Proverbi 30
1 Le parole di Agur, figliuolo d'Iache; il sermone profetico che quell'uomo pronunziò ad Itiel; ad Itiel, e ad Ucal.
The words of Agur the son of Yakeh, even the prophecy: the man said unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ukkal,
2 CERTO io [son] troppo idiota, per esser gran personaggio; E non ho pur l'intendimento d'un uomo volgare;
“Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a common man.
3 E non ho imparata sapienza; Ma io so la scienza de' santi.
Nor have I learned wisdom, so that I should have knowledge of the Holy One.
4 Chi è salito in cielo, e [n'è] disceso? Chi ha raccolto il vento nelle sue pugna? Chi ha serrate le acque nella sua vesta? Chi ha posti tutti i confini della terra? Quale [è] il suo nome, o quale [è] il nome del suo figliuolo, Se tu [il] sai?
Who was it that ascended into heaven, and came down again? who gathered the wind in his fists? who bound the waters in a garment? who set up all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou knowest it?”
5 Ogni parola di Dio [è] purgata col fuoco; Egli [è] scudo a coloro che sperano in lui.
Every saying of God is purified: he is a shield unto those that put their trust in him.
6 Non aggiungere alle sue parole; Che talora egli non ti arguisca, e che tu non sii trovato bugiardo.
Do not add aught unto his words: lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
7 Io ti ho chieste due cose, [o Dio]; Non rifiutarme[le] avanti che io muoia:
Two things do I request of thee: deny them not to me before I die.
8 Allontana da me vanità e parole di bugia; Non mandarmi povertà, nè ricchezze; Cibami del mio pane quotidiano;
Vanity and lying words do thou remove far from me: neither poverty nor riches give thou unto me; let me eat the bread appointed unto me:
9 Che talora io non mi satolli, [e ti] rinneghi, E dica: Chi [è] il Signore? Che talora altresì io non impoverisca, e rubi, Ed usi indegnamente il Nome dell'Iddio mio.
Lest I become over-full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I become poor, and steal, and trespass against the name of my God.
10 Non dir male del servo appo il suo padrone; Che talora egli non ti maledica, e tu ti renda colpevole.
Do not calumniate a servant unto his master: lest he curse thee, and thou incur guilt.
11 [Vi è] una generazione [d'uomini che] maledice suo padre; E non benedice sua madre.
There is a generation that curseth its father, and doth not bless its mother.
12 [Vi è] una generazione [d'uomini che] si reputa netta, E non è lavata della sua lordura.
There is a generation that is pure in its own eyes, and yet is not washed [clean] of its filthiness.
13 [Vi è] una generazione [d'uomini] che ha gli occhi grandemente elevati, E le palpebre alzate.
There is a generation—O how lofty are its eyes! and its eyelids are so lifted up.
14 [Vi è] una generazione [d'uomini] i cui denti [sono] spade, Ed i mascellari coltelli, Per divorare i poveri d'in su la terra, Ed i bisognosi d'infra gli uomini.
There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and whose string teeth are as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.
15 La mignatta ha due figliuole, [che dicono: ] Apporta, apporta. Queste tre cose non si saziano giammai; [Anzi queste] quattro non dicono [giammai: ] Basta!
Insatiability hath two daughters, [crying, ] Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things which never say, Enough:
16 Il sepolcro, la matrice sterile, La terra [che] non si sazia [giammai] d'acqua, E il fuoco, [che giammai] non dice: Basta! (Sheol h7585)
The nether world; and a barren womb; the earth which is not satisfied with water; and the fire which never saith, Enough. (Sheol h7585)
17 I corvi del torrente trarranno, E i figli dell'aquila mangeranno gli occhi Di chi beffa suo padre, E sprezza di ubbidire a sua madre.
The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, this shall the ravens of the valley pick out; and the young eagles shall eat it.
18 Queste tre cose mi sono occulte; [Anzi], io non conosco [queste] quattro:
Three things there are which are too wonderful for me; and four, which I know not:
19 La traccia dell'aquila nell'aria, La traccia del serpente sopra il sasso, La traccia della nave in mezzo del mare, La traccia dell'uomo nella giovane.
The way of the eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the heart of the sea; and the way of a man with a young woman.
20 Tale [è] il procedere della donna adultera; Ella mangia, e si frega la bocca, E dice: Io non ho commessa alcuna iniquità.
Such is the way of an adulterous woman: she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wrong.
21 Per tre cose la terra trema; Anzi per quattro, [ch]'ella non può comportare:
Under three things the earth trembleth, and under four which she cannot bear:
22 Per lo servo, quando regna; E [per] l'uomo stolto, quando è satollo di pane;
Under a servant when he becometh king, and a worthless fool when he hath eaten enough bread;
23 Per la [donna] odiosa, quando si marita; E [per] la serva, quando è erede della sua padrona.
Under an odious woman when she is married, and a bond-woman when she dispossesseth her mistress.
24 Queste quattro cose [son] delle più piccole della terra, E pur [son] savie, [e] molto avvedute:
There are four which are the little ones of the earth, and they are nevertheless exceedingly wise:
25 Le formiche, [che sono] un popolo senza forze, E pure apparecchiano di state il lor cibo;
The ants are a people not strong, therefore do they prepare in the summer their food;
26 I conigli, [che sono] un popolo senza potenza, E pur fanno i lor ricetti nelle roccie;
The conies are but a feeble people, therefore do they place on the rocks their houses;
27 Le locuste, [che] non hanno re, E pure escono fuori tutte a stormo, divise per ischiere;
The locusts have no king, and yet they go forth in troops altogether;
28 Il ramarro, [che] si aggrappa con le mani, Ed è ne' palazzi dei re.
The spider thou canst catch with [thy] hands, and yet she is in the palaces of a king.
29 Queste tre cose hanno un bel passo; Anzi queste quattro hanno una bella andatura:
Three there are that have a stately step, and four, that are stately in going:
30 Il leone, la più forte delle bestie, Che non si volge indietro per tema di alcuno;
The lion, the mightiest among beasts, who turneth not round from before any one;
31 Il gallo compresso di fianchi, e il becco, E il re, appresso al quale niuno [può] levare [il capo].
The light-legged greyhound, and the he-goat; and a king, against whom there is no rising up.
32 Se tu hai fatto qualche follia, innalzandoti; Ovvero, se hai divisato alcun male, [mettiti] la mano in su la bocca.
If thou hast become degraded by lifting up thyself, or if thou hast devised evil, put thy hand to thy mouth:
33 Perciocchè, [come] chi rimena il latte [ne] fa uscir del burro; E chi stringe il naso, [ne] fa uscir del sangue; Così ancora chi preme l'ira [ne] fa uscir contesa.
For the pressure of milk bringeth forth butter, and the pressure of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the pressure of wrath bringeth forth strife.
