コリント人への手紙第一 13
1 たとい、私が人の異言や、御使いの異言で話しても、愛がないなら、やかましいどらや、うるさいシンバルと同じです。
If I speak with the tongues of men, and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
2 また、たとい私が預言の賜物を持っており、またあらゆる奥義とあらゆる知識とに通じ、また、山を動かすほどの完全な信仰を持っていても、愛がないなら、何の値うちもありません。
And if I should have prophecy and should know all mysteries, and all knowledge, and if I should have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
3 また、たとい私が持っている物の全部を貧しい人たちに分け与え、また私のからだを焼かれるために渡しても、愛がなければ、何の役にも立ちません。
And if I should distribute all my goods to feed the poor, and if I should deliver my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
4 愛は寛容であり、愛は親切です。また人をねたみません。愛は自慢せず、高慢になりません。
Charity is patient, is kind: charity envieth not, dealeth not perversely; is not puffed up;
5 礼儀に反することをせず、自分の利益を求めず、怒らず、人のした悪を思わず、
Is not ambitious, seeketh not her own, is not provoked to anger, thinketh no evil;
6 不正を喜ばずに真理を喜びます。
Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth with the truth;
7 すべてをがまんし、すべてを信じ、すべてを期待し、すべてを耐え忍びます。
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
8 愛は決して絶えることがありません。預言の賜物ならばすたれます。異言ならばやみます。知識ならばすたれます。
Charity never falleth away: whether prophecies shall be made void, or tongues shall cease, or knowledge shall be destroyed.
9 というのは、私たちの知っているところは一部分であり、預言することも一部分だからです。
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
10 完全なものが現われたら、不完全なものはすたれます。
But when that which is perfect is come, that which is in part shall be done away.
11 私が子どもであったときには、子どもとして話し、子どもとして考え、子どもとして論じましたが、おとなになったときには、子どものことをやめました。
When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. But, when I became a man, I put away the things of a child.
12 今、私たちは鏡にぼんやり映るものを見ていますが、その時には顔と顔とを合わせて見ることになります。今、私は一部分しか知りませんが、その時には、私が完全に知られているのと同じように、私も完全に知ることになります。
We see now through a glass in a dark manner; but then face to face. Now I know I part; but then I shall know even as I am known.
13 こういうわけで、いつまでも残るものは信仰と希望と愛です。その中で一番すぐれているのは愛です。
And now there remain faith, hope, and charity, these three: but the greatest of these is charity.
