マタイの福音書 11
1 イエスはこのように十二弟子に注意を与え、それを終えられると、彼らの町々で教えたり宣べ伝えたりするため、そこを立ち去られた。
And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he passed from thence, to teach and preach in their cities.
2 さて、獄中でキリストのみわざについて聞いたヨハネは、その弟子たちに託して、
Now when John had heard in prison the works of Christ: sending two of his disciples he said to him:
3 イエスにこう言い送った。「おいでになるはずの方は、あなたですか。それとも、私たちは別の方を待つべきでしょうか。」
Art thou he that art to come, or look we for another?
4 イエスは答えて、彼らに言われた。「あなたがたは行って、自分たちの聞いたり見たりしていることをヨハネに報告しなさい。
And Jesus making answer said to them: Go and relate to John what you have heard and seen.
5 盲人が見、足なえが歩き、らい病人がきよめられ、つんぼの人が聞こえ、死人が生き返り、貧しい者には福音が宣べ伝えられているのです。
The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, the poor have the gospel preached to them.
6 だれでも、わたしにつまずかない者は幸いです。」
And blessed is he that shall not be scandalized in me.
7 この人たちが行ってしまうと、イエスは、ヨハネについて群衆に話しだされた。「あなたがたは、何を見に荒野に出て行ったのですか。風に揺れる葦ですか。
And when they went their way, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: What went you out into the desert to see? a reed shaken with the wind?
8 でなかったら、何を見に行ったのですか。柔らかい着物を着た人ですか。柔らかい着物を着た人なら王の宮殿にいます。
But what went you out to see? a man clothed in soft garments? Behold they that are clothed in soft garments, are in the houses of kings.
9 でなかったら、なぜ行ったのですか。預言者を見るためですか。そのとおり。だが、わたしが言いましょう。預言者よりもすぐれた者をです。
But what went you out to see? a prophet? yea I tell you, and more than a prophet.
10 この人こそ、 『見よ、わたしは使いをあなたの前に遣わし、 あなたの道を、あなたの前に備えさせよう。』 と書かれているその人です。
For this is he of whom it is written: Behold I send my angel before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.
11 まことに、あなたがたに告げます。女から生まれた者の中で、バプテスマのヨハネよりすぐれた人は出ませんでした。しかも、天の御国の一番小さい者でも、彼より偉大です。
Amen I say to you, there hath not risen among them that are born of women a greater than John the Baptist: yet he that is the lesser in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 バプテスマのヨハネの日以来今日まで、天の御国は激しく攻められています。そして、激しく攻める者たちがそれを奪い取っています。
And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent bear it away.
13 ヨハネに至るまで、すべての預言者たちと律法とが預言をしたのです。
For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John:
14 あなたがたが進んで受け入れるなら、実はこの人こそ、きたるべきエリヤなのです。
And if you will receive it, he is Elias that is to come.
15 耳のある者は聞きなさい。
He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
16 この時代は何にたとえたらよいでしょう。市場にすわっている子どもたちのようです。彼らは、ほかの子どもたちに呼びかけて、
But whereunto shall I esteem this generation to be like? It is like to children sitting in the market place.
17 こう言うのです。 『笛を吹いてやっても、君たちは踊らなかった。 弔いの歌を歌ってやっても、悲しまなかった。』
Who crying to their companions say: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have lamented, and you have not mourned.
18 ヨハネが来て、食べも飲みもしないと、人々は『あれは悪霊につかれているのだ。』と言い、
For John came neither eating nor drinking; and they say: He hath a devil.
19 人の子が来て食べたり飲んだりしていると、『あれ見よ。食いしんぼうの大酒飲み、取税人や罪人の仲間だ。』と言います。でも、知恵の正しいことは、その行ないが証明します。」
The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say: Behold a man that is a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of publicans and sinners. And wisdom is justified by her children.
20 それから、イエスは、数々の力あるわざの行なわれた町々が悔い改めなかったので、責め始められた。
Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein were done the most of his miracles, for that they had not done penance.
21 「ああコラジン。ああベツサイダ。おまえたちのうちで行なわれた力あるわざが、もしもツロとシドンで行なわれたのだったら、彼らはとうの昔に荒布をまとい、灰をかぶって悔い改めていたことだろう。
Woe to thee, Corozain, woe to thee, Bethsaida: for if in Tyre and Sidon had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in you, they had long ago done penance in sackcloth and ashes.
22 しかし、そのツロとシドンのほうが、おまえたちに言うが、さばきの日には、まだおまえたちよりは罰が軽いのだ。
But I say unto you, it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment, than for you.
23 カペナウム。どうしておまえが天に上げられることがありえよう。ハデスに落とされるのだ。おまえの中でなされた力あるわざが、もしもソドムでなされたのだったら、ソドムはきょうまで残っていたことだろう。 (Hadēs g86)
And thou Capharnaum, shalt thou be exalted up to heaven? thou shalt go down even unto hell. For if in Sodom had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in thee, perhaps it had remained unto this day. (Hadēs g86)
24 しかし、そのソドムの地のほうが、おまえたちに言うが、さばきの日には、まだおまえよりは罰が軽いのだ。」
But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
25 そのとき、イエスはこう言われた。「天地の主であられる父よ。あなたをほめたたえます。これらのことを、賢い者や知恵のある者には隠して、幼子たちに現わしてくださいました。
At that time Jesus answered and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to the little ones.
26 そうです、父よ。これがみこころにかなったことでした。
Yea, Father; for so hath it seemed good in thy sight.
27 すべてのものが、わたしの父から、わたしに渡されています。それで、父のほかには、子を知る者がなく、子と、子が父を知らせようと心に定めた人のほかは、だれも父を知る者がありません。
All things are delivered to me by my Father. And no one knoweth the Son, but the Father: neither doth any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal him.
28 すべて、疲れた人、重荷を負っている人は、わたしのところに来なさい。わたしがあなたがたを休ませてあげます。
Come to me, all you that labour, and are burdened, and I will refresh you.
29 わたしは心優しく、へりくだっているから、あなたがたもわたしのくびきを負って、わたしから学びなさい。そうすればたましいに安らぎが来ます。
Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls.
30 わたしのくびきは負いやすく、わたしの荷は軽いからです。」
For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.
