Proverbs 31
1 The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.
Lemuelin, Massan kuninkaan, sanat, joilla hänen äitinsä kasvatti häntä.
2 What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?
Mitä, poikani; mitä, kohtuni poika; mitä, lupausteni poika?
3 Give not thy strength to women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.
Älä anna voimaasi naisille, vaellustasi kuningasten turmelijatarten valtaan.
4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
Ei sovi kuningasten, Lemuel, ei sovi kuningasten viiniä juoda eikä ruhtinasten kysellä: "Missä väkijuomaa?"
5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.
Muutoin hän juodessaan unhottaa, mitä saädetty on, ja vääntelee kaikkien kurjuuden lasten oikeuden.
6 Give strong drink to him that is ready to perish, and wine to those that are of heavy hearts.
Antakaa väkevää juomaa menehtyvälle ja viiniä murhemielisille.
7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.
Sellainen juokoon ja unhottakoon köyhyytensä älköönkä enää vaivaansa muistelko.
8 Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.
Avaa suusi mykän hyväksi, oikeuden hankkimiseksi kaikille sortuville.
9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.
Avaa suusi, tuomitse oikein, hanki kurjalle ja köyhälle oikeus.
10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
Kelpo vaimon kuka löytää? Sellaisen arvo on helmiä paljon kalliimpi.
11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
Hänen miehensä sydän häneen luottaa, eikä siltä mieheltä riistaa puutu.
12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
Hän tekee miehellensä hyvää, ei pahaa, kaikkina elinpäivinänsä.
13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.
Hän puuhaa villat ja pellavat ja halullisin käsin askartelee.
14 She is like the merchant ships; she bringeth her food from afar.
Hän on kauppiaan laivojen kaltainen: leipänsä hän noutaa kaukaa.
15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth food to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
Kun yö vielä on, hän nousee ja antaa ravinnon perheellensä, piioilleen heidän osansa.
16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
Hän haluaa peltoa ja hankkii sen, istuttaa viinitarhan kättensä hedelmällä.
17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.
Hän voimalla vyöttää kupeensa ja käsivartensa vahvistaa.
18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her lamp goeth not out by night.
Hankkeensa hän huomaa käyvän hyvin, ei sammu hänen lamppunsa yöllä.
19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.
Hän ojentaa kätensä kehrävarteen ja käyttelee värttinää kämmenissään.
20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.
Hän avaa kätensä kurjalle, ojentaa köyhälle molemmat kätensä.
21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.
Ei pelkää hän perheensä puolesta lunta, sillä koko hänen perheensä on puettu purppuravillaan.
22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.
Hän valmistaa itsellensä peitteitä; hienoa pellavaa ja punapurppuraa on hänen pukunsa.
23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.
Hänen miehensä on tunnettu porteissa, maanvanhinten seassa istuessansa.
24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth waistbands to the merchant.
Hän aivinapaitoja tekee ja myy, vöitä hän kauppiaalle toimittaa.
25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
Vallalla ja kunnialla hän on vaatetettu, ja hän nauraa tulevalle päivälle.
26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and on her tongue is the law of kindness.
Suunsa hän avaa viisauden sanoihin, hänen kielellään on lempeä opetus.
27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
Hän tarkkaa talonsa menoa, eikä hän laiskan leipää syö.
28 Her children rise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
Hänen poikansa nousevat ja kiittävät hänen onneansa; hänen miehensä nousee ja ylistää häntä:
29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
"Paljon on naisia, toimellisia menoissaan, mutta yli niitten kaikkien kohoat sinä".
30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
Pettävä on sulous, kauneus katoavainen; ylistetty se vaimo, joka Herraa pelkää!
31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
Suokaa hänen nauttia kättensä hedelmiä, hänen tekonsa häntä porteissa ylistäkööt.
