Actes 17
1 Ayant ensuite traversé Amphipolis et Apollonie, Paul et Silas arrivèrent à Thessalonique, où était la synagogue des Juifs.
As they made their iorney thorow Amphipolis and Appolonia they came to Thessalonica where was a synagoge of the Iewes.
2 Selon sa coutume, Paul y entra, et pendant trois sabbats, il discuta avec eux. Partant des Ecritures,
And Paul as his maner was went in vnto them and thre saboth doyes declared oute of the scripture vnto them
3 il expliquait et établissait que le Messie avait dû souffrir et ressusciter des morts; et " ce Messie, disait-il, c'est le Christ Jésus que je vous annonce. "
openynge and allegynge that Christ must nedes have suffred and rysen agayne from deeth and that this Iesus was Christ whom (sayde he) I preache to you.
4 Quelques Juifs furent persuadés, et ils se joignirent à Paul et à Silas, ainsi qu'une grande multitude de gentils craignant Dieu, et un assez grand nombre de femmes du premier rang.
And some of them beleved and came and companyed with Paul and Sylas: also of the honourable Grekes a greate multitude and of the chefe wemen not a feawe.
5 Mais les Juifs, piqués de jalousie, enrôlèrent quelques mauvais sujets de la lie du peuple, provoquèrent des attroupements, et répandirent l'agitation dans la ville. Puis, s'étant précipités vers la maison de Jason, ils cherchèrent Paul et Silas pour les amener devant le peuple.
But the Iewes which beleved not havynge indignacio toke vnto the evyll men which were vagabondes and gadered a company and set all the cite on a roore and made asaute vnto the housse of Iason and sought to bringe the out to the people.
6 Ne les ayant pas trouvés, ils traînèrent Jason et quelques frères devant les politarques, en criant: " Ces hommes qui ont bouleversé le monde sont aussi venus ici,
But when they founde them not they drue Iason and certayne brethren vnto the heedes of the cite cryinge: these that trouble the worlde are come hydder also
7 et Jason les a reçus. Ils sont tous en contravention avec les édits de César, disant qu'il y a un autre roi, Jésus. "
which Iason hath receaved prevely. And these all do contrary to the elders of Cesar affirmynge another kynge one Iesus.
8 Ils mirent ainsi en émoi le peuple et les politarques qui les écoutaient.
And they troubled the people and the officers of the cite when they hearde these thinges.
9 Et ce ne fut qu'après avoir reçu une caution de Jason et des autres qu'ils les laissèrent aller.
And when they were sufficiently answered of Iason and of the other they let the goo.
10 Les frères, sans perdre de temps, firent partir de nuit Paul et Silas pour Bérée. Quand ils furent arrivés dans cette ville, ils se rendirent à la synagogue des Juifs.
And the brethren immediatly sent awaye Paul and Sylas by nyght vnto Berrea. Which when they were come thyther they entred into ye synagoge of the Iewes.
11 Ces derniers avaient des sentiments plus nobles que ceux de Thessalonique; ils reçurent la parole avec beaucoup d'empressement, examinant chaque jour les Ecritures, pour voir si ce qu'on leur enseignait était exact.
These were the noblest of byrthe amonge the of Thessalonia which receaved the worde wt all diligence of mynde and searched ye scriptures dayly whether those thinges were even so.
12 Beaucoup d'entre eux, et, parmi les Grecs, des femmes de qualité et des hommes en grand nombre, embrassèrent la foi.
And many of the beleved: also of worshipfull weme which were Grekes and of men not a feawe.
13 Mais quand les Juifs de Thessalonique surent que Paul annonçait aussi à Bérée la parole de Dieu, ils vinrent encore y agiter la population.
When the Iewes of Thessalonia had knowledge that ye worde of God was preached of Paul at Berrea they came there and moved the people.
14 Alors les frères firent sur-le-champ partir Paul jusqu'à la mer; mais Silas et Timothée restèrent à Bérée.
And then by and by ye brethre sent awaye Paul to goo as it were to ye see: but Sylas and Timotheus abode there still.
15 Ceux qui conduisaient Paul l'accompagnèrent jusqu'à Athènes; puis, chargés de mander à Silas et à Timothée de venir le rejoindre au plus tôt, ils s'en retournèrent.
And they that gyded Paul brought him vnto Attens and receaved a comaundment vnto Sylas and Timotheus for to come to him at once and came their waye.
16 Pendant que Paul les attendait à Athènes, il sentait en son âme une vive indignation au spectacle de cette ville pleine d'idoles.
Whyll Paul wayted for them at Attens his sprete was moved in him to se the cite geven to worshippinge of ymages.
17 Il discutait donc dans la synagogue avec les Juifs et les hommes craignant Dieu, et tous les jours dans l'Agora avec ceux qu'il rencontrait.
Then he disputed in the synagoge wt the Iewes and with the devout persones and in the market dayly with the that came vnto him.
18 Or quelques philosophes épicuriens et stoïciens ayant conféré avec lui, les uns disaient: " Que nous veut ce semeur de paroles? " D'autres, l'entendant prêcher Jésus et la résurrection, disaient: " Il paraît qu'il vient nous annoncer des divinités étrangères. "
Certayne philosophers of ye Epicures and of ye stoyckes disputed with him. And some ther were which sayde: what will this babler saye. Other sayd: he semeth to be a tydynges bringer of newe devyls because he preached vnto them Iesus and the resurreccion.
19 Et l'ayant pris avec eux, ils le menèrent sur l'Aréopage, disant: " Pourrions-nous savoir quelle est cette nouvelle doctrine que tu enseignes?
And they toke him and brought him into Marsestrete sayinge: maye we not knowe what this newe doctrine wher of thou speakest is?
20 Car tu nous fais entendre des choses étranges; nous voudrions donc savoir ce qu'il en est. "
For thou bringest straunge tydynges to oure eares. We wolde knowe therfore what these thinges meane.
21 Or tous les Athéniens et les étrangers établis dans la ville ne passaient leur temps qu'à dire ou à écouter des nouvelles.
For all the Attenians and straungers which were there gave the selves to nothinge els but ether to tell or to heare newe tydynges.
22 Paul, debout au milieu de l'Aréopage, parla ainsi: " Athéniens, je constate qu'à tous égards vous êtes éminemment religieux.
Paul stode in the myddes of Marse strete and sayde: ye men of Attens I perceave that in all thinges ye are to supersticious.
23 Car lorsqu'en passant je regardais les objets de votre culte, j'ai trouvé même un autel avec cette inscription: AU DIEU INCONNU. Celui que vous adorez sans le connaître, je viens vous l'annoncer.
For as I passed by and behelde the maner how ye worship youre goddes I founde an aultre wher in was written: vnto ye vnknowen god. Whom ye then ignoratly worship him shewe I vnto you.
24 Le Dieu qui a fait le monde et tout ce qu'il renferme, étant le Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, n'habite point dans des temples faits de main d'homme;
God that made the worlde and all that are in it seynge that he is Lorde of heven and erth he dwelleth not in temples made with hondes
25 il n'est point servi par des mains humaines, comme s'il avait besoin de quelque chose, lui qui donne à tous la vie, le souffle et toutes choses.
nether is worshipped with mennes hondes as though he neded of eny thinge seinge he him selfe geveth lyfe and breeth to all men every where
26 D'un seul homme il a fait sortir tout le genre humain, pour peupler la surface de toute la terre, ayant déterminé pour chaque nation la durée de son existence et les bornes de son domaine,
and hath made of one bloud all nacions of men for to dwell on all the face of the erthe and hath assigned before how longe tyme and also the endes of their inhabitacion
27 afin que les hommes le cherchent et le trouvent comme à tâtons: quoiqu'il ne soit pas loin de chacun de nous,
that they shuld seke God yf they myght fele and fynde him though he be not farre from every one of vs.
28 car c'est en lui que nous avons la vie, le mouvement et l'être; et, comme l'ont dit aussi quelques-uns de vos poètes... de sa race nous sommes.
For in him we lyve move and have oure beynge as certayne of youre awne Poetes sayde. For we are also his generacion.
29 Etant donc de la race de Dieu, nous ne devons pas croire que la divinité soit semblable à de l'or, à de l'argent, ou à de la pierre, sculptés par l'art et le génie de l'homme.
For as moche then as we are the generacion of God we ought not to thynke that the godhed is lyke vnto golde silver or stone graven by crafte and ymaginacion of man.
30 Dieu ne tenant pas compte de ces temps d'ignorance, annonce maintenant aux hommes qu'ils aient tous, en tous lieux, à se repentir;
And the tyme of this ignoraunce God regarded not: but now he byddeth all men every where repent
31 car il a fixé un jour où il jugera le monde selon la justice, par l'homme qu'il a désigné, et qu'il a accrédité auprès de tous, en le ressuscitant des morts. "
because he hath apoynted a daye in the which he will iudge the worlde acordynge to ryghtewesses by that man whom he hath apoynted and hath offered faith to all men after that he had raysed him from deeth.
32 Lorsqu'ils entendirent parler de résurrection des morts, les uns se moquèrent, les autres dirent: " Nous t'entendrons là-dessus une autre fois. "
When they hearde of ye resurreccion from deeth some mocked and other sayde: we will heare the agayne of this matter.
33 C'est ainsi que Paul se retira du milieu d'eux.
So Paul departed from amonge them.
34 Quelques personnes néanmoins s'attachèrent à lui et crurent; de ce nombre furent Denys l'Aréopagite, une femme nommée Damaris, et d'autres avec eux.
Howbeit certayne men clave vnto Paul and beleved amonge the which was Dionysius a senatour and a woman named Damaris and other with them.
