Ecclesiaste 9

1 PERCIOCCHÈ io mi ho recate tutte queste cose al cuore, eziandio per chiarir tutto questo: come i giusti e i savi, e i fatti loro, [essendo] nella man di Dio, gli uomini non conoscono nè l'amore, nè l'odio: tutto [è] davanti a loro.

I have surely giuen mine heart to all this, and to declare all this, that the iust, and the wise, and their workes are in the hand of God: and no man knoweth eyther loue or hatred of all that is before them.

2 Tutte le cose [avvengono] simigliantemente a tutti; un medesimo avvenimento [avviene] al giusto, ed all'empio; al buono e puro, ed all'immondo; a chi sacrifica, ed a chi non sacrifica; quale [è] il buono, tale [è] il peccatore; [tal] chi giura, qual chi teme di giurare.

All things come alike to all: and the same condition is to the iust and to the wicked, to the good and to the pure, and to the polluted, and to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner, he that sweareth, as he that feareth an othe.

3 Quest'[è] una cosa molesta, fra tutte quelle che si fanno sotto il sole, che un medesimo avvenimento [avviene] a tutti; ed anche, [che] mentre i figliuoli degli uomini sono in vita, il cuor loro è pien di male, ed hanno delle follie al cuore; e dopo ciò, [vanno] a' morti.

This is euill among all that is done vnder the sunne, that there is one condition to all, and also the heart of the sonnes of men is full of euill, and madnes is in their heartes whiles they liue, and after that, they goe to the dead.

4 Perciocchè, chi è che faccia eccezione? Vi è qualche speranza per tutti quelli che sono in vita; conciossiachè la condizione d'un can vivo sia migliore che quella d'un leone morto.

Surely whosoeuer is ioyned to all ye liuing, there is hope: for it is better to a liuing dog, then to a dead lyon.

5 Perciocchè i viventi sanno che morranno; ma i morti non sanno nulla, e non vi è più alcun premio per loro; perciocchè la lor memoria è dimenticata.

For the liuing knowe that they shall dye, but the dead knowe nothing at all: neither haue they any more a rewarde: for their remembrance is forgotten.

6 Già e il loro amore, e il loro odio, e la loro invidia è perita; e non hanno giammai più parte alcuna in tutto quello che si fa sotto il sole.

Also their loue, and their hatred, and their enuie is now perished, and they haue no more portion for euer, in all that is done vnder the sunne.

7 Va', mangia il tuo pane allegramente, e bevi il tuo vino di cuore lieto; se pure Iddio gradisce le tue opere.

Goe, eate thy bread with ioy, and drinke thy wine with a cheerefull heart: for God nowe accepteth thy workes.

8 Sieno in ogni tempo i tuoi vestimenti bianchi; e l'olio [odorifero] non venga meno in sul tuo capo.

At all times let thy garments be white, and let not oyle be lacking vpon thine head.

9 Godi della vita con la moglie che tu ami, tutti i giorni della vita della tua vanità, i quali [Iddio] ti ha dati sotto il sole, tutto il tempo della tua vanità; perciocchè questa è la tua parte nella [tua] vita, e [il frutto] della tua fatica, che tu duri sotto il sole.

Reioyce with the wife whom thou hast loued all the dayes of the life of thy vanitie, which God hath giuen thee vnder the sunne all the dayes of thy vanitie: for this is thy portion in the life, and in thy trauaile wherein thou labourest vnder the sunne.

10 Fa' a tuo potere tutto quello che avrai modo di fare; perciocchè sotterra, ove tu vai, non vi [è] nè opera, nè ragione, nè conoscimento, nè sapienza alcuna. (Sheol h7585)

All that thine hand shall finde to doe, doe it with all thy power: for there is neither worke nor inuention, nor knowledge, nor wisedome in the graue whither thou goest. (Sheol h7585)

11 DI nuovo, io ho veduto sotto il sole, che il correre non [è in poter] de' leggieri, nè il far la guerra [in poter] de' prodi, nè [l'aver del] pane [in poter] de' savi, nè [l'acquistar] ricchezze [in poter] de' prudenti, nè [d'essere in] grazia [in poter] degl'intendenti; conciossiachè ad essi tutti avvengano tempi e casi.

I returned, and I sawe vnder the sunne that the race is not to the swift, nor the battell to the strong, nor yet bread to the wise, nor also riches to men of vnderstanding, neither yet fauour to men of knowledge: but time and chance commeth to them all.

12 Perciocchè l'uomo non pur conosce il suo tempo. Come i pesci, che son presi con la mala rete; e come gli uccelli, che son colti col laccio; così sono allacciati i figliuoli degli uomini, al tempo dell'avversità, quando cade loro di subito addosso.

For neither doth man knowe his time, but as the fishes which are taken in an euill net, and as the birdes that are caught in the snare: so are the children of men snared in the euill time when it falleth vpon them suddenly.

13 Pure ancora ho veduta questa sapienza sotto il sole, che mi è paruta grande:

I haue also seene this wisedome vnder the sunne, and it is great vnto me.

14 [vi era] una piccola città con pochi uomini dentro; ed un gran re venne contro ad essa, e l'intorniò, e fece di gran bastie contro ad essa;

A litle citie and fewe men in it, and a great King came against it, and compassed it about, and builded fortes against it.

15 e in essa si trovò un povero uomo savio, il qual liberò la città con la sua sapienza, benchè niuno si ricordasse di quel povero uomo.

And there was founde therein a poore and wise man, and he deliuered the citie by his wisedome: but none remembred this poore man.

16 Allora io dissi: Meglio val sapienza che forza; benchè la sapienza del povero sia sprezzata, e che le sue parole non sieno ascoltate.

Then said I, Better is wisdome then strength: yet the wisedome of the poore is despised, and his wordes are not heard.

17 Le parole de' savi devono esser più quietamente ascoltate, che la grida d'un signore fra gli stolti.

The wordes of the wise are more heard in quietnes, then the crye of him that ruleth among fooles.

18 La sapienza val meglio che gli strumenti bellici; ma un sol peccatore fa perire un gran bene.

Better is wisedome then weapons of warre: but one sinner destroyeth much good.
