< 1 Corinthians 14 >

1 Follow after love and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
yuuya. m premaacara. ne prayatadhvam aatmikaan daayaanapi vi"se. sata ii"svariiyaade"sakathanasaamarthya. m praaptu. m ce. s.tadhva. m|
2 For he who speaks in another language speaks not to men, but to God, for no one understands, but in the Spirit he speaks mysteries.
yo jana. h parabhaa. saa. m bhaa. sate sa maanu. saan na sambhaa. sate kintvii"svarameva yata. h kenaapi kimapi na budhyate sa caatmanaa niguu. dhavaakyaani kathayati;
3 But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, exhortation, and consolation.
kintu yo jana ii"svariiyaade"sa. m kathayati sa pare. saa. m ni. s.thaayai hitopade"saaya saantvanaayai ca bhaa. sate|
4 He who speaks in another language edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the assembly.
parabhaa. saavaadyaatmana eva ni. s.thaa. m janayati kintvii"svariiyaade"savaadii samite rni. s.thaa. m janayati|
5 Now I desire to have you all speak with other languages, but even more that you would prophesy. For he is greater who prophesies than he who speaks with other languages, unless he interprets, that the assembly may be built up.
yu. smaaka. m sarvve. saa. m parabhaa. saabhaa. sa. nam icchaamyaha. m kintvii"svariiyaade"sakathanam adhikamapiicchaami| yata. h samite rni. s.thaayai yena svavaakyaanaam artho na kriyate tasmaat parabhaa. saavaadita ii"svariiyaade"savaadii "sreyaan|
6 But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking with other languages, what would I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?
he bhraatara. h, idaanii. m mayaa yadi yu. smatsamiipa. m gamyate tarhii"svariiyadar"sanasya j naanasya ve"svariiyaade"sasya vaa "sik. saayaa vaa vaakyaani na bhaa. sitvaa parabhaa. saa. m bhaa. samaa. nena mayaa yuuya. m kimupakaari. syadhve?
7 Even lifeless things that make a sound, whether pipe or harp, if they didn’t give a distinction in the sounds, how would it be known what is piped or harped?
apara. m va. m"siivallakyaadi. su ni. spraa. ni. su vaadyayantre. su vaadite. su yadi kka. naa na vi"si. syante tarhi ki. m vaadya. m ki. m vaa gaana. m bhavati tat kena boddhu. m "sakyate?
8 For if the trumpet gave an uncertain sound, who would prepare himself for war?
apara. m ra. natuuryyaa nisva. no yadyavyakto bhavet tarhi yuddhaaya ka. h sajji. syate?
9 So also you, unless you uttered by the tongue words easy to understand, how would it be known what is spoken? For you would be speaking into the air.
tadvat jihvaabhi ryadi sugamyaa vaak yu. smaabhi rna gadyeta tarhi yad gadyate tat kena bhotsyate? vastuto yuuya. m digaalaapina iva bhavi. syatha|
10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without meaning.
jagati katiprakaaraa uktayo vidyante? taasaamekaapi nirarthikaa nahi;
11 If then I don’t know the meaning of the language, I would be to him who speaks a foreigner, and he who speaks would be a foreigner to me.
kintuukterartho yadi mayaa na budhyate tarhyaha. m vaktraa mleccha iva ma. msye vaktaapi mayaa mleccha iva ma. msyate|
12 So also you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, seek that you may abound to the building up of the assembly.
tasmaad aatmikadaayalipsavo yuuya. m samite rni. s.thaartha. m praaptabahuvaraa bhavitu. m yatadhva. m,
13 Therefore let him who speaks in another language pray that he may interpret.
ataeva parabhaa. saavaadii yad arthakaro. api bhavet tat praarthayataa. m|
14 For if I pray in another language, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
yadyaha. m parabhaa. sayaa prarthanaa. m kuryyaa. m tarhi madiiya aatmaa praarthayate, kintu mama buddhi rni. sphalaa ti. s.thati|
15 What should I do? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
ityanena ki. m kara. niiya. m? aham aatmanaa praarthayi. sye buddhyaapi praarthayi. sye; apara. m aatmanaa gaasyaami buddhyaapi gaasyaami|
16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the “Amen” at your giving of thanks, seeing he doesn’t know what you say?
tva. m yadaatmanaa dhanyavaada. m karo. si tadaa yad vadasi tad yadi "si. syenevopasthitena janena na buddhyate tarhi tava dhanyavaadasyaante tathaastviti tena vakta. m katha. m "sakyate?
17 For you most certainly give thanks well, but the other person is not built up.
tva. m samyag ii"svara. m dhanya. m vadasiiti satya. m tathaapi tatra parasya ni. s.thaa na bhavati|
18 I thank my God, I speak with other languages more than you all.
yu. smaaka. m sarvvebhyo. aha. m parabhaa. saabhaa. sa. ne samartho. asmiiti kaara. naad ii"svara. m dhanya. m vadaami;
19 However, in the assembly I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in another language.
tathaapi samitau paropade"saartha. m mayaa kathitaani pa nca vaakyaani vara. m na ca lak. sa. m parabhaa. siiyaani vaakyaani|
20 Brothers, don’t be children in thoughts, yet in malice be babies, but in thoughts be mature.
he bhraatara. h, yuuya. m buddhyaa baalakaaiva maa bhuuta parantu du. s.tatayaa "si"savaiva bhuutvaa buddhyaa siddhaa bhavata|
21 In the law it is written, “By men of strange languages and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people. They won’t even listen to me that way, says the Lord.”

22 Therefore other languages are for a sign, not to those who believe, but to the unbelieving; but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to those who believe.
ataeva tat parabhaa. saabhaa. sa. na. m avi"scaasina. h prati cihnaruupa. m bhavati na ca vi"svaasina. h prati; kintvii"svariiyaade"sakathana. m naavi"svaasina. h prati tad vi"svaasina. h pratyeva|
23 If therefore the whole assembly is assembled together and all speak with other languages, and unlearned or unbelieving people come in, won’t they say that you are crazy?
samitibhukte. su sarvve. su ekasmin sthaane militvaa parabhaa. saa. m bhaa. samaa. ne. su yadi j naanaakaa"nk. si. no. avi"svaasino vaa tatraagaccheyustarhi yu. smaan unmattaan ki. m na vadi. syanti?
24 But if all prophesy, and someone unbelieving or unlearned comes in, he is reproved by all, and he is judged by all.
kintu sarvve. svii"svariiyaade"sa. m prakaa"sayatsu yadyavi"svaasii j naanaakaa"nk. sii vaa ka"scit tatraagacchati tarhi sarvvaireva tasya paapaj naana. m pariik. saa ca jaayate,
25 And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed. So he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.
tatastasyaanta. hkara. nasya guptakalpanaasu vyaktiibhuutaasu so. adhomukha. h patan ii"svaramaaraadhya yu. smanmadhya ii"svaro vidyate iti satya. m kathaametaa. m kathayi. syati|
26 What is it then, brothers? When you come together, each one of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has another language, or has an interpretation. Let all things be done to build each other up.

27 If any man speaks in another language, let there be two, or at the most three, and in turn; and let one interpret.
yadi ka"scid bhaa. saantara. m vivak. sati tarhyekasmin dine dvijanena trijanena vaa parabhaa. saa kathyataa. m tadadhikairna kathyataa. m tairapi paryyaayaanusaaraat kathyataa. m, ekena ca tadartho bodhyataa. m|
28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in the assembly, and let him speak to himself and to God.
kintvarthaabhidhaayaka. h ko. api yadi na vidyate tarhi sa samitau vaaca. myama. h sthitve"svaraayaatmane ca kathaa. m kathayatu|
29 Let two or three of the prophets speak, and let the others discern.
apara. m dvau trayo ve"svariiyaade"savaktaara. h sva. m svamaade"sa. m kathayantu tadanye ca ta. m vicaarayantu|
30 But if a revelation is made to another sitting by, let the first keep silent.
kintu tatraapare. na kenacit janene"svariiyaade"se labdhe prathamena kathanaat nivarttitavya. m|
31 For you all can prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be exhorted.
sarvve yat "sik. saa. m saantvanaa nca labhante tadartha. m yuuya. m sarvve paryyaaye. ne"svariiyaade"sa. m kathayitu. m "saknutha|
32 The spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets,
ii"svariiyaade"savakt. r.naa. m manaa. msi te. saam adhiinaani bhavanti|
33 for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints.
yata ii"svara. h ku"saasanajanako nahi su"saasanajanaka eveti pavitralokaanaa. m sarvvasamiti. su prakaa"sate|
34 Let the wives be quiet in the assemblies, for it has not been permitted for them to be talking except in submission, as the law also says,
apara nca yu. smaaka. m vanitaa. h samiti. su tuu. s.niimbhuutaasti. s.thantu yata. h "saastralikhitena vidhinaa taa. h kathaapracaara. naat nivaaritaastaabhi rnighraabhi rbhavitavya. m|
35 if they desire to learn anything. “Let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is shameful for a wife to be talking in the assembly.”
atastaa yadi kimapi jij naasante tarhi gehe. su patiin p. rcchantu yata. h samitimadhye yo. sitaa. m kathaakathana. m nindaniiya. m|
36 What!? Was it from you that the word of God went out? Or did it come to you alone?
ai"svara. m vaca. h ki. m yu. smatto niragamata? kevala. m yu. smaan vaa tat kim upaagata. m?
37 If any man thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize the things which I write to you, that they are the commandment of the Lord.
ya. h ka"scid aatmaanam ii"svariiyaade"savaktaaram aatmanaavi. s.ta. m vaa manyate sa yu. smaan prati mayaa yad yat likhyate tatprabhunaaj naapitam iityurarii karotu|
38 But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.
kintu ya. h ka"scit aj no bhavati so. aj na eva ti. s.thatu|
39 Therefore, brothers, desire earnestly to prophesy, and don’t forbid speaking with other languages.
ataeva he bhraatara. h, yuuyam ii"svariiyaade"sakathanasaamarthya. m labdhu. m yatadhva. m parabhaa. saabhaa. sa. namapi yu. smaabhi rna nivaaryyataa. m|
40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
sarvvakarmmaa. ni ca vidhyanusaarata. h suparipaa. tyaa kriyantaa. m|
