Pengkhotbah 1
1 Kata-kata dalam buku ini berasal dari Sang Pemikir, putra Daud, yang menggantikan Daud menjadi raja di Yerusalem.
The words of Koheleth, the son of David, the king in Jerusalem.
2 Sang Pemikir berkata: Semuanya sia-sia dan tidak berguna! Hidup itu percuma, semuanya tak ada artinya.
Vanity of vanities, saith Koheleth, vanity of vanities: all is vanity.
3 Seumur hidup kita bekerja, memeras keringat. Tetapi, mana hasilnya yang dapat kita banggakan?
What profit hath a man of all his toil which he toil-eth under the sun?
4 Keturunan yang satu muncul dan keturunan yang lain lenyap, tetapi dunia tetap sama saja.
One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh; but the earth endureth for ever.
5 Matahari masih terbit dan masih pula terbenam. Dengan letih ia kembali ke tempatnya semula, lalu terbit lagi.
The sun also riseth, and the sun goeth down, and striving to reach his place he riseth again there.
6 Angin bertiup ke selatan, lalu berhembus ke utara; ia berputar-putar, lalu kembali lagi.
Going toward the south, and turning round toward the north, the wind moveth round about continually; and around its circles doth the wind return again.
7 Semua sungai mengalir ke laut, tetapi laut tak kunjung penuh. Airnya kembali ke hulu sungai, lalu mulai mengalir lagi.
All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is never full: unto the place whither the rivers go, thither will they continue to go.
8 Segalanya membosankan dan kebosanan itu tidak terkatakan. Mata kita tidak kenyang-kenyang memandang; telinga kita tidak puas-puas mendengar.
All things weary themselves [constantly]; man can not utter them: the eye is never satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
9 Apa yang pernah terjadi, akan terjadi lagi. Apa yang pernah dilakukan, akan dilakukan lagi. Tidak ada sesuatu yang baru di dunia ini.
That which hath been, is the same which will be; and that which hath been done, is the same which will be done; and there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Ada orang yang berkata, "Lihatlah, ini baru!" Tetapi, itu sudah ada sebelum kita lahir.
If there be any thing whereof it is said, See, this is new: It hath already been in olden times which were before us.
11 Orang tak akan ingat kejadian di masa lalu. Begitu pun kejadian sekarang dan nanti, tidak akan dikenang oleh orang di masa mendatang.
[Only] there is no recollection of former [generations]; and also of the later ones, that are to be—of these [likewise] there will be no recollection with those that will be still later.
12 Aku, Sang Pemikir, memerintah di Yerusalem sebagai raja atas Israel.
I Koheleth was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
13 Aku bertekad untuk menyelidiki dan mempelajari dengan bijaksana segala yang terjadi di dunia ini. Nasib yang disediakan Allah bagi kita sungguh menyedihkan.
And I directed my heart to inquire and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the heavens: this is an evil employment which God hath given to the sons of man to busy themselves therewith.
14 Aku telah melihat segala perbuatan orang di dunia ini. Percayalah, semuanya itu sia-sia, seperti usaha mengejar angin.
I saw all the deeds that are done under the sun: and, behold, all is vanity and a torture of the spirit.
15 Yang bengkok tak dapat diluruskan, dan yang tak ada tak dapat dihitung.
What is crooked cannot be made straight; and that which is defective cannot be numbered.
16 Pikirku, "Aku ini telah menjadi orang penting dan arif, jauh lebih arif daripada semua orang yang memerintah di Yerusalem sebelum aku. Aku mengumpulkan banyak pengetahuan dan ilmu."
I spoke with my own heart, saying, Lo, I have truly obtained greater and more wisdom than all those who have been before me over Jerusalem: yea, my heart had seen much wisdom and knowledge.
17 Maka aku bertekad untuk mengetahui perbedaan antara pengetahuan dan kebodohan, antara kebijaksanaan dan kedunguan. Tetapi ternyata aku ini seperti mengejar angin saja.
And I directed my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly; [but] I have perceived that this also is a torture of the spirit.
18 Sebab semakin banyak hikmat kita, semakin banyak pula kecemasan kita. Semakin banyak pengetahuan kita, semakin banyak pula kesusahan kita.
For where there is much wisdom there is much vexation: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth pain.
