Actes 22

1 " Mes frères et mes pères, écoutez ce que j'ai maintenant à vous dire pour ma défense. " —

Ye men brethre and fathers heare myne answere which I make vnto you.

2 Dès qu'ils entendirent qu'il leur parlait en langue hébraïque, ils firent encore plus de silence.

Whe they hearde that he spake in ye Ebrue tonge to them they kept the moore silence. And he sayde:

3 Et Paul dit: " Je suis Juif, né à Tarse en Cilicie; mais j'ai été élevé dans cette ville et instruit aux pieds de Gamaliel dans la connaissance exacte de la Loi de nos pères, étant plein de zèle pour Dieu, comme vous l'êtes tous aujourd'hui.

I am verely aman which am a Iewe borne in Tharsus a cite in Cicill: neverthelesse yet brought vp in this cite at ye fete of Gamaliel and informed diligently in the lawe of the fathers and was fervent mynded to Godwarde as ye all are this same daye

4 C'est moi qui ai persécuté cette secte jusqu'à la mort, chargeant de chaînes et jetant en prison hommes et femmes:

and I persecuted this waye vnto the deeth byndynge and delyveringe into preson bothe men and wemen

5 le grand-prêtre et tous les Anciens m'en sont témoins. Ayant même reçu d'eux des lettres pour les frères, je partis pour Damas afin d'amener enchaînés à Jérusalem ceux qui se trouvaient là, et de les faire punir.

as the chefe prest doth beare me witnes and all the elders: of whom also I receaved letters vnto the brethren and wet to Damasco to bringe them which were there bounde vnto Ierusalem for to be punysshed.

6 Mais comme j'étais en chemin, et déjà près de Damas, tout à coup, vers midi, une vive lumière venant du ciel resplendit autour de moi.

And it fortuned as I made my iorney and was come nye vnto Damasco aboute none yt sodenly ther shone fro heaven a greate lyght rounde aboute me

7 Je tombai par terre, et j'entendis une voix qui me disait: Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu?

and I fell vnto the erth and hearde a voyce sayinge vnto me: Saul Saul why persecutest thou me?

8 Je répondis: Qui êtes-vous, Seigneur? Et il me dit: Je suis Jésus de Nazareth, que tu persécutes.

And I answered: what arte thou Lorde? And he sayd vnto me: I am Iesus of Nazareth whom thou persecutest.

9 Ceux qui étaient avec moi virent bien la lumière, mais ils n'entendirent pas la voix de celui qui me parlait.

And they that were with me sawe verely a lyght and were a frayde: but they hearde not the voyce of him that spake with me.

10 Alors je dis: Que dois-je faire, Seigneur? Et le Seigneur me répondit: Lève-toi, va à Damas, et là on te dira tout ce que tu dois faire.

And I sayde: what shall I do Lorde? And the Lorde sayde vnto me: Aryse and goo into Damasco and there it shalbe tolde the of all thinges which are apoynted for the to do.

11 Et comme par suite de l'éclat de cette lumière je ne voyais plus, ceux qui étaient avec moi me prirent par la main, et j'arrivai à Damas.

And when I sawe nothynge for the brightnes of that light I was ledde by the honde of them that were with me and came into Damasco.

12 Or un homme pieux selon la Loi, nommé Ananie, et de qui tous les Juifs de la ville rendaient un bon témoignage,

And one Ananias a perfect man and as pertayninge to the lawe havinge good reporte of all the Iewes which there dwelt

13 vint me voir, et s'étant approché de moi, me dit: Saul, mon frère, recouvre la vue. Et au même instant je le vis.

came vnto me and stode and sayd vnto me: Brother Saul loke vp. And that same houre I receaved my sight and sawe him.

14 Il dit alors: Le Dieu de nos pères t'a prédestiné à connaître sa volonté, à voir le Juste et entendre les paroles de sa bouche.

And he sayde the God of oure fathers hath ordeyned the before that thou shuldest knowe his will and shuldest se that which is rightfull and shuldest heare the voyce of his mouth:

15 Car tu lui serviras de témoin, devant tous les hommes, des choses que tu as vues et entendues.

for thou shalt be his witnes vnto all men of tho thinges which thou thou hast sene and hearde.

16 Et maintenant que tardes-tu? Lève-toi, reçois le baptême et purifie-toi de tes péchés, en invoquant son nom. —

And now: why tariest thou? Aryse and be baptised and wesshe awaye thy synnes in callinge on ye name of ye Lorde.

17 De retour à Jérusalem, comme je priais dans le temple, il m'arriva d'être ravi en esprit,

And it fortuned when I was come agayne to Ierusalem and prayde in the teple yt I was in a trauce

18 et je vis le Seigneur qui me disait: Hâte-toi et sors au plus tôt de Jérusalem, parce qu'on n'y recevra pas le témoignage que tu rendras de moi. —

and sawe him sayinge vnto me. Make haste and get the quickly out of Ierusalem: for they will not receave thy witnes yt thou bearest of me.

19 Seigneur, répondis-je, ils savent eux-mêmes que je faisais mettre en prison et battre de verges dans les synagogues ceux qui croyaient en vous,

And I sayde: Lorde they knowe that I presoned and bet in every synagoge them that beleved on the.

20 et lorsqu'on répandit le sang d'Etienne, votre témoin, j'étais moi-même présent, joignant mon approbation à celle des autres et gardant les vêtements de ceux qui le lapidaient.

And when the bloud of thy witnes Steven was sheed I also stode by and consented vnto his deeth and kept the rayment of them that slewe him.

21 Alors il me dit: Va, c'est aux nations lointaines que je veux t'envoyer. "

And he sayde vnto me: departe for I will sende the a farre hence vnto the Gentyls.

22 Les Juifs l'avaient écouté jusqu'à ces mots; ils élevèrent alors la voix, en disant: " Ote de la terre un pareil homme; il n'est pas digne de vivre. "

They gave him audience vnto this worde and then lifte vp their voyces and sayde: a waye wt soche a felowe fro the erth: yt is pitie that he shuld live.

23 Et comme ils poussaient de grands cris, jetant leurs manteaux et lançant de la poussière en l'air,

And as they cryed and cast of their clothes and thrue dust into ye ayer

24 le tribun ordonna de faire entrer Paul dans la forteresse et de lui donner la question par le fouet, afin de savoir pour quel motif ils criaient ainsi contre lui.

ye captayne bade him to be brought into the castle and commaunded him to be scourged and to be examined that he myght knowe wherfore they cryed on him.

25 Déjà les soldats l'avaient lié avec les courroies, lorsque Paul dit au centurion qui était là: " Vous est-il permis de flageller un citoyen romain, qui n'est pas même condamné? "

And as they bounde him with thoges Paul sayde vnto the Centurion that stode by: Ys it laufull for you to scourge a man that is a Romain and vncondempned?

26 A ces mots, le centurion alla trouver le tribun pour l'avertir, et lui dit: " Que vas-tu faire? Cet homme est citoyen romain. "

When the Centurion hearde that he went and tolde the vpper captayne sayinge: What intendest thou to do? This man is a Romayne.

27 Le tribun vint et dit à Paul: " Dis-moi, es-tu citoyen romain? " " Oui, " répondit-il;

Then the vpper captayne came and sayde to him: tell me art thou a Romayne? He sayde: Yee.

28 et le tribun repris: " Moi, j'ai acheté bien cher ce droit de cité. " — " Et moi, dit Paul, je l'ai par ma naissance. "

And the captayne answered: with a greate some obtayned I this fredome. And Paul sayde: I was fre borne.

29 Aussitôt ceux qui se disposaient à lui donner la question se retirèrent; et le tribun aussi eut peur, quand il sut que Paul était citoyen romain et qu'il l'avait fait lier.

Then strayght waye departed from him they which shuld have examyned him. And the hye captayne also was a frayde after he knewe that he was a Romayne: because he had bounde him.

30 Le lendemain, voulant savoir exactement de quoi les Juifs l'accusaient, il lui fit ôter ses liens, et donna l'ordre aux princes des prêtres et à tout le Sanhédrin de se réunir; puis, ayant fait descendre Paul, il le plaça au milieu d'eux.

On the morowe because he wolde have knowen the certayntie wherfore he was accused of the Iewes he lowsed him from his bondes and commaunded the hye Prestes and all the counsell to come together and brought Paul and set him before them.
