Psaumes 78
1 Maskîl d’Assaph. Ecoute, ô mon peuple, mon enseignement, prête l’oreille aux paroles de ma bouche.
Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 J’Ouvre les lèvres pour des sentences poétiques, j’énonce des aphorismes venant des temps anciens.
I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:
3 Ce que nous connaissons pour l’avoir entendu, ce que nos pères nous ont raconté,
Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
4 nous ne le laissons pas ignorer à leurs descendants; à la génération la plus reculée nous voulons raconter les œuvres glorieuses de l’Eternel, sa puissance et les merveilles qu’il a accomplies.
We will not hide them from their children, showing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he has done.
5 Il a établi un code dans Jacob, institué une loi en Israël; et il ordonna à nos pères de les enseigner à leurs enfants,
For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:
6 pour que la génération future soit mise au courant, pour que les enfants qui viendraient à naître se lèvent et à leur tour en instruisent leurs fils.
That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:
7 Qu’ils mettent donc leur confiance en Dieu, se gardent d’oublier les hauts faits du Tout-Puissant, et observent ses prescriptions!
That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:
8 Et qu’ils ne soient pas, comme leurs ancêtres, une génération insoumise et rebelle, une génération au cœur inconstant et à l’esprit non sincèrement fidèle à Dieu.
And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not steadfast with God.
9 Les fils d’Ephraïm, armés de l’arc, habiles tireurs, ont tourné le dos au jour du combat!
The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.
10 Ils ont répudié l’alliance de Dieu et refusé de suivre sa loi.
They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;
11 Ils ont oublié ses grandes œuvres et ses merveilles, dont il les avait rendus témoins.
And forgotten about his works, and his wonders that he had showed them.
12 Sous les yeux de leurs pères il accomplit des prodiges, sur la terre d’Egypte, dans les champs de Çoân.
Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
13 Il fendit la mer pour leur ouvrir un passage, fit se dresser les ondes comme une digue.
He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.
14 Le jour, il les dirigeait au moyen de la nuée, et toute la nuit, par l’éclat du feu.
In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.
15 Il entrouvrit des roches dans le désert, et offrit à leur soif des flots abondants.
He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.
16 Il fit jaillir des torrents du granit et couler les eaux comme des fleuves.
He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.
17 Mais ils continuèrent à pécher contre lui, à s’insurger contre le Très-Haut dans ces régions arides.
And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.
18 Au fond de leur cœur, ils mirent Dieu à l’épreuve, en demandant une nourriture selon leur goût.
And they tempted God in their heart by asking food for their lust.
19 Ils tinrent des propos contre Dieu, disant:
Yea, they spoke against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?
20 "Dieu pourra-t-il dresser une table dans le désert? Sans doute il a frappé un rocher, et les eaux ont jailli, des torrents se sont précipités: pourra-t-il aussi donner du pain? Sera-t-il capable d’apprêter de la viande à son peuple?"
Behold, he stroke the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?
21 C’Est pourquoi l’Eternel, les ayant entendus, s’irrita; un feu s’alluma contre Jacob, et sa colère s’éleva contre Israël,
Therefore the LORD heard this, and was angry: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;
22 parce qu’ils n’avaient pas eu foi en Dieu, ni témoigné de leur confiance en son secours.
Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:
23 Il commanda aux nuages d’en haut, et ouvrit les portes du ciel.
Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,
24 Il fit pleuvoir sur eux de la manne comme nourriture, et leur octroya du blé céleste.
And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.
25 Tous eurent à manger de ce pain de délices: il leur avait envoyé des vivres à satiété.
Man did eat angels' food: he sent them food to the full.
26 Puis il abattit le vent d’Est sous les cieux, et sa puissance déchaîna le vent du Midi.
He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.
27 Il fit pleuvoir sur eux de la viande dru comme la poussière, des oiseaux ailés nombreux comme le sable de la mer;
He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like the sand of the sea:
28 il les fit tomber au milieu de leur camp, tout autour de leurs tentes.
And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.
29 Ils mangèrent et furent pleinement rassasiés: il leur accorda l’objet de leur convoitise.
So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;
30 Eux n’avaient pas encore assouvi leur désir, la nourriture était encore dans leur bouche,
They were not cut off from their lust. But while their food was yet in their mouths,
31 que la colère de Dieu s’éleva contre eux; il en décima les plus vigoureux et coucha à terre les gens d’élite en Israël.
The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and stroke down the chosen men of Israel.
32 Malgré cela ils péchèrent encore, et n’ajoutèrent point foi à ses merveilles.
For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.
33 Il mit donc fin à leurs jours par un souffle, à leurs années par des coups soudains.
Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.
34 Quand il les faisait ainsi périr, ils le recherchaient; venant à résipiscence, ils se mettaient en quête de Dieu.
When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.
35 Alors ils se souvenaient que Dieu était leur rocher, le Dieu suprême leur libérateur.
And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.
36 Ils l’amadouaient avec leur bouche, en paroles ils lui offraient des hommages menteurs,
Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.
37 mais leur cœur n’était pas de bonne foi à son égard; ils n’étaient pas sincèrement attachés à son alliance.
For their heart was not right with him, neither were they steadfast in his covenant.
38 Mais lui, plein de miséricorde, pardonne les fautes, pour ne pas consommer des ruines; bien souvent il laisse sa colère s’apaiser, et n’a garde de déchaîner tout son courroux.
But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.
39 Il se souvint donc que c’étaient de faibles créatures, un souffle qui s’évanouit sans retour.
For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passes away, and comes not again.
40 Que de fois ils s’insurgèrent contre lui dans le désert et l’offensèrent dans ces lieux solitaires!
How often did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!
41 Ils revenaient sans cesse à la charge, mettant à l’épreuve le Tout-Puissant, et défiant le Saint d’Israël.
Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.
42 Ils étaient oublieux de sa puissance, oublieux du jour où il les délivra de l’ennemi;
They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.
43 car il fit éclater ses prodiges en Egypte, et ses miracles dans les champs de Çoân.
How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan.
44 Il changea en sang leurs fleuves, et leurs cours d’eau ne furent plus potables.
And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.
45 Il lança contre eux des bêtes malfaisantes pour les dévorer, des grenouilles pour les ruiner.
He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.
46 Il livra leurs plantations aux locustes, et le produit de leur travail aux sauterelles.
He gave also their increase unto the caterpillar, and their labour unto the locust.
47 Par la grêle il fit périr leurs vignes, et leurs sycomores par les giboulées.
He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost.
48 Il abandonna leur bétail en proie à la grêle, et leurs troupeaux aux ravages de la foudre.
He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.
49 Il lâcha sur eux le feu de sa colère, courroux, malédiction et fléaux, tout un essaim d’anges malfaisants.
He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.
50 Il donna libre cours à sa colère, ne les préserva pas eux-mêmes de la mort, mais les fit succomber, victimes de la peste.
He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;
51 Il frappa tout premier-né en Egypte, les prémices de leur vigueur dans les tentes de Cham.
And stroke all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham:
52 Il mit en marche son peuple comme des brebis, et les conduisit comme un troupeau dans le désert.
But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
53 Il les fit avancer en sécurité, sans qu’ils eussent rien à craindre, alors que la mer s’était refermée sur leurs ennemis.
And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
54 Il les amena sur son saint territoire, sur cette montagne acquise par sa droite.
And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.
55 Il chassa des peuplades devant eux, leur en distribua le pays par lots héréditaires, et établit dans leurs tentes les tribus d’Israël.
He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.
56 Mais, redevenus rebelles, ils tentèrent le Dieu suprême, et cessèrent d’observer ses statuts.
Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:
57 Ils se dévoyèrent, devinrent infidèles comme leurs pères, se retournèrent comme un arc perfide.
But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.
58 Ils irritèrent Dieu par leurs hauts lieux, et, par leurs images sculptées, allumèrent sa jalousie.
For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.
59 Dieu entendit et s’emporta, eut un profond dégoût d’Israël.
When God heard this, he was angry, and greatly abhorred Israel:
60 Il délaissa la résidence de Silo, le tabernacle qu’il avait établi parmi les hommes.
So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;
61 Il laissa s’en aller en captivité sa puissance, et sa gloire tomber entre les mains de l’ennemi.
And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand.
62 Il livra son peuple au glaive, et s’emporta contre son héritage.
He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was angry with his inheritance.
63 Ses jeunes gens, le feu les dévora, ses jeunes filles ne connurent aucun chant d’hyménée.
The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.
64 Ses prêtres tombèrent par l’épée, et ses veuves ne pleurèrent point.
Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.
65 Alors le Seigneur se réveilla, tel un homme qui a dormi, tel un guerrier exalté par le vin.
Then the LORD awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouts by reason of wine.
66 Ses coups firent reculer ses adversaires: il leur infligea un opprobre éternel.
And he stroke his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.
67 Mais il rejeta le tabernacle de Joseph, et cessa de préférer la tribu d’Ephraïm.
Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
68 Il porta son choix sur la tribu de Juda, sur le mont Sion, qu’il avait pris en affection;
But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.
69 il bâtit son sanctuaire, solide comme les hauteurs célestes, comme la terre qu’il a fondée pour l’éternité.
And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he has established for ever.
70 Il élut David, son serviteur, et lui fit quitter les parcs des troupeaux.
He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:
71 Du milieu des brebis allaitant leurs petits, il l’amena pour être le pasteur de Jacob, son peuple, et d’Israël, son héritage.
From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.
72 Et lui, David, fut leur pasteur selon l’intégrité de son cœur, et les dirigea d’une main habile.
So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.
