1 Quicumque sunt sub iugo servi, dominos suos omni honore dignos arbitrentur, ne nomen Domini et doctrina blasphemetur.
All who are under the yoke of slavery must regard their own masters as worthy of all honor, so that no one will revile God's name or his doctrine.
2 Qui autem fideles habent dominos, non contemnant, quia fratres sunt: sed magis serviant, quia fideles sunt et dilecti, qui beneficii participes sunt. Haec doce, et exhortare.
Slaves who have believing masters must not despise them, for they are brothers; rather they must serve them, because those who benefit from their good service are faithful and beloved. Teach and encourage these things.
3 Si quis aliter docet, et non acquiescit sanis sermonibus Domini nostri Iesu Christi, et ei, quae secundum pietatem est, doctrinae:
If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that is in accordance with godliness,
4 superbus est, nihil sciens, sed languens circa quaestiones, et pugnas verborum: ex quibus oriuntur invidiae, contentiones, blasphemiae, suspiciones malae,
he is puffed up and understands nothing. Moreover, he has an unhealthy desire for controversies and quarrels about words, from which come envy, strife, slanderous words, evil suspicions,
5 conflictationes hominum mente corruptorum, et qui veritate privati sunt, existimantium quaestum esse pietatem.
and constant disagreement among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, supposing that godliness is a means of gain. Keep away from such people.
6 Est autem quaestus magnus pietas cum sufficientia.
But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 Nihil enim intulimus in hunc mundum: haud dubium quod nec auferre quid possumus.
For we brought nothing into the world, and it is clear that we cannot bring anything out either,
8 Habentes autem alimenta, et quibus tegamur, his contenti simus.
but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.
9 Nam qui volunt divites fieri, incidunt in tentationem, et in laqueum diaboli, et desideria multa inutilia, et nociva, quae mergunt homines in interitum et perditionem.
But those who wish to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many senseless and harmful desires that sink people into ruin and destruction.
10 Radix enim omnium malorum est cupiditas: quam quidam appetentes erraverunt a fide, et inseruerunt se doloribus multis.
For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to become rich some have wandered away from the faith, piercing themselves with many sorrows.
11 Tu autem, o homo Dei haec fuge: sectare vero iustitiam, pietatem, fidem, charitatem, patientiam, mansuetudinem.
But as for yoʋ, O man of God, flee from these things, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faithfulness, love, endurance, and gentleness.
12 Certa bonum certamen fidei, apprehende vitam aeternam, in qua vocatus es, et confessus bonam confessionem coram multis testibus. (aiōnios g166)
Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which yoʋ were called and concerning which yoʋ made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. (aiōnios g166)
13 Praecipio tibi coram Deo, qui vivificat omnia, et Christo Iesu, qui testimonium reddidit sub Pontio Pilato, bonam confessionem:
I charge yoʋ before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who made the good confession in his testimony before Pontius Pilate,
14 ut serves mandatum sine macula, irreprehensibile usque in adventum Domini nostri Iesu Christi,
that yoʋ obey what has been commanded without fault or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 quem suis temporibus ostendet beatus et solus potens, Rex regum, et Dominus dominantium:
which God will reveal in his own time. He is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords,
16 qui solus habet immortalitatem, et lucem inhabitat inaccessibilem: quem nullus hominum vidit, sed nec videre potest: cui honor, et imperium sempiternum: Amen. (aiōnios g166)
who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has ever seen or is able to see. To him be honor and eternal power. Amen. (aiōnios g166)
17 Divitibus huius saeculi praecipe non sublime sapere, neque sperare in incerto divitiarum, sed in Deo vivo (qui praestat nobis omnia abunde ad fruendum) (aiōn g165)
Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty or to put their hope in the uncertainty of riches, but in the living God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. (aiōn g165)
18 bene agere, divites fieri in bonis operibus, facile tribuere, communicare,
Command them to do good, to be rich in good works, and to be generous and willing to share,
19 thesaurizare sibi fundamentum bonum in futurum, ut apprehendant veram vitam.
treasuring up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, so that they may take hold of eternal life.
20 O Timothee, depositum custodi, devitans profanas vocum novitates, et oppositiones falsi nominis scientiae,
O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to yoʋ and avoid the profane chatter and counterarguments of what is falsely called “knowledge.”
21 quam quidam promittentes, circa fidem exciderunt. Gratia tecum. Amen.
By professing it, some have strayed from the faith. Grace be with yoʋ. Amen.
