Job 40

1 Et le Seigneur Dieu, continuant à parler à Job dit:

And the Lord God answered Job, and said,

2 Est-ce qu'il décline la justice du Tout-Puissant? Celui qui a adressé des reproches au Seigneur doit lui répondre.

Will [any one] pervert judgment with the Mighty One? and he that reproves God, let him return it for answer.

3 Et Job, reprenant, dit au Seigneur:

And Job answered and said to the Lord,

4 Pourquoi m'obstinerais-je à contester? Je me tiens pour averti; j'ai osé blâmer le Seigneur, et j'ai ouï de telles paroles, moi qui ne suis rien! Que pourrais-je répliquer? Je n'ai plus qu'à me mettre la main sur la bouche.

Why do I yet plead? being rebuked even while reproving the Lord: hearing such things, whereas I am nothing: and what shall I answer to these [arguments]? I will lay my hand upon my mouth.

5 J'ai parlé une fois; je me garderai bien de parler encore.

I have spoken once; but I will not do so a second time.

6 Et le Seigneur, continuant, dit à Job, à travers la nuée:

And the Lord yet again answered and spoke to Job out of the cloud, [saying],

7 Nullement, mais ceins-toi les reins comme un homme; je vais te questionner, tu me répondras.

Nay, gird up now your loins like a man; and I will ask you, and do you answer me.

8 Ne refuse pas mon jugement: crois-tu que j'aie conversé avec toi, sinon pour que tu apparaisses juste?

Do not set aside my judgment: and do you think that I have dealt with you in any other way, than that you might appear to be righteous?

9 Ton bras est-il le bras du Seigneur? ta voix est-elle comme son tonnerre?

Hast you an arm like the Lord's? or do you thunder with a voice like his?

10 Revêts-toi de grandeur et de puissance; orne-toi d'honneur et de gloire.

Assume now a lofty bearing and power; and clothe yourself with glory and honor.

11 Envoie des anges dans ta colère, humilie tout orgueilleux.

And send forth messengers with wrath; and lay low every haughty one.

12 Eteins les vaines splendeurs, fais tomber soudain l'impie en pourriture.

Bring down also the proud man; and consume at once the ungodly.

13 Cache les pécheurs ensemble sous la terre; couvre leurs fronts de honte.

And hide them together in the earth; and fill their faces with shame.

14 Je confesserai alors que ta main peut sauver.

[Then] will I confess that your right hand can save [you].

15 Mais vois auprès de toi les bêtes fauves; elles se repaissent d'herbe comme les bœufs.

But now look at the wild beasts with you; they eat grass like oxen.

16 La vigueur de la bête est dans ses reins; sa force dans ses entrailles.

Behold now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.

17 Elle dresse sa queue comme un cyprès; ses nerfs sont liés entre eux.

He sets up his tail like a cypress; and his nerves are wrapped together.

18 Ses côtes sont des côtes d'airain; son échine est de fer fondu.

His sides are sides of brass; and his backbone is [as] cast iron.

19 Elle est le commencement de l'œuvre du Seigneur, créée pour être raillée par les anges.

This is the chief of the creation of the Lord; made to be played with by his angels.

20 Lorsqu'elle a gravi sur les cimes des monts, elle a réjoui les quadrupèdes dans le Tartare.

And when he has gone up to a steep mountain, he causes joy to the quadrupeds in the deep.

21 Elle se couche sous toute sorte d'arbre; auprès du papyrus, de l'herbe ou du roseau.

He lies under trees of every kind, by the papyrus, and reed, and bulrush.

22 L'ombre des grands rameaux la couvre, ou les jeunes tiges des champs.

And the great trees make a shadow over him with their branches, and [so do] the bushes of the field.

23 Vienne le flux de la mer, elle ne le sentira pas; elle ne craint rien; le Jourdain même se briserait sur sa gueule.

If there should be a flood, he will not perceive it; he trust that Jordan will rush up into his mouth.

24 D'un coup d'œil elle réprimera son choc; pris au piège, il frémira jusqu'en ses narines.

[Yet one] shall take him in his sight; [one] shall catch [him] with a cord, and pierce his nose.
