Ἰώβ 38
1 Τότε απεκρίθη ο Κύριος προς τον Ιώβ εκ του ανεμοστροβίλου και είπε·
Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind,
2 Τις ούτος, όστις σκοτίζει την βουλήν μου διά λόγων ασυνέτων;
“Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Ζώσον ήδη την οσφύν σου ως ανήρ· διότι θέλω σε ερωτήσει, και φανέρωσόν μοι.
Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me!
4 Που ήσο ότε εθεμελίονον την γην; απάγγειλον, εάν έχης σύνεσιν.
“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.
5 Τις έθεσε τα μέτρα αυτής, εάν εξεύρης; ή τις ήπλωσε στάθμην επ' αυτήν;
Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it?
6 Επί τίνος είναι εστηριγμένα τα θεμέλια αυτής; ή τις έθεσε τον ακρογωνιαίον λίθον αυτής,
What were its foundations fastened on? Or who laid its cornerstone,
7 ότε τα άστρα της αυγής έψαλλον ομού και πάντες οι υιοί του Θεού ηλάλαζον;
when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8 ή τις συνέκλεισε την θάλασσαν με θύρας, ότε εξορμώσα εξήλθεν εκ μήτρας;
“Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb,
9 ότε περιέβαλον αυτήν με νεφέλην και με ομίχλην εσπαργάνωσα αυτήν,
when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,
10 και περιώρισα αυτήν διά προστάγματός μου, και έβαλον μοχλούς και πύλας,
marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,
11 και είπα, Έως αυτού θέλεις έρχεσθαι και δεν θέλεις υπερβή· και εδώ θέλει συντρίβεσθαι η υπερηφανία των κυμάτων σου;
and said, ‘You may come here, but no further. Your proud waves shall be stopped here’?
12 Προσέταξας συ την πρωΐαν επί των ημερών σου; έδειξας εις την αυγήν τον τόπον αυτής,
“Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place,
13 διά να πιάση τα έσχατα της γης, ώστε οι κακούργοι να εκτιναχθώσιν απ' αυτής;
that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and shake the wicked out of it?
14 Αυτή μεταμορφούται ως πηλός σφραγιζόμενος· και τα πάντα παρουσιάζονται ως στολή.
It is changed as clay under the seal, and presented as a garment.
15 Και το φως των ασεβών αφαιρείται απ' αυτών, ο δε βραχίων των υπερηφάνων συντρίβεται.
From the wicked, their light is withheld. The high arm is broken.
16 Εισήλθες έως των πηγών της θαλάσσης; ή περιεπάτησας εις εξιχνίασιν της αβύσσου;
“Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?
17 Ηνοίχθησαν εις σε του θανάτου αι πύλαι; ή είδες τας θύρας της σκιάς του θανάτου;
Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
18 Εγνώρισας το πλάτος της γης; απάγγειλον, εάν ενόησας πάντα ταύτα.
Have you comprehended the earth in its width? Declare, if you know it all.
19 Που είναι η οδός της κατοικίας του φωτός; και του σκότους, που είναι ο τόπος αυτού,
“What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place,
20 διά να συλλάβης αυτό εις το όριον αυτού και να γνωρίσης τας τρίβους της οικίας αυτού;
that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house?
21 Γνωρίζεις αυτό, διότι τότε εγεννήθης; ή διότι ο αριθμός των ημερών σου είναι πολύς;
Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!
22 Εισήλθες εις τους θησαυρούς της χιόνος; ή είδες τους θησαυρούς της χαλάζης,
Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,
23 τους οποίους φυλάττω διά τον καιρόν της θλίψεως διά την ημέραν της μάχης και του πολέμου;
which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
24 Διά τίνος οδού διαδίδεται το φως, ή ο ανατολικός άνεμος διαχέεται επί την γην;
By what way is the lightning distributed, or the east wind scattered on the earth?
25 Τις ήνοιξε ρύακας διά τας ραγδαίας βροχάς, ή δρόμον διά την αστραπήν της βροντής,
Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm,
26 διά να φέρη βροχήν επί γην ακατοίκητον, εις έρημον, όπου άνθρωπος δεν υπάρχει,
to cause it to rain on a land where there is no man, on the wilderness, in which there is no man,
27 διά να χορτάση την άβατον και ακατοίκητον, και να αναβλαστήση τον βλαστόν της χλόης;
to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, to cause the tender grass to grow?
28 Έχει πατέρα η βροχή; ή τις εγέννησε τας σταγόνας της δρόσου;
Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew?
29 Από μήτρας τίνος εξέρχεται ο πάγος; και την πάχνην του ουρανού, τις εγέννησε;
Whose womb did the ice come out of? Who has given birth to the gray frost of the sky?
30 Τα ύδατα σκληρύνονται ως λίθος, και το πρόσωπον της αβύσσου πηγνύεται.
The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen.
31 Δύνασαι να δεσμεύσης τας γλυκείας επιρροάς της Πλειάδος ή να λύσης τα δεσμά τον Ωρίωνος;
“Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?
32 Δύνασαι να εκβάλης τα Ζώδια εις τον καιρόν αυτών; ή δύνασαι να οδηγήσης τον Αρκτούρον μετά των υιών αυτού;
Can you lead the constellations out in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs?
33 Γνωρίζεις τους νόμους του ουρανού; δύνασαι να διατάξης τας επιρροάς αυτού επί την γην;
Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth?
34 Δύνασαι να υψώσης την φωνήν σου εις τα νέφη, διά να σε σκεπάση αφθονία υδάτων;
“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you?
35 Δύνασαι να αποστείλης αστραπάς, ώστε να εξέλθωσι και να είπωσι προς σε, Ιδού, ημείς;
Can you send out lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
36 Τις έβαλε σοφίαν εντός του ανθρώπου; ή τις έδωκε σύνεσιν εις την καρδίαν αυτού;
Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?
37 Τις δύναται να αριθμήση τα νέφη διά σοφίας; ή τις δύναται να κενόνη τα δοχεία του ουρανού,
Who can count the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the containers of the sky,
38 διά να χωνευθή το χώμα εις σύμπηξιν και οι βώλοι να συγκολλώνται;
when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together?
39 Θέλεις κυνηγήσει θήραμα διά τον λέοντα; ή χορτάσει την όρεξιν των σκύμνων,
“Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
40 όταν κοίτωνται εν τοις σπηλαίοις και κάθηνται εις τους κρυπτήρας διά να ενεδρεύωσι;
when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket?
41 Τις ετοιμάζει εις τον κόρακα την τροφήν αυτού, όταν οι νεοσσοί αυτού κράζωσι προς τον Θεόν, περιπλανώμενοι δι' έλλειψιν τροφής;
Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?
