ルカの福音書 14

1 彼が安息日にファリサイ人たちの支配者たちの一人の家に入った時のこと，彼らは彼の様子をうかがっていた。

And it came to pass, when he went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on a sabbath to eat bread, that they were watching him.

2 見よ，水腫をわずらっている人が彼の前にいた。

And behold, there was before him a certain man which had the dropsy.

3 イエスはそれに応じて，律法の専門家たちやファリサイ人たちに話して，こう言った。「安息日にいやすことは許されているか」 。

And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath, or not?

4 だが，彼らは黙っていた。 彼はその人の手を取って，いやし，去らせた。

But they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go.

5 彼らに答えた，「あなた方のうち，息子や牛が井戸の中に落ちた場合，安息日だからといってすぐに引き上げない者がいるだろうか」 。

And he said unto them, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a well, and will not straightway draw him up on a sabbath day?

6 これらのことについても，彼らは彼に答えることができなかった。

And they could not answer again unto these things.

7 招かれた人々が上席を選ぶ様子に気づくと，彼らにたとえで話して，こう言った。

And he spake a parable unto those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief seats; saying unto them,

8 「だれかから婚宴に招かれた時は，上席に着いてはいけない。あなたより身分の高い人も招かれているかも知れないからだ。

When thou art bidden of any man to a marriage feast, sit not down in the chief seat; lest haply a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him,

9 そうすると，あなた方双方を招いた人がやって来て，『この人のために場所を空けてください』とあなたに告げるだろう。その時，あなたは恥をかきながら最も低い場所に着くことになる。

and he that bade thee and him shall come and say to thee, Give this man place; and then thou shalt begin with shame to take the lowest place.

10 だが，あなた方が招かれた時は，行って，最も低い場所に着きなさい。そうすれば，あなたを招いた人がやって来た時，『友よ，もっと高い方へ移ってください』とあなたに告げるだろう。その時，共に食卓に着いているみんなの前で，あなたは誉れを受けるだろう。

But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest place; that when he that hath bidden thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have glory in the presence of all that sit at meat with thee.

11 だれでも自分を高くする者は低くされ，自分を低くする者は高くされるのだ」 。

For every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

12 彼は自分を招いた人にも言った，「あなたが昼食や夕食を設ける時は，自分の友人たちも，兄弟たちも，親族たちも，富んでいる隣人たちも呼んではいけない。そうでないと。彼らも逆にもてなして，あなたに返礼することになるかも知れない。

And he said to him also that had bidden him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen, nor rich neighbours; lest haply they also bid thee again, and a recompense be made thee.

13 だが，あなたが祝宴を催す時には，貧しい人たち，足の不自由な人たち，また盲人たちを招きなさい。

But when thou makest a feast, bid the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

14 そうすれば，彼らはあなたに報いる手段がないので，あなたは幸いだ。あなたは義人たちの復活において報いを受けることになるからだ」 。

and thou shalt be blessed; because they have not [wherewith] to recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed in the resurrection of the just.

15 これらのことを聞くと，彼と共に食卓に着いていた者たちの一人が彼に言った，「神の王国で祝宴にあずかる人は幸いです！」

And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

16 するとイエスは彼に言った，「ある人が盛大な晩さんを設けて，大勢の人々を招いた。

But he said unto him, A certain man made a great supper; and he bade many:

17 晩さんの時刻に自分の召使いたちを遣わして，招いておいた者たちに言った，『おいでください。もうすっかり整いましたから』。

and he sent forth his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for [all] things are now ready.

18 彼らは皆，いっせいに言い訳をし始めた。 「最初の者は彼に言った，『畑を買いましたので，見に行かなければなりません。どうぞお許しください』。

And they all with one [consent] began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a field, and I must needs go out and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

19 「別の者は言った，『五くびきの牛を買いましたので，試しに行かなければなりません。どうぞお許しください』。

And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.

20 「別の者は言った，『妻をめとりましたので，そのために参ることができません』。

And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

21 「召使いはやって来て，主人にこれらのことを告げた。すると家の主人は腹を立て，召使いに言った，『急いで町の通りや小道に出て行き，貧しい人たち，体の不自由な人たち，盲人たち，また足の不自由な人たちを連れて来なさい』。

And the servant came, and told his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor and maimed and blind and lame.

22 「召使いは言った，『ご主人様，おおせのとおりにしましたが，まだ場所が余っています』。

And the servant said, Lord, what thou didst command is done, and yet there is room.

23 「主人は召使いに言った，『大通りや垣根に出て行き，無理にでも人々を入って来させて，わたしの家がいっぱいになるようにしなさい。

And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and constrain [them] to come in, that my house may be filled.

24 お前たちに告げるが，招かれていた者たちのうち，わたしの晩さんを味わう者はひとりもいないだろう』」 。

For I say unto you, that none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

25 さて，大群衆が彼と共に歩いていた。彼は振り向いて彼らに言った，

Now there went with him great multitudes: and he turned, and said unto them,

26 「だれでもわたしのもとに来て，自分の父，母，妻，子供たち，兄弟たち，姉妹たち，そうだ，自分の命さえも憎まない者は，わたしの弟子になることはできない。

If any man cometh unto me, and hateth not his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

27 だれでも自分の十字架を背負ってわたしの後に付いて来ない者は，わたしの弟子になることはできない。

Whosoever doth not bear his own cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

28 あなた方のうちのだれが，塔を建てたいと望みながら，まず座って費用を計算し，それを完成させるだけのものがあるかを確かめないだろうか。

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doth not first sit down and count the cost, whether he have [wherewith] to complete it?

29 そうしないと，土台を据えただけで仕上げられなかった時，見ているすべての人が彼をあざけり始めて

Lest haply, when he hath laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all that behold begin to mock him,

30 言うことだろう，『この人は建て始めたが，仕上げることができなかった』。

saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

31 あるいは，どんな王が，別の王と戦いを交えようとするときに，まず座って，二万人を率いて向かって来る者を，一万人で迎え撃つことができるかどうか，よく考えないだろうか。

Or what king, as he goeth to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

32 もしできないのであれば，一方の者がまだ遠くにいる間に使者を送り，和平の条件を尋ねるのだ。

Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and asketh conditions of peace.

33 そのようなわけで，だれでもあなた方のうちで自分の持ち物すべてを捨てない者は，わたしの弟子になることはできない。

So therefore whosoever he be of you that renounceth not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

34 塩は良いものだ。だが塩の塩気が抜けて味がなくなったら，あなた方は何によって塩に味を付けるのか。

Salt therefore is good: but if even the salt have lost its savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

35 それは土にもたい肥にも適さない。それは投げ出されるのだ。聞く耳のある者は聞きなさい」 。

It is fit neither for the land nor for the dunghill: [men] cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
