使徒の働き 12
1 そのころ、ヘロデ王は、教会の中のある人々を苦しめようとして、その手を伸ばし、
Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.
2 ヨハネの兄弟ヤコブを剣で殺した。
And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
3 それがユダヤ人の気に入ったのを見て、次にはペテロをも捕えにかかった。それは、種なしパンの祝いの時期であった。
And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)
4 ヘロデはペテロを捕えて牢に入れ、四人一組の兵士四組に引き渡して監視させた。それは、過越の祭りの後に、民の前に引き出す考えであったからである。
And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.
5 こうしてペテロは牢に閉じ込められていた。教会は彼のために、神に熱心に祈り続けていた。
Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.
6 ところでヘロデが彼を引き出そうとしていた日の前夜、ペテロは二本の鎖につながれてふたりの兵士の間で寝ており、戸口には番兵たちが牢を監視していた。
And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.
7 すると突然、主の御使いが現われ、光が牢を照らした。御使いはペテロのわき腹をたたいて彼を起こし、「急いで立ち上がりなさい。」と言った。すると、鎖が彼の手から落ちた。
And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he stroke Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.
8 そして御使いが、「帯を締めて、くつをはきなさい。」と言うので、彼はそのとおりにした。すると、「上着を着て、私について来なさい。」と言った。
And the angel said unto him, Gird yourself, and bind on your sandals. And so he did. And he says unto him, Cast your garment about you, and follow me.
9 そこで、外に出て、御使いについて行った。彼には御使いのしている事が現実の事だとはわからず、幻を見ているのだと思われた。
And he went out, and followed him; and know not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.
10 彼らが、第一、第二の衛所を通り、町に通じる鉄の門まで来ると、門がひとりでに開いた。そこで、彼らは外に出て、ある通りを進んで行くと、御使いは、たちまち彼を離れた。
When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leads unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.
11 そのとき、ペテロは我に返って言った。「今、確かにわかった。主は御使いを遣わして、ヘロデの手から、また、ユダヤ人たちが待ち構えていたすべての災いから、私を救い出してくださったのだ。」
And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know certainly, that the LORD has sent his angel, and has delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.
12 こうとわかったので、ペテロは、マルコと呼ばれているヨハネの母マリヤの家へ行った。そこには大ぜいの人が集まって、祈っていた。
And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.
13 彼が入口の戸をたたくと、ロダという女中が応対に出て来た。
And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.
14 ところが、ペテロの声だとわかると、喜びのあまり門をあけもしないで、奥へ駆け込み、ペテロが門の外に立っていることをみなに知らせた。
And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.
15 彼らは、「あなたは気が狂っているのだ。」と言ったが、彼女はほんとうだと言い張った。そこで彼らは、「それは彼の御使いだ。」と言っていた。
And they said unto her, You are mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.
16 しかし、ペテロはたたき続けていた。彼らが門をあけると、そこにペテロがいたので、非常に驚いた。
But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.
17 しかし彼は、手ぶりで彼らを静かにさせ、主がどのようにして牢から救い出してくださったかを、彼らに話して聞かせた。それから、「このことをヤコブと兄弟たちに知らせてください。」と言って、ほかの所へ出て行った。
But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go show these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.
18 さて、朝になると、ペテロはどうなったのかと、兵士たちの間に大騒ぎが起こった。
Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.
19 ヘロデは彼を捜したが見つけることができないので、番兵たちを取り調べ、彼らを処刑するように命じ、そして、ユダヤからカイザリヤに下って行って、そこに滞在した。
And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.
20 さて、ヘロデはツロとシドンの人々に対して強い敵意を抱いていた。そこで彼らはみなでそろって彼をたずね、王の侍従ブラストに取り入って和解を求めた。その地方は王の国から食糧を得ていたからである。
And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king's country.
21 定められた日に、ヘロデは王服を着けて、王座に着き、彼らに向かって演説を始めた。
And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.
22 そこで民衆は、「神の声だ。人間の声ではない。」と叫び続けた。
And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.
23 するとたちまち、主の使いがヘロデを打った。ヘロデが神に栄光を帰さなかったからである。彼は虫にかまれて息が絶えた。
And immediately the angel of the Lord stroke him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the spirit.
24 主のみことばは、ますます盛んになり、広まって行った。
But the word (logos) of God grew and multiplied.
25 任務を果たしたバルナバとサウロは、マルコと呼ばれるヨハネを連れて、エルサレムから帰って来た。
And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark.
