1 Den Eigenwillen sucht, wer sich absondert; bei jeglicher Gelegenheit beginnt er Streit.
A man seeketh, for satisfaction, going his own way, through all safe counsel, he breaketh.
2 Der Tor hat kein Gefallen an Belehrung; er möchte nur die eigene Meinung künden.
A dullard, delighteth not, in understanding, in nothing save the exposing of his own heart.
3 Wo Frevel auftritt, dort tritt auch Verachtung auf, und Schmähung ist mit Hohn vereint.
When the lawless man cometh in, then cometh also contempt, and, with shame, reproach.
4 Aus eines Mannes Munde tiefe Worte sind Gewässer, ein Strom, der aus dem Born der Weisheit sprudelt.
Deep waters, are the words of a man’s mouth, —a bubbling brook, the well-spring of wisdom.
5 Daß man Partei für einen Frevler nimmt, daß man das Recht des Frommen beugt, nützt nichts.
To prefer a lawless man, is not good, thrusting away the righteous, in judgment.
6 Des Toren Lippen schaffen Streit; nach Schlägen ruft sein Mund.
the lips of a dullard, enter into contention, and his mouth, for blows, crieth out.
7 Des Toren Mund führt seinen Sturz herbei, und seine Lippen sind ein Strick für seinen Hals.
The mouth of a dullard, is his ruin, and, his lips, are a snare to his soul.
8 Des Ohrenbläsers Worte sind wie Hammerschläge; sie dringen tief ins Herz hinein.
the words of a tattler, are dainties, they, therefore go down into the chambers of the inner man.
9 Wer lässig bei der Arbeit ist und wer den eigenen Besitz zerstört, sind Brüder.
Surely he that is slothful in his work, brother, is he to a master at laying waste.
10 Ein fester Turm des Herren Name; der Fromme läuft zu ihm und ist gesichert.
A tower of strength, is the Name of Yahweh, thereinto, runneth the righteous, and is safe.
11 Des Reichen Habe ist ihm eine feste Stadt, wie eine hohe Mauer um ihn her.
The substance of a rich man, is his strong city, and like a high wall, in his imagination.
12 Stolz geht dem Sturz voran, der Ehre Demut.
Before grievous injury, a man’s heart is haughty, and, before honour, is humility.
13 Gibt jemand Antwort schon, bevor er recht verstanden, so rechnet man es ihm als Torheit und als Schande.
He that answereth before he heareth, a folly, it is to him, and, a reproach.
14 Ein männliches Gemüt kann seine Leiden meistern. Ein düsteres Gemüt, wer mag's erträglich finden?
The spirit of a man, sustaineth his sickness, but, a dejected spirit, who can bear it?
15 Des Klugen Herz erwirbt sich Einsicht; Einsicht sucht auch des Weisen Ohr.
the heart of the intelligent, acquireth knowledge, yea, the ear of the wise, seeketh knowledge.
16 Geschenke schaffen ihrem Geber Raum und öffnen ihm den Zutritt zu den Großen.
The gift of a man, maketh room for him, and, before great men, setteth him down.
17 In einem Streite hat der erste Recht; da kommt der andere und untersucht's aufs neue.
Righteous is he that is first in his own cause, then cometh his neighbour, and thoroughly searcheth him.
18 Den Streitigkeiten macht das Los ein Ende; es trennt die Streitenden.
The lot causeth, contentions, to cease, and, the mighty, it parteth.
19 Ein Bruder kann an einer Festung sich vergehen, sind Streitigkeiten doch, was eine Bresche für die Burg.
A brother estranged, [is worse] than a strong city, —and, contentions, are as the bar of a citadel.
20 Mit seines Mundes Frucht ersättigt jeder seinen Magen, von seiner Lippen Ernte kann er satt sich essen.
Of the fruit of a man’s mouth, shall his inmost mind be satisfied, with the product of his lips, shall he be satisfied.
21 In dem Bereich der Zunge liegen Tod und Leben, und wer sie gern gebraucht, genießt auch ihre Frucht.
Death and life, are in the power of the tongue, and, its friends, shall eat its fruits.
22 Wer je das Weib erforscht, hat einen guten Fund getan, und er erfreut sich der besonderen Huld des Herrn.
Who hath found a wife, hath found a blessing, and hath obtained favour from Yahweh.
23 Der Arme redet weinerlich; der Reiche aber spricht mit Nachdruck.
Supplications, doth the poor man utter, but, the rich, answereth fiercely.
24 Gefährten gibt's, die gegenseitig sich zugrunde richten; und Freunde gibt's, anhänglicher als Brüder.
A man having [many] friends, shall come to ruin, but there is a loving one, who sticketh closer than a brother.
