Proverbes 17
1 Mieux vaut un morceau de pain sec avec la paix, qu'une maison dans laquelle se multiplient les festins où l'on se querelle.
Better [is] a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices [with] strife.
2 Le sage serviteur commande au fils qui fait honte, et avec les frères il partagera l'héritage.
A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
3 Le creuset est pour l'argent, et la fournaise pour l'or; mais c'est l'Éternel qui éprouve les cœurs.
The fining pot [is] for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.
4 Le méchant est attentif aux discours nuisibles, le menteur prête l'oreille aux paroles funestes.
A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; [and] a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.
5 Qui se moque du pauvre, outrage son créateur; qui jouit du malheur, ne reste pas impuni.
Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: [and] he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.
6 Les enfants de leurs enfants sont la couronne des vieillards et la gloire des enfants, ce sont leurs pères.
Children’s children [are] the crown of old men; and the glory of children [are] their fathers.
7 Le langage digne ne sied pas à l'insensé; combien moins à l'homme bien né le langage du mensonge!
Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
8 Le don est une pierre de prix aux yeux de qui le reçoit; partout où il s'adresse, il réussit.
A gift [is as] a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
9 Qui tait la faute, cherche l'affection; mais qui la reproduit par la parole, désunit des intimes.
He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth [very] friends.
10 Le blâme frappe plus l'homme de sens, que cent coups, l'insensé.
A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
11 La révolte ne cherche que le mal, mais un cruel messager lui est député.
An evil [man] seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
12 Soyez rencontrés par une ourse qui a perdu ses petits, mais non par un insensé pendant sa démence!
Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
13 De quiconque rend le mal pour le bien, les maux ne quittent point la demeure.
Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
14 Commencer une querelle, c'est rompre une digue; cède avant que le débat s'échauffe.
The beginning of strife [is as] when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.
15 Qui absout le coupable, et qui condamne l'innocent, sont l'un autant que l'autre l'abomination de l'Éternel.
He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both [are] abomination to the LORD.
16 A quoi sert à l'insensé d'avoir en main des richesses? A acheter la sagesse? Il manque de sens.
Wherefore [is there] a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing [he hath] no heart [to it]?
17 L'ami aime dans tous les temps; mais dans le malheur il devient un frère.
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
18 L'homme privé de sens touche dans la main, et se lie comme caution envers autrui.
A man void of understanding striketh hands, [and] becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
19 Celui-là aime à pécher qui aime à se quereller; et qui élève trop sa porte, cherche sa chute.
He loveth transgression that loveth strife: [and] he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
20 Avec un cœur tortueux on ne trouve pas le bonheur; et avec une langue perverse on tombe dans le malheur.
He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
21 Qui donne le jour à un fou, en aura du chagrin; et point de joie pour le père de l'insensé.
He that begetteth a fool [doeth it] to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
22 Un cœur joyeux est un bon remède; mais un esprit abattu dessèche les os.
A merry heart doeth good [like] a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
23 L'impie accepte le présent caché sous le manteau, pour détourner le cours de la justice.
A wicked [man] taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.
24 La sagesse est à la portée du sage; mais les yeux de l'insensé cherchent au bout de la terre.
Wisdom [is] before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool [are] in the ends of the earth.
25 Le fils insensé est un chagrin pour son père, et une amertume pour celle qui lui donna naissance.
A foolish son [is] a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.
26 Condamner le juste, même à une amende, est mauvais; mais frapper l'homme bien né passe les bornes du droit.
Also to punish the just [is] not good, [nor] to strike princes for equity.
27 Qui épargne ses paroles, possède la science, et qui a du sang-froid est homme de sens.
He that hath knowledge spareth his words: [and] a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
28 Même l'insensé, quand il se tait, passe pour sage; celui qui tient fermées ses lèvres, a du sens.
Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: [and] he that shutteth his lips [is esteemed] a man of understanding.
