マタイの福音書 14
1 そのころ、国主ヘロデは、イエスのうわさを聞いて、
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,
2 侍従たちに言った。「あれはバプテスマのヨハネだ。ヨハネが死人の中からよみがえったのだ。だから、あんな力が彼のうちに働いているのだ。」
And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do show forth themselves in him.
3 実は、このヘロデは、自分の兄弟ピリポの妻ヘロデヤのことで、ヨハネを捕えて縛り、牢に入れたのであった。
For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.
4 それは、ヨハネが彼に、「あなたが彼女をめとるのは不法です。」と言い張ったからである。
For John said unto him, It is not lawful for you to have her.
5 ヘロデはヨハネを殺したかったが、群衆を恐れた。というのは、彼らはヨハネを預言者と認めていたからである。
And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
6 たまたまヘロデの誕生祝いがあって、ヘロデヤの娘がみなの前で踊りを踊ってヘロデを喜ばせた。
But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.
7 それで、彼は、その娘に、願う物は何でも必ず上げると、誓って堅い約束をした。
Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.
8 ところが、娘は母親にそそのかされて、こう言った。「今ここに、バプテスマのヨハネの首を盆に載せて私に下さい。」
And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger.
9 王は心を痛めたが、自分の誓いもあり、また列席の人々の手前もあって、与えるように命令した。
And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at food, he commanded it to be given her.
10 彼は人をやって、牢の中でヨハネの首をはねさせた。
And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
11 そして、その首は盆に載せて運ばれ、少女に与えられたので、少女はそれを母親のところに持って行った。
And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.
12 それから、ヨハネの弟子たちがやって来て、死体を引き取って葬った。そして、イエスのところに行って報告した。
And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
13 イエスはこのことを聞かれると、舟でそこを去り、自分だけで寂しい所に行かれた。すると、群衆がそれと聞いて、町々から、歩いてイエスのあとを追った。
When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.
14 イエスは舟から上がられると、多くの群衆を見られ、彼らを深くあわれんで、彼らの病気を直された。
And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
15 夕方になったので、弟子たちはイエスのところに来て言った。「ここは寂しい所ですし、時刻ももう回っています。ですから群衆を解散させてください。そして村に行ってめいめいで食物を買うようにさせてください。」
And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.
16 しかし、イエスは言われた。「彼らが出かけて行く必要はありません。あなたがたで、あの人たちに何か食べる物を上げなさい。」
But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give all of you them to eat.
17 しかし、弟子たちはイエスに言った。「ここには、パンが五つと魚が二匹よりほかありません。」
And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
18 すると、イエスは言われた。「それを、ここに持って来なさい。」
He said, Bring them here to me.
19 そしてイエスは、群衆に命じて草の上にすわらせ、五つのパンと二匹の魚を取り、天を見上げて、それらを祝福し、パンを裂いてそれを弟子たちに与えられたので、弟子たちは群衆に配った。
And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
20 人々はみな、食べて満腹した。そして、パン切れの余りを取り集めると、十二のかごにいっぱいあった。
And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
21 食べた者は、女と子どもを除いて、男五千人ほどであった。
And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.
22 それからすぐ、イエスは弟子たちを強いて舟に乗り込ませて、自分より先に向こう岸へ行かせ、その間に群衆を帰してしまわれた。
And immediately Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
23 群衆を帰したあとで、祈るために、ひとりで山に登られた。夕方になったが、まだそこに、ひとりでおられた。
And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
24 しかし、舟は、陸からもう何キロメートルも離れていたが、風が向かい風なので、波に悩まされていた。
But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
25 すると、夜中の三時ごろ、イエスは湖の上を歩いて、彼らのところに行かれた。
And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
26 弟子たちは、イエスが湖の上を歩いておられるのを見て、「あれは幽霊だ。」と言って、おびえてしまい、恐ろしさのあまり、叫び声を上げた。
And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
27 しかし、イエスはすぐに彼らに話しかけ、「しっかりしなさい。わたしだ。恐れることはない。」と言われた。
But immediately Jesus spoke unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
28 すると、ペテロが答えて言った。「主よ。もし、あなたでしたら、私に、水の上を歩いてここまで来い、とお命じになってください。」
And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be you, bid me come unto you on the water.
29 イエスは「来なさい。」と言われた。そこで、ペテロは舟から出て、水の上を歩いてイエスのほうに行った。
And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
30 ところが、風を見て、こわくなり、沈みかけたので叫び出し、「主よ。助けてください。」と言った。
But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
31 そこで、イエスはすぐに手を伸ばして、彼をつかんで言われた。「信仰の薄い人だな。なぜ疑うのか。」
And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O you of little faith, wherefore did you doubt?
32 そして、ふたりが舟に乗り移ると、風がやんだ。
And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
33 そこで、舟の中にいた者たちは、イエスを拝んで、「確かにあなたは神の子です。」と言った。
Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Truthfully you are the Son of God.
34 彼らは湖を渡ってゲネサレの地に着いた。
And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.
35 すると、その地の人々は、イエスと気がついて、付近の地域にくまなく知らせ、病人という病人をみな、みもとに連れて来た。
And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;
36 そして、せめて彼らに、着物のふさにでもさわらせてやってくださいと、イエスにお願いした。そして、さわった人々はみな、いやされた。
And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
