez por mim]—bondosamente/que eu nem merecia—, [como fazem meus opositores. Aceito plenamente que Deus me salvou, agindo bondosamente para comigo. ]Se for por alguém [obedecer às ]leis que [Deus deu a Moisés ]que Deus apaga o registro dos pecados dele, então Cristo morreu em vão.

I am not rejecting [as useless] what God [did for me] ([kindly/that I did not deserve]), [as my opponents are doing. I fully accept that God saved me by acting kindly towards me]. If it is because people [obey the] laws [that God gave to Moses] that God erases the record of their sins, then Christ died (for nothing/needlessly).
