1 Et ingressus perambulabat Iericho.
Then Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.
2 Et ecce vir nomine Zachaeus: et hic princeps erat publicanorum, et ipse dives:
And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector, who was rich.
3 et quaerebat videre Iesum, quis esset: et non poterat prae turba, quia statura pusillus erat.
He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he could not do so because of the crowd, for he was small in stature.
4 Et praecurrens ascendit in arborem sycomorum ut videret eum: quia inde erat transiturus.
So he ran on ahead and climbed a sycamore tree so that he could see him, because Jesus was about to pass by that way.
5 Et cum venisset ad locum, suspiciens Iesus vidit illum, et dixit ad eum: Zachaee festinans descende: quia hodie in domo tua oportet me manere.
When Jesus came to that place, he looked up and saw him. Then he said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at yoʋr house today.”
6 Et festinans descendit, et excepit illum gaudens.
So he hurried down and received Jesus with joy.
7 Et cum viderent omnes, murmurabant, dicentes quod ad hominem peccatorem divertisset.
When all the people saw it, they grumbled, saying, “He has gone in to stay with a sinful man.”
8 Stans autem Zachaeus, dixit ad Iesum: Ecce dimidium bonorum meorum, Domine, do pauperibus: et si quid aliquem defraudavi, reddo quadruplum.
But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my goods, Lord, I give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone, I will pay back four times the amount.”
9 Ait Iesus ad eum: Quia hodie salus domui huic facta est: eo quod et ipse filius sit Abrahae.
Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, for this man also is a son of Abraham.
10 Venit enim Filius hominis quaerere, et salvum facere quod perierat.
For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.”
11 Haec illis audientibus adiiciens, dixit parabolam, eo quod esset prope Ierusalem: et quia existimarent quod confestim regnum Dei manifestaretur.
Now as the people were listening to this, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because he was near Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once.
12 Dixit ergo: Homo quidam nobilis abiit in regionem longinquam accipere sibi regnum, et reverti.
So he said, “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself and then return.
13 Vocatis autem decem servis suis, dedit eis decem mnas, et ait ad illos: Negotiamini dum venio.
Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’
14 Cives autem eius oderant eum: et miserunt legationem post illum, dicentes: Nolumus hunc regnare super nos.
Now his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’
15 Et factum est ut rediret accepto regno: et iussit vocari servos, quibus dedit pecuniam, ut sciret quantum quisque negotiatus esset.
When he returned after receiving the kingdom, he summoned the servants to whom he had given the money, so that he might know who had gained what by engaging in business.
16 Venit autem primus dicens: Domine, mna tua decem mnas acquisivit.
The first came before him and said, ‘Master, yoʋr mina has made ten minas more.’
17 Et ait illi: Euge bone serve, quia in modico fuisti fidelis, eris potestatem habens super decem civitates.
The king said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because yoʋ have been faithful in a very small matter, take authority over ten cities.’
18 Et alter venit, dicens: Domine, mna tua fecit quinque mnas.
The second came and said, ‘Master, yoʋr mina has made five minas.’
19 Et huic ait: Et tu esto super quinque civitates.
The king said to him, ‘Yoʋ are to be over five cities.’
20 Et alter venit, dicens: Domine, ecce mna tua, quam habui repositam in sudario:
Another came and said, ‘Master, behold, here is yoʋr mina, which I kept put away in a piece of cloth.
21 timui enim te, quia homo austerus es: tollis quod non posuisti, et metis quod non seminasti.
For I was afraid of yoʋ, because yoʋ are a stern man. Yoʋ take out what yoʋ did not put in, and yoʋ reap what yoʋ did not sow.’
22 Dicit ei: De ore tuo te iudico serve nequam. sciebas quod ego homo austerus sum, tollens quod non posui, et metens quod non seminavi:
The king said to him, ‘I will condemn yoʋ by the words coming out of yoʋr own mouth, yoʋ evil servant. Yoʋ knew, did yoʋ, that I was a stern man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?
23 quare non dedisti pecuniam meam ad mensam, ut ego veniens cum usuris utique exegissem illam?
Why then did yoʋ not deposit my money in the bank, and when I came I would have collected it with interest?’
24 Et astantibus, dixit: Auferte ab illo mnam, et date illi, qui decem mnas habet.
Then he said to those standing nearby, ‘Take the mina from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’
25 Et dixerunt ei: Domine, habet decem mnas.
(But they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas!’)
26 Dico autem vobis, quia omni habenti dabitur, et abundabit: ab eo autem, qui non habet, et quod habet auferetur ab eo.
‘For I tell you that everyone who has will be given more, but the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
27 Verumtamen inimicos meos illos, qui noluerunt me regnare super se, adducite huc: et interficite ante me.
But as for those enemies of mine who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them in front of me.’”
28 Et his dictis, praecedebat ascendens Ierosolymam.
After saying these things, Jesus continued on his way up to Jerusalem, walking ahead of his disciples.
29 Et factum est, cum appropinquasset ad Bethphage, et Bethaniam ad montem, qui vocatur Oliveti, misit duos discipulos suos,
As he drew near to Bethsphage and Bethany, at the mount called Olivet, he sent two of his disciples ahead,
30 dicens: Ite in castellum, quod contra vos est: in quod introeuntes, invenietis pullum asinae alligatum, cui nemo umquam hominum sedit: solvite illum, et adducite.
saying, “Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here.
31 Et si quis vos interrogaverit: Quare solvitis? sic dicetis ei: Quia Dominus operam eius desiderat.
If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ tell him this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’”
32 Abierunt autem qui missi erant: et invenerunt, sicut dixit illis, stantem pullum.
So those who were sent went off and found it just as he had told them.
33 Solventibus autem illis pullum, dixerunt domini eius ad illos: Quid solvitis pullum?
As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
34 At illi dixerunt: Quia Dominus eum necessarium habet.
They said, “The Lord has need of it.”
35 Et duxerunt illum ad Iesum. Et iacentes vestimenta sua supra pullum, imposuerunt Iesum.
Then they brought the colt to Jesus, threw their garments over it, and set Jesus on it.
36 Eunte autem illo, substernebant vestimenta sua in via.
As he went along, people were spreading their garments on the road.
37 Et cum appropinquaret iam ad descensum Montis oliveti, coeperunt omnes turbae descendentium gaudentes laudare Deum voce magna super omnibus, quas viderant, virtutibus,
And as he drew near to the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen,
38 dicentes: Benedictus, qui venit rex in nomine Domini, pax in caelo, et gloria in excelsis.
saying, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest!”
39 Et quidam Pharisaeorum de turbis, dixerunt ad illum: Magister, increpa discipulos tuos.
But some of the Pharisees from among the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke yoʋr disciples.”
40 Quibus ipse ait: Dico vobis, quia si hi tacuerint, lapides clamabunt.
In response he said to them, “I tell you, if they keep silent, the stones will cry out.”
41 Et ut appropinquavit, videns civitatem flevit super illam, dicens:
As he drew near to Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it,
42 Quia si cognovisses et tu, et quidem in hac die tua, quae ad pacem tibi, nunc autem abscondita sunt ab oculis tuis.
saying, “If only yoʋ had known, especially on this yoʋr day, what would bring about yoʋr peace! But now it is hidden from yoʋr eyes.
43 Quia venient dies in te: et circumdabunt te inimici tui vallo, et circumdabunt te: et coangustabunt te undique:
For the days will come upon yoʋ when yoʋr enemies build a barricade around yoʋ and encircle yoʋ, hemming yoʋ in on every side.
44 et ad terram prosternent te, et filios tuos, qui in te sunt, et non relinquent in te lapidem super lapidem: eo quod non cognoveris tempus visitationis tuae.
They will raze yoʋ to the ground, and yoʋr children within yoʋ. They will not leave in yoʋ one stone upon another, because yoʋ did not recognize the time of yoʋr visitation.”
45 Et ingressus in templum, coepit eiicere vendentes in illo, et ementes,
Then Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were selling and buying there.
46 dicens illis: Scriptum est: Quia domus mea domus orationis est. Vos autem fecistis illam speluncam latronum.
He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.”
47 Et erat docens quotidie in templo. Principes autem sacerdotum, et Scribae, et Princeps plebis quaerebant illum perdere:
Every day Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, but the chief priests and the scribes were seeking to destroy him, and so were the prominent leaders among the people.
48 et non inveniebant quid facerent illi. Omnis enim populus suspensus erat, audiens illum.
But they could not figure out what to do, for all the people were hanging on his every word as they listened to him.
