1 εστιν δε πιστισ ελπιζομενων υποστασισ πραγματων ελεγχοσ ου βλεπομενων
Is now faith of [things] hoped for [the] assurance, of things [the] conviction not being seen.
2 εν ταυτη γαρ εμαρτυρηθησαν οι πρεσβυτεροι
In this for were commended the ancients.
3 πιστει νοουμεν κατηρτισθαι τουσ αιωνασ ρηματι θεου εισ το μη εκ φαινομενων τα βλεπομενα γεγονεναι (aiōn g165)
By faith we understand to have been formed the ages by declaration of God so that which not out of [things] being visible (the [thing] being seen *N+kO) becoming. (aiōn g165)
4 πιστει πλειονα θυσιαν αβελ παρα καιν προσηνεγκεν τω θεω δι ησ εμαρτυρηθη ειναι δικαιοσ μαρτυρουντοσ επι τοισ δωροισ αυτου του θεου και δι αυτησ αποθανων ετι λαλειται
By faith a more excellent sacrifice Abel than Cain offered to God, through which he was testified to be righteous bearing witness to the gifts of him (God; *NK+o) and through it having died still (he speaks. *N+kO)
5 πιστει ενωχ μετετεθη του μη ιδειν θανατον και ουχ ευρισκετο διοτι μετεθηκεν αυτον ο θεοσ προ γαρ τησ μεταθεσεωσ αυτου μεμαρτυρηται ευηρεστηκεναι τω θεω
By faith Enoch was translated not to see death and not was he found because took up him God; Before for the translation (of him *k) he has been commended to have pleased God;
6 χωρισ δε πιστεωσ αδυνατον ευαρεστησαι πιστευσαι γαρ δει τον προσερχομενον τω θεω οτι εστιν και τοισ εκζητουσιν αυτον μισθαποδοτησ γινεται
Without now faith [it is] impossible to please [Him]; To believe for it behooves the one drawing near to God that He exists and [that] to those earnestly seeking out Him a rewarder He becomes.
7 πιστει χρηματισθεισ νωε περι των μηδεπω βλεπομενων ευλαβηθεισ κατεσκευασεν κιβωτον εισ σωτηριαν του οικου αυτου δι ησ κατεκρινεν τον κοσμον και τησ κατα πιστιν δικαιοσυνησ εγενετο κληρονομοσ
By faith having been divinely instructed Noah concerning the [things] not yet seen having been moved with fear he prepared an ark for [the] salvation of the household of him, through which he condemned the world and of the according to faith righteousness [that is] he became heir.
8 πιστει καλουμενοσ αβρααμ υπηκουσεν εξελθειν εισ τον τοπον ον ημελλεν λαμβανειν εισ κληρονομιαν και εξηλθεν μη επισταμενοσ που ερχεται
By faith (the [one] *o) being called Abraham obeyed to go out into a place that he was going to receive for an inheritance and went out not knowing where he is going.
9 πιστει παρωκησεν εισ γην τησ επαγγελιασ ωσ αλλοτριαν εν σκηναισ κατοικησασ μετα ισαακ και ιακωβ των συγκληρονομων τησ επαγγελιασ τησ αυτησ
By faith he sojourned in (the *k) land of the promise as [in] a foreign [country] in tents having dwelt with Isaac and Jacob the joint-heirs of the promise same;
10 εξεδεχετο γαρ την τουσ θεμελιουσ εχουσαν πολιν ησ τεχνιτησ και δημιουργοσ ο θεοσ
He was awaiting for the foundations having city of which [the] architect and builder [is] God.
11 πιστει και αυτη σαρρα δυναμιν εισ καταβολην σπερματοσ ελαβεν και παρα καιρον ηλικιασ ετεκεν επει πιστον ηγησατο τον επαγγειλαμενον
By faith also herself Sarah ([being] barren *N) power for [the] conception of seed received even beyond [the] opportune age (she brought forth *K) since faithful she considered the [One] having promised.
12 διο και αφ ενοσ εγεννηθησαν και ταυτα νενεκρωμενου καθωσ τα αστρα του ουρανου τω πληθει και ωσ η αμμοσ η παρα το χειλοσ τησ θαλασσησ η αναριθμητοσ
Therefore also from one man were born, and he as good as dead, even as the stars of heaven in multitude and (as *N+kO) the sand by the shore of the sea countless.
13 κατα πιστιν απεθανον ουτοι παντεσ μη λαβοντεσ τασ επαγγελιασ αλλα πορρωθεν αυτασ ιδοντεσ και ασπασαμενοι και ομολογησαντεσ οτι ξενοι και παρεπιδημοι εισιν επι τησ γησ
In faith died these all not (having received *NK+O) the promises but from afar them having seen and (having been persuaded and *K) having embraced [them] and having confessed that strangers and sojourners they are on the earth.
14 οι γαρ τοιαυτα λεγοντεσ εμφανιζουσιν οτι πατριδα επιζητουσιν
Those for such things saying make manifest that their country they are seeking.
15 και ει μεν εκεινησ εμνημονευον αφ ησ εξηλθον ειχον αν καιρον ανακαμψαι
And if indeed that [one] (they were remembering *NK+o) from where (they came out, *N+kO) they had then would opportunity to return;
16 νυν δε κρειττονοσ ορεγονται τουτ εστιν επουρανιου διο ουκ επαισχυνεται αυτουσ ο θεοσ θεοσ επικαλεισθαι αυτων ητοιμασεν γαρ αυτοισ πολιν
(now *N+kO) however to a better [one] they stretch forward to, That is to a heavenly [one]; Therefore not is ashamed of them God God to be called of them; He has prepared indeed for them a city.
17 πιστει προσενηνοχεν αβρααμ τον ισαακ πειραζομενοσ και τον μονογενη προσεφερεν ο τασ επαγγελιασ αναδεξαμενοσ
By faith has offered up Abraham Isaac Being tested, even [his] only begotten [son] was offering up the [one] the promises having received,
18 προσ ον ελαληθη οτι εν ισαακ κληθησεται σοι σπερμα
as to whom it was said that In Isaac will be reckoned your offspring;
19 λογισαμενοσ οτι και εκ νεκρων εγειρειν δυνατοσ ο θεοσ οθεν αυτον και εν παραβολη εκομισατο
having reasoned that even out from [the] dead to raise able [was] God, from where him also in a simile he received.
20 πιστει περι μελλοντων ευλογησεν ισαακ τον ιακωβ και τον ησαυ
By faith (also *no) concerning [the things] coming blessed Isaac Jacob and Esau.
21 πιστει ιακωβ αποθνησκων εκαστον των υιων ιωσηφ ευλογησεν και προσεκυνησεν επι το ακρον τησ ραβδου αυτου
By faith Jacob dying each of the sons of Joseph blessed and worshiped on the top of the staff of him.
22 πιστει ιωσηφ τελευτων περι τησ εξοδου των υιων ισραηλ εμνημονευσεν και περι των οστεων αυτου ενετειλατο
By faith Joseph dying concerning the exodus of the sons of Israel made mention and concerning the bones of him gave instructions.
23 πιστει μωυσησ γεννηθεισ εκρυβη τριμηνον υπο των πατερων αυτου διοτι ειδον αστειον το παιδιον και ουκ εφοβηθησαν το διαταγμα του βασιλεωσ
By faith Moses having been born he was hidden three months by the parents of him because they saw [was] beautiful the little child and not they did fear the edict of the king.
24 πιστει μωυσησ μεγασ γενομενοσ ηρνησατο λεγεσθαι υιοσ θυγατροσ φαραω
By faith Moses grown having become he refused to be named [the] son of [the] daughter of Pharaoh,
25 μαλλον ελομενοσ συγκακουχεισθαι τω λαω του θεου η προσκαιρον εχειν αμαρτιασ απολαυσιν
rather having chosen to suffer affliction with the people of God than [the] temporary to have of sin enjoyment;
26 μειζονα πλουτον ηγησαμενοσ των αιγυπτου θησαυρων τον ονειδισμον του χριστου απεβλεπεν γαρ εισ την μισθαποδοσιαν
greater wealth having esteemed than that (in *k) (Egypt *N+kO) treasures the reproach of Christ; he was looking for toward the reward.
27 πιστει κατελιπεν αιγυπτον μη φοβηθεισ τον θυμον του βασιλεωσ τον γαρ αορατον ωσ ορων εκαρτερησεν
By faith he left Egypt not having feared the anger of the king; the for Invisible [One] as seeing he persevered.
28 πιστει πεποιηκεν το πασχα και την προσχυσιν του αιματοσ ινα μη ο ολοθρευων τα πρωτοτοκα θιγη αυτων
By faith he has kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that not the [one] destroying the firstborn may touch them.
29 πιστει διεβησαν την ερυθραν θαλασσαν ωσ δια ξηρασ ησ πειραν λαβοντεσ οι αιγυπτιοι κατεποθησαν
By faith they passed through the Red Sea as through dry (land, *no) which an attempt having made the Egyptians were swallowed up.
30 πιστει τα τειχη ιεριχω επεσεν κυκλωθεντα επι επτα ημερασ
By faith the walls of Jericho (fell *N+kO) having been encircled for seven days.
31 πιστει ρααβ η πορνη ου συναπωλετο τοισ απειθησασιν δεξαμενη τουσ κατασκοπουσ μετ ειρηνησ
By faith Rahab the prostitute not did perish with those having disobeyed having received the spies with peace.
32 και τι ετι λεγω επιλειψει γαρ με διηγουμενον ο χρονοσ περι γεδεων βαρακ τε και σαμψων και ιεφθαε δαυιδ τε και σαμουηλ και των προφητων
And what more shall I say? Will fail me for telling the time of Gideon, Barak, (both and *k) Samson, (and *k) Jephthah, David also and Samuel and the prophets;
33 οι δια πιστεωσ κατηγωνισαντο βασιλειασ ειργασαντο δικαιοσυνην επετυχον επαγγελιων εφραξαν στοματα λεοντων
who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut [the] mouths of lions,
34 εσβεσαν δυναμιν πυροσ εφυγον στοματα μαχαιρασ ενεδυναμωθησαν απο ασθενειασ εγενηθησαν ισχυροι εν πολεμω παρεμβολασ εκλιναν αλλοτριων
quenched [the] power of fire, escaped [the] blades of [the] sword, (be empowered *N+kO) out of weakness, became mighty in war, [the] armies put to flight of foreigners.
35 ελαβον γυναικεσ εξ αναστασεωσ τουσ νεκρουσ αυτων αλλοι δε ετυμπανισθησαν ου προσδεξαμενοι την απολυτρωσιν ινα κρειττονοσ αναστασεωσ τυχωσιν
Received back women by resurrection the dead of them; others then were tortured not having accepted release, so that a better resurrection they may obtain;
36 ετεροι δε εμπαιγμων και μαστιγων πειραν ελαβον ετι δε δεσμων και φυλακησ
Others then of mockings and of scourgings trial received, in addition also of chains and imprisonment;
37 ελιθασθησαν επρισθησαν επειρασθησαν εν φονω μαχαιρασ απεθανον περιηλθον εν μηλωταισ εν αιγειοισ δερμασιν υστερουμενοι θλιβομενοι κακουχουμενοι
They were stoned, they were sawed in two (tested *KO) by slaughter of [the] sword they were killed; they wandered in sheepskins, in goats’ skins, being destitute, being oppressed, being mistreated,
38 ων ουκ ην αξιοσ ο κοσμοσ εν ερημιαισ πλανωμενοι και ορεσιν και σπηλαιοισ και ταισ οπαισ τησ γησ
of whom not was worthy the world; (in *N+kO) deserts wandering and in mountains and in caves and in the holes of the earth.
39 και ουτοι παντεσ μαρτυρηθεντεσ δια τησ πιστεωσ ουκ εκομισαντο την επαγγελιαν
And these all having been commended through the faith not did receive the promise
40 του θεου περι ημων κρειττον τι προβλεψαμενου ινα μη χωρισ ημων τελειωθωσιν
God for us better something having planned, so that not apart from us they may be made perfect.
