Prediger 6
1 Es giebt ein Übel, das ich gesehen unter der Sonne, das lastet schwer auf dem Menschen:
There is also another evil, which I have seen under the sun, and that frequent among men:
2 wenn Gott einem Reichtum und Schätze und Ehre giebt, so daß er für sich nichts entbehrt von allem, was er begehrt, Gott aber ihm nicht Macht giebt, davon zu genießen, sondern ein fremder Mann genießt es - das ist eitel und ein schlimmes Leiden.
A man to whom God hath given riches, and substance, and honour, and his soul wanteth nothing of all that he desireth: yet God doth not give him power to eat thereof, but a stranger shall eat it up. This is vanity and a great misery.
3 Wenn einer hundert Kinder zeugte und viele Jahre lebte und seiner Lebenstage viele wären, er sich aber nicht an dem Guten sättigte, und ihm auch kein Begräbnis zu teil würde, so sage ich: glücklicher als er ist die Fehlgeburt.
If a man beget a hundred children, and live many years, and attain to a great age, and his soul make no use of the goods of his substance, and he be without burial: of this man I pronounce, that the untimely born is better than he.
4 Denn in Nichtigkeit ist diese gekommen und in Finsternis geht sie dahin, und mit Finsternis ist ihr Name bedeckt;
For he came in vain, and goeth to darkness, and his name shall be wholly forgotten.
5 auch hat sie die Sonne nicht gesehen, noch kennen gelernt: ihr ist wohler, als jenem.
He hath not seen the sun, nor known the distance of good and evil:
6 Und wenn er tausend Jahre zweimal durchlebt, aber kein Gutes genossen hätte: fährt nicht alles an einen Ort?
Although he lived two thousand years, and hath not enjoyed good things: do not all make haste to one place?
7 Alle Arbeit des Menschen geschieht für seinen Mund; gleichwohl wird die Begier nie gestillt.
All the labour of man is for his mouth, but his soul shall not be filled.
8 Denn welchen Vorzug hat der Weise vor dem Thoren? welchen der Arme, der vor den Lebenden zu wandeln versteht?
What hath the wise man more than the fool? and what the poor man, but to go thither, where there is life?
9 Besser ist das Sehen mit Augen als das Schweifen der Begier. Auch das ist eitel und Streben nach Wind.
Better it is to see what thou mayst desire, than to desire that which thou canst not know. But this also is vanity, and presumption of spirit.
10 Was da geschieht, längst ist es benannt, und es ist bestimmt, was ein Mensch sein wird, und er kann nicht rechten mit dem, der stärker ist als er.
He that shall be, his name is already called: and it is known, that he is man, and cannot contend in judgment with him that is stronger than himself.
11 Giebt es gleich viel Worte, welche die Eitelkeit mehren, - welchen Vorteil hat der Mensch?
There are many words that have much vanity in disputing.
12 Denn wer weiß, was dem Menschen gut ist im Leben, alle die Tage seines eitlen Lebens hindurch, die er zubringt wie ein Schatten? Denn wer verrät dem Menschen, was nach ihm sein wird unter der Sonne?
What needeth a man to seek things that are above him, whereas he knoweth not what is profitable for him in his life, in all the days of his pilgrimage, and the time that passeth like a shadow? Or who can tell him what shall be after him under the sun?
