Job 29
1 Darauf fuhr Hiob also fort, seine Rede vorzutragen:
Job also added to this, using figures of speech, and he said:
2 O daß ich wäre wie in früheren Monden, wie in den Tagen da mich Gott beschützte;
Who will grant to me that I might be as I was in former months, according to the days when God kept watch over me?
3 als seine Leuchte über meinem Haupte schien, und ich bei seinem Licht durch Dunkel wandelte,
At that time, his lamp shined over my head, and by his light, I walked through the darkness.
4 so, wie ich war in meines Sommers Tagen, als Gottes Freundschaft über meinem Zelte waltete,
I was then just as in the days of my youth, when God was privately in my tabernacle.
5 als der Allmächtige noch mit mir war, rings um mich meine Knaben;
At that time, the Almighty was with me and my children surrounded me.
6 als ich meine Schritte in Dickmilch badete, und der Fels neben mir Bäche Öls ergoß;
Then, I washed my feet with butter, and a boulder poured out rivers of oil for me.
7 als ich zum Thore ging hinauf zur Stadt, auf dem freien Platze meinen Sitz aufschlug.
When I went to the gate of the city, or to the main street, they prepared a chair for me.
8 Wenn mich die Knaben sahen, verbargen sie sich, und die Greise erhoben sich und blieben stehn;
The youths saw me and hid themselves, and the elders, rising up, remained standing.
9 Häuptlinge hielten inne mit Reden und legten die Hand auf ihren Mund.
The leaders stopped talking, and they placed a finder over their mouth.
10 Der Edlen Stimme verbarg sich, und ihre Zunge klebte an ihrem Gaumen.
The commanders subdued their voice, and their tongue adhered to their throat.
11 Denn wo ein Ohr nur hörte, da pries es mich selig, und wo ein Auge sah, da gab es mir Zeugnis.
The ear that heard me, blessed me, and the eye that saw me, gave testimony for me.
12 Denn ich rettete den Elenden, der um Hilfe schrie, und die Waise und den, der keinen Helfer hatte.
This was because I had freed the poor, who cried out, and the orphan, who had no helper.
13 Der Segen des Verlorenen kam über mich, und das Herz der Witwe macht ich jubeln.
The blessing of him who would have been destroyed came upon me, and I consoled the heart of the widow.
14 Gerechtigkeit zog ich an, und sie zog mich an, wie Talar und Turban zog ich an meine Rechtschaffenheit.
I put on justice, and I clothed myself with my judgment, like a robe and a diadem.
15 Auge ward ich dem Blinden und Fuß war ich dem Lahmen.
I was an eye for the blind and a foot for the lame.
16 Ein Vater war ich den Armen und die Rechtssache des mir Unbekannten untersuchte ich;
I was the father of the poor; and if I lacked knowledge about any case, I investigated very diligently.
17 ich zerschmetterte dem Frevler die Kinnladen und warf ihm die Beute aus den Zähnen.
I crushed the jaws of the impious, and I took away prey from his teeth.
18 So dachte ich denn: “Bei meinem Neste werde ich verscheiden und wie der Phönix meine Tage mehren.
And I said, “I will die in my little nest, and like a palm tree, I will multiply my days.
19 Meine Wurzel steht über dem Wasser offen, und der Tau übernachtet in meinen Zweigen.
My root has been spread beside the waters, and the dew will remain with my harvest.
20 Meine Würde ist stets neu bei mir, und mein Bogen verjüngt sich in meiner Hand.”
My glory will always be restored, and my bow will be restored to my hand.”
21 Mir hörten sie zu und warteten und lauschten schweigend meinem Rate.
Those who heard me, expected vindication, and they listened closely in silence to my counsel.
22 Wenn ich geredet, sprachen sie nicht mehr, und meine Rede troff auf sie herab.
To my words, they dared to add nothing, and my eloquence poured over them.
23 So warteten sie auf mich wie auf Regen und wie nach Spätregen sperrten sie den Mund auf.
They waited for me as for rain, and they opened their mouth as for belated rains.
24 Ich lächelte ihnen zu, wenn sie verzagten, und das heitre Antlitz trübten sie mir nie.
If I had ever laughed at them, they would not have believed it, and the light of my face was not cast down towards the ground.
25 Gern wählte ich den Weg zu ihnen, saß da als Haupt und thronte wie ein König in der Heerschar, wie einer, der Trauernde tröstet.
If I wished to go to them, I sat down first, and, though I sat like a king surrounded by an army, yet I was a comforter to those who mourned.
