ヨハネの福音書 11
1 さて、ある人が病気にかかっていた。ラザロといって、マリヤとその姉妹マルタとの村の出で、ベタニヤの人であった。
Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 このマリヤは、主に香油を塗り、髪の毛でその足をぬぐったマリヤであって、彼女の兄弟ラザロが病んでいたのである。
(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
3 そこで姉妹たちは、イエスのところに使いを送って、言った。「主よ。ご覧ください。あなたが愛しておられる者が病気です。」
Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom you love is sick.
4 イエスはこれを聞いて、言われた。「この病気は死で終わるだけのものではなく、神の栄光のためのものです。神の子がそれによって栄光を受けるためです。」
When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
5 イエスはマルタとその姉妹とラザロとを愛しておられた。
Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
6 そのようなわけで、イエスは、ラザロが病んでいることを聞かれたときも、そのおられた所になお二日とどまられた。
When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
7 その後、イエスは、「もう一度ユダヤに行こう。」と弟子たちに言われた。
Then after that says he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
8 弟子たちはイエスに言った。「先生。たった今ユダヤ人たちが、あなたを石打ちにしようとしていたのに、またそこにおいでになるのですか。」
His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone you; and go you thither again?
9 イエスは答えられた。「昼間は十二時間あるでしょう。だれでも、昼間歩けば、つまずくことはありません。この世の光を見ているからです。
Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbles not, because he sees the light of this world.
10 しかし、夜歩けばつまずきます。光がその人のうちにないからです。」
But if a man walk in the night, he stumbles, because there is no light in him.
11 イエスは、このように話され、それから、弟子たちに言われた。「わたしたちの友ラザロは眠っています。しかし、わたしは彼を眠りからさましに行くのです。」
These things said he: and after that he says unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleeps; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
12 そこで弟子たちはイエスに言った。「主よ。眠っているのなら、彼は助かるでしょう。」
Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
13 しかし、イエスは、ラザロの死のことを言われたのである。だが、彼らは眠った状態のことを言われたものと思った。
Nevertheless Jesus spoke of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
14 そこで、イエスはそのとき、はっきりと彼らに言われた。「ラザロは死んだのです。
Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
15 わたしは、あなたがたのため、すなわちあなたがたが信じるためには、わたしがその場に居合わせなかったことを喜んでいます。さあ、彼のところへ行きましょう。」
And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent all of you may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
16 そこで、デドモと呼ばれるトマスが、弟子の仲間に言った。「私たちも行って、主といっしょに死のうではないか。」
Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
17 それで、イエスがおいでになってみると、ラザロは墓の中に入れられて四日もたっていた。
Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
18 ベタニヤはエルサレムに近く、三千メートルほど離れた所にあった。
Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
19 大ぜいのユダヤ人がマルタとマリヤのところに来ていた。その兄弟のことについて慰めるためであった。
And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20 マルタは、イエスが来られたと聞いて迎えに行った。マリヤは家ですわっていた。
Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
21 マルタはイエスに向かって言った。「主よ。もしここにいてくださったなら、私の兄弟は死ななかったでしょうに。
Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if you had been here, my brother had not died.
22 今でも私は知っております。あなたが神にお求めになることは何でも、神はあなたにお与えになります。」
But I know, that even now, whatsoever you will ask of God, God will give it you.
23 イエスは彼女に言われた。「あなたの兄弟はよみがえります。」
Jesus says unto her, Your brother shall rise again.
24 マルタはイエスに言った。「私は、終わりの日のよみがえりの時に、彼がよみがえることを知っております。」
Martha says unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
25 イエスは言われた。「わたしは、よみがえりです。いのちです。わたしを信じる者は、死んでも生きるのです。
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
And whosoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Believe you this? (aiōn g165)
27 彼女はイエスに言った。「はい。主よ。私は、あなたが世に来られる神の子キリストである、と信じております。」
She says unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
28 こう言ってから、帰って行って、姉妹マリヤを呼び、「先生が見えています。あなたを呼んでおられます。」とそっと言った。
And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master has come, and calls for you.
29 マリヤはそれを聞くと、すぐ立ち上がって、イエスのところに行った。
As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
30 さてイエスは、まだ村にはいらないで、マルタが出迎えた場所におられた。
Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
31 マリヤとともに家にいて、彼女を慰めていたユダヤ人たちは、マリヤが急いで立ち上がって出て行くのを見て、マリヤが墓に泣きに行くのだろうと思い、彼女について行った。
The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goes unto the grave to weep there.
32 マリヤは、イエスのおられた所に来て、お目にかかると、その足もとにひれ伏して言った。「主よ。もしここにいてくださったなら、私の兄弟は死ななかったでしょうに。」
Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother had not died.
33 そこでイエスは、彼女が泣き、彼女といっしょに来たユダヤ人たちも泣いているのをご覧になると、霊の憤りを覚え、心の動揺を感じて、
When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, (pneuma) and was troubled.
34 言われた。「彼をどこに置きましたか。」彼らはイエスに言った。「主よ。来てご覧ください。」
And said, Where have all of you laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
35 イエスは涙を流された。
Jesus wept.
36 そこで、ユダヤ人たちは言った。「ご覧なさい。主はどんなに彼を愛しておられたことか。」
Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
37 しかし、「盲人の目をあけたこの方が、あの人を死なせないでおくことはできなかったのか。」と言う者もいた。
And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
38 そこでイエスは、またも心のうちに憤りを覚えながら、墓に来られた。墓はほら穴であって、石がそこに立てかけてあった。
Jesus therefore again groaning in himself comes to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
39 イエスは言われた。「その石を取りのけなさい。」死んだ人の姉妹マルタは言った。「主よ。もう臭くなっておりましょう。四日になりますから。」
Jesus said, Take all of you away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, says unto him, Lord, by this time he stinks: for he has been dead four days.
40 イエスは彼女に言われた。「もしあなたが信じるなら、あなたは神の栄光を見る、とわたしは言ったではありませんか。」
Jesus says unto her, Said I not unto you, that, if you would believe, you should see the glory of God?
41 そこで、彼らは石を取りのけた。イエスは目を上げて、言われた。「父よ。わたしの願いを聞いてくださったことを感謝いたします。
Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank you that you have heard me.
42 わたしは、あなたがいつもわたしの願いを聞いてくださることを知っておりました。しかしわたしは、回りにいる群衆のために、この人々が、あなたがわたしをお遣わしになったことを信じるようになるために、こう申したのです。」
And I knew that you hear me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that you have sent me.
43 そして、イエスはそう言われると、大声で叫ばれた。「ラザロよ。出て来なさい。」
And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44 すると、死んでいた人が、手と足を長い布で巻かれたままで出て来た。彼の顔は布切れで包まれていた。イエスは彼らに言われた。「ほどいてやって、帰らせなさい。」
And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave clothes: and his face was bound about with a cloth. Jesus says unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
45 そこで、マリヤのところに来ていて、イエスがなさったことを見た多くのユダヤ人が、イエスを信じた。
Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.
46 しかし、そのうちの幾人かは、パリサイ人たちのところへ行って、イエスのなさったことを告げた。
But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
47 そこで、祭司長とパリサイ人たちは議会を召集して言った。「われわれは何をしているのか。あの人が多くのしるしを行なっているというのに。
Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man does many miracles.
48 もしあの人をこのまま放っておくなら、すべての人があの人を信じるようになる。そうなると、ローマ人がやって来て、われわれの土地も国民も奪い取ることになる。」
If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
49 しかし、彼らのうちのひとりで、その年の大祭司であったカヤパが、彼らに言った。「あなたがたは全然何もわかっていない。
And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, All of you know nothing at all,
50 ひとりの人が民の代わりに死んで、国民全体が滅びないほうが、あなたがたにとって得策だということも、考えに入れていない。」
Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
51 ところで、このことは彼が自分から言ったのではなくて、その年の大祭司であったので、イエスが国民のために死のうとしておられること、
And this spoke he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
52 また、ただ国民のためだけでなく、散らされている神の子たちを一つに集めるためにも死のうとしておられることを、預言したのである。
And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
53 そこで彼らは、その日から、イエスを殺すための計画を立てた。
Then from that day forth they took counsel together in order to put him to death.
54 そのために、イエスはもはやユダヤ人たちの間を公然と歩くことをしないで、そこから荒野に近い地方に去り、エフライムという町にはいり、弟子たちとともにそこに滞在された。
Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
55 さて、ユダヤ人の過越の祭りが間近であった。多くの人々が、身を清めるために、過越の祭りの前にいなかからエルサレムに上って来た。
And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.
56 彼らはイエスを捜し、宮の中に立って、互いに言った。「あなたがたはどう思いますか。あの方は祭りに来られることはないでしょうか。」
Then sought they for Jesus, and spoke among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think all of you, that he will not come to the feast?
57 さて、祭司長、パリサイ人たちはイエスを捕えるために、イエスがどこにいるかを知っている者は届け出なければならないという命令を出していた。
Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should show it, that they might take him.
