1 Et l'Éternel parla à Moïse en ces termes:
Yahweh said to Moses/me,
2 Ordonne aux enfants d'Israël qu'ils aient à expulser du camp quiconque aura la lèpre ou un écoulement, et quiconque sera souillé par le contact d'un mort;
“Tell this to the Israeli people: ‘You must send away from your (camp/area where you have your tents) any man or woman who has leprosy and anyone who has a discharge [of some fluid from his body], and anyone who has become unacceptable to God because of [having touched] a corpse.
3 homme ou femme, vous l'expulserez et le reléguerez au dehors du camp, afin qu'il ne souille pas leurs campements au milieu desquels je réside.
Send them away from there in order that they will not [touch people in the camp area] where I live among you and cause them to become unacceptable to me.’”
4 Et ainsi firent les enfants d'Israël; ils les reléguèrent au dehors du camp; les enfants d'Israël se conformèrent à ce que l'Éternel avait dit à Moïse.
So [Moses/I told that to the Israeli people, and] the Israeli people obeyed what Yahweh commanded Moses/me.
5 Et l'Éternel parla à Moïse en ces termes:
Yahweh also told Moses/me,
6 Dis aux enfants d'Israël: Si un homme ou une femme commettent l'un quelconque des péchés des hommes entre eux, faisant ainsi infidélité à l'Éternel, et que par là cette personne tombe en état de délit,
“Tell this to the Israeli people: ‘If someone (commits a crime against/does something wrong to) another person, [I consider that] that person has done wrong to me.
7 ils confesseront le péché commis par eux et restitueront l'objet du délit, le principal avec un cinquième en sus, qui sera remis à celui envers lequel ils sont coupables.
That person must confess that he or she is guilty, and he or she must pay to the person to whom wrong was done [what others consider to be a suitable/proper payment] for what he has done, and he must pay an extra 20 percent.
8 Et si celui-ci n'a point de proche parent auquel l'indemnité puisse être payée, l'indemnité payée revient à l'Éternel, au Prêtre, indépendamment du bélier expiatoire avec lequel on fait la propitiation pour eux.
If the person against whom the wrong was done [has died and] there is no relative to whom the money can be paid, then the money belongs to me, and it must be paid to the priest. In addition, the one who did the wrong must give a male sheep to the priest [to sacrifice] in order that (that person’s sin may be forgiven/I can forgive that person for his sin).
9 De même tout don de toutes les choses consacrées par les enfants d'Israël, qui seront offertes au Prêtre, lui appartiendra.
All the sacred offerings that the Israelis bring to the priest belong to the priest.
10 Ce que chacun aura consacré, lui appartiendra. Ce que chacun aura donné au Prêtre lui appartiendra.
The priest can keep those gifts.’”
11 Et l'Éternel parla à Moïse en ces termes:
Yahweh also said this to Moses/me:
12 Parle aux enfants d'Israël et leur dis: Si la femme d'un homme dévie et lui fait infidélité,
“Tell this to the Israeli people: ‘Suppose a man thinks that his wife has slept with another man,
13 et qu'un autre ait eu avec elle un commerce charnel, et cela à l'insu du mari en cachette duquel elle se sera souillée, sans qu'il y ait de témoin à sa charge et sans qu'elle ait été prise sur le fait;
but neither he nor anyone else knows if it is true or not, because no one saw her doing that.
14 et si le mari est saisi d'un mouvement de jalousie qui le rende jaloux de sa femme, et qu'elle se soit vraiment souillée; ou bien s'il est saisi d'un mouvement de jalousie qui le rende jaloux de sa femme, et qu'elle ne se soit point souillée;
But if the woman’s husband is jealous, and if he suspects that she has committed adultery, and he wants to know whether that is true or not,
15 le mari amènera sa femme au Prêtre, apportant l'oblation de celle-ci pour elle, un dixième d'épha de farine d'orge; il n'y versera point d'huile, et n'y ajoutera point d'encens, car c'est une offrande de jalousie, une offrande commémorative, appelant le souvenir du crime.
he should take his wife to the priest. He must take along as an offering two quarts/liters of barley flour. The priest must not pour [olive] oil or incense on it, because this is an offering that the man has brought because he (is jealous/wants his wife to sleep only with him). It is an offering to find out if she is guilty or not. [Neither olive oil nor incense should be used because are associated with joy and this is not a time for joy.]
16 Puis le Prêtre la fera approcher et la mettra en la présence de l'Éternel.
The priest must tell the woman to stand [in front of the altar] in my presence.
17 Et le Prêtre prendra de l'eau sacrée dans un vase de terre, et le Prêtre prendra de la poussière qui sera sur le sol de la Résidence, et il la jettera dans cette eau.
He must put some sacred water in a clay jar, and then he must put some dirt from the floor of the Sacred Tent into the water.
18 Et le Prêtre mettra la femme en la présence de l'Éternel, et découvrira la tête de la femme, et lui placera dans les mains l'offrande commémorative, l'offrande de jalousie; et dans la main du Prêtre restera l'eau des amertumes, qui appelle la malédiction.
He must untie/unfasten the woman’s hair. Then he must put in her hands the grain that her jealous husband is offering to determine whether she has committed adultery or not. The priest must hold [the bowl that contains] bitter water that will cause (the woman to be cursed/bad things to happen to the woman) [if she is guilty].
19 Et le Prêtre l'adjurera et dira à la femme: Si aucun homme n'a habité avec toi, si tu ne t'es pas écartée, en te souillant, de la soumission due à ton mari, sois à l'épreuve de cette eau des amertumes qui appelle la malédiction.
The priest must require her to solemnly declare [that she will tell the truth]. Then he must say to her, “Has another man had sex [EUP] with you? Have you faithfully [slept only with your husband] or not? If you have not slept with another man, nothing bad will happen to you if you drink the water.
20 Mais si tu t'es écartée de la soumission due à ton mari et si tu t'es souillée, et si tu as reçu la cohabitation d'un homme, autre que ton mari, …
But if you have had sex with another man, [Yahweh will curse you].
21 qu'ainsi le Prêtre adjure la femme avec le serment d'imprécation, et que le Prêtre dise à la femme: Que l'Éternel te livre à la malédiction et à l'exécration au milieu de ton peuple en mettant l'amaigrissement à tes hanches et le gonflement dans ton sein,
Your womb will shrivel up and your stomach will swell up. You will never be able to give birth to children, and as a result, everyone will curse you and avoid you. If you have committed adultery, [when you drink] this water, that is what will happen to you.” Then the woman must answer, “[If I am guilty], I will not object if that happens.”
22 et que cette eau qui appelle la malédiction pénètre dans tes entrailles pour gonfler ton sein et amaigrir tes hanches. Et la femme répondra: Ainsi soit-il! Ainsi soit-il!
23 Et le Prêtre écrira ces imprécations dans un livre et les enlèvera avec l'eau des amertumes,
‘Then the priest must write [with ink] on a small scroll these (curses/bad things that will happen to her if she is guilty) [and then wash the ink off into the bitter water].
24 et il fera boire à la femme l'eau des amertumes qui appelle la malédiction, afin que cette eau des amertumes qui appelle la malédiction pénètre en elle pour lui être amère.
The priest must take from her the offering of barley flour [that she is holding], and lift it up to dedicate it to me. Then he must put it on the altar
25 Ensuite le Prêtre prendra des mains de la femme l'offrande de jalousie, et ayant agité l'offrande devant l'Éternel,
26 il l'offrira sur l'Autel. Puis le Prêtre prendra une poignée de l'offrande commémorative, et la brûlera sur l'Autel; après quoi il fera boire à la femme de cette eau.
and burn part of it as a sacrifice. Then the woman must drink the bitter water.
27 Et quand il aura fait boire à la femme de cette eau, si elle s'est souillée et a fait infidélité à son mari, l'eau qui appelle la malédiction pénétrera en elle pour lui être amère, et son sein se gonflera, et ses hanches s'amaigriront, et cette femme sera livrée à la malédiction au milieu de son peuple.
If the woman has committed adultery, the water will cause her to suffer greatly. Her stomach will swell up and her womb will shrink, [and she will be unable to give birth to children]. And then her (relatives/fellow Israelis) will curse her.
28 Mais si la femme ne s'est point souillée, et qu'elle soit pure, elle restera intacte et féconde.
But if she (is innocent/has not committed adultery), her body will not be harmed, and she will still be able to give birth to children.
29 Telle est la loi touchant la jalousie. Si une femme s'écarte de la soumission due à son mari et se souille,
‘That is the ritual that must be performed when a woman who is married has been unfaithful to her husband,
30 ou bien dans le cas où un mari serait saisi d'un mouvement de jalousie qui le rendrait jaloux de sa femme, il fera paraître la femme devant l'Éternel, et le Prêtre fera sur elle l'application de cette loi.
or when a man is jealous and suspects that his wife [has had sex with another man]. The priest must tell that woman to stand [at the altar] in my presence and obey these instructions.
31 Et le mari ne sera point pris à partie comme coupable, et la femme sera sous le poids de son crime.
Even if the woman has not done what the husband suspected, he will not be punished [MTY] for doing something wrong [by bringing his wife to the priest]. But if his wife is guilty, she will suffer as a result.’”
