使徒の働き 24
1 五日の後、大祭司アナニヤは、数人の長老およびテルトロという弁護士といっしょに下って来て、パウロを総督に訴えた。
And after five days Ananias the high priest descended with the elders, and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul.
2 パウロが呼び出されると、テルトロが訴えを始めてこう言った。 「ペリクス閣下。閣下のおかげで、私たちはすばらしい平和を与えられ、また、閣下のご配慮で、この国の改革が進行しておりますが、
And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by you we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by your providence,
3 その事実をあらゆる面において、また至る所で認めて、私たちは心から感謝しております。
We accept it always, and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness.
4 さて、あまりご迷惑をおかけしないように、ごく手短に申し上げますから、ご寛容をもってお聞きくださるようお願いいたします。
Notwithstanding, that I be not wearisome anymore unto you, I pray you that you would hear us of your clemency a few words.
5 この男は、まるでペストのような存在で、世界中のユダヤ人の間に騒ぎを起こしている者であり、ナザレ人という一派の首領でございます。
For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:
6 この男は宮さえもけがそうとしましたので、私たちは彼を捕えました。
Who also has gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law.
7 閣下ご自身で、これらすべてのことについて彼をお調べくださいますなら、私たちが彼を訴えております事がらを、おわかりになっていただけるはずです。」
But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands,
Commanding his accusers to come unto you: by examining of whom yourself may take knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him.
9 ユダヤ人たちも、この訴えに同調し、全くそのとおりだと言った。
And the Jews also assented, saying that these things were so.
10 そのとき、総督がパウロに、話すようにと合図したので、パウロはこう答えた。 「閣下が多年に渡り、この民の裁判をつかさどる方であることを存じておりますので、私は喜んで弁明いたします。
Then Paul, after that the governor had beckoned unto him to speak, answered, Forasmuch as I know that you have been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself:
11 お調べになればわかることですが、私が礼拝のためにエルサレムに上って来てから、まだ十二日しかたっておりません。
Because that you may understand, that there are yet but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem in order to worship.
12 そして、宮でも会堂でも、また市内でも、私がだれかと論争したり、群衆を騒がせたりするのを見た者はありません。
And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither raising up the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city:
13 いま私を訴えていることについて、彼らは証拠をあげることができないはずです。
Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me.
14 しかし、私は、彼らが異端と呼んでいるこの道に従って、私たちの先祖の神に仕えていることを、閣下の前で承認いたします。私は、律法にかなうことと、預言者たちが書いていることとを全部信じています。
But this I confess unto you, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:
15 また、義人も悪人も必ず復活するという、この人たち自身も抱いている望みを、神にあって抱いております。
And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.
16 そのために、私はいつも、神の前にも人の前にも責められることのない良心を保つように、と最善を尽くしています。
And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void to offence toward God, and toward men.
17 さて私は、同胞に対して施しをし、また供え物をささげるために、幾年ぶりかで帰って来ました。
Now after many years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings.
18 その供え物のことで私は清めを受けて宮の中にいたのを彼らに見られたのですが、別に群衆もおらず、騒ぎもありませんでした。ただアジヤから来た幾人かのユダヤ人がおりました。
Whereupon certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with multitude, nor with tumult.
19 もし彼らに、私について何か非難したいことがあるなら、自分で閣下の前に来て訴えるべきです。
Who ought to have been here before you, and object, if they had ought against me.
20 でなければ、今ここにいる人々に、議会の前に立っていたときの私にどんな不正を見つけたかを言わせてください。
Or else let these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council,
21 彼らの中に立っていたとき、私はただ一言、『死者の復活のことで、私はきょう、あなたがたの前でさばかれているのです。』と叫んだにすぎません。」
Except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Concerning the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day.
22 しかしペリクスは、この道について相当詳しい知識を持っていたので、「千人隊長ルシヤが下って来るとき、あなたがたの事件を解決することにしよう。」と言って、裁判を延期した。
And when Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the uttermost of your matter.
23 そして百人隊長に、パウロを監禁するように命じたが、ある程度の自由を与え、友人たちが世話をすることを許した。
And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul, and to let him have liberty, and that he should forbid none of his acquaintance to minister or come unto him.
24 数日後、ペリクスはユダヤ人である妻ドルシラを連れて来て、パウロを呼び出し、キリスト・イエスを信じる信仰について話を聞いた。
And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.
25 しかし、パウロが正義と節制とやがて来る審判とを論じたので、ペリクスは恐れを感じ、「今は帰ってよい。おりを見て、また呼び出そう。」と言った。
And as he reasoned of righteousness, wilful restrain, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go your way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for you.
26 それとともに、彼はパウロから金をもらいたい下心があったので、幾度もパウロを呼び出して話し合った。
He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him.
27 二年たって後、ポルキオ・フェストがペリクスの後任になったが、ペリクスはユダヤ人に恩を売ろうとして、パウロを牢につないだままにしておいた。
But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix' room: and Felix, willing to show the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.
