Proverbs 17
1 Better is a dry morsel, and quietness with it, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.
Thà một miếng bánh khô mà thuận thảo, còn hơn nhà đầy thịt tế lễ mà xung đột.
2 A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
Chủ để nô lệ khôn ngoan quản trị đứa con ngỗ nghịch cho nó đồng hưởng gia tài giữa các anh em.
3 The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.
Lửa dùng thử bạc, thử vàng, Chúa Hằng Hữu thử lòng người.
4 A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.
Người làm ác thích nghe lời phỉnh dối; người giả trá mê theo lời xảo quyệt.
5 He that mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.
Ai chế giễu người nghèo, xúc phạm Đấng Tạo Hóa; ai vui mừng thấy người bị nạn sẽ bị hình phạt.
6 Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children is their fathers.
Cháu chắt là vương miện của người già; tổ phụ là vinh dự cho con cháu.
7 Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
Lời trang nhã không xứng người ngu; bậc lãnh tụ không nói câu xảo trá.
8 A bribe is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: wherever it turneth, it prospereth.
Của hối lộ như cái bùa trong tay người cầu cạnh; đi đến đâu hắn cũng được thành công!
9 He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.
Bỏ qua lỗi cho nhau đem lại tình yêu mến, nhắc lại mãi lỗi lầm làm phân rẽ bạn bè.
10 A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
Một lời quở trách thức tỉnh người khôn, hơn cả trăm roi đánh người ngu muội.
11 An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
Người hung ác chỉ thích nổi loạn, sứ giả bạo tàn sẽ đi dẹp nó.
12 Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
Thà đương đầu với gấu cái mất con, còn hơn gặp người dại nổi khùng.
13 Whoever rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
Người nỡ lấy ác báo thiện, chẳng hề thoát hậu quả khốc hại.
14 The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore withdraw from contention, before it be meddled with.
Tranh chấp khởi đầu như khơi nguồn nước chảy, thà nên dứt lời trước khi cãi lộn.
15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.
Tha cho người có tội và lên án người vô tội— cả hai đều ghê tởm trước mặt Chúa Hằng Hữu.
16 Why is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?
Người khờ ôm bạc đi học khôn, lòng không chuyên, bạc cũng vô hiệu.
17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Tình thân hữu bền chặt mãi mãi, nghĩa anh em quý lúc khổ nguy.
18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
Người dại dột bảo lãnh vội vàng, đem ách giữa đàng mang vào cổ.
19 He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
Ai ưa tranh cạnh chuốc điều tội ác; phô trương cửa đẹp rước họa vô nhà.
20 He that hath a perverse heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
Lòng xảo trá không hề thành đạt; lưỡi gian ngoa rước lấy họa tai.
21 He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
Con khờ khạo làm cha phiền lụy; người ưu sầu, vì con cái khùng điên.
22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
Niềm vui thỏa như thang thuốc bổ, nỗi thảm sầu phá hoại tủy xương.
23 A wicked man taketh a bribe out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.
Người tham nhũng nhận hối lộ vụng trộm, làm cán cân công lý lệch nghiêng.
24 Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
Người khôn sáng đeo đuổi khôn ngoan, mắt người dại nhìn chân trời góc bể.
25 A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him.
Con khờ dại làm buồn lòng cha và gây đắng cay cho mẹ đã sinh nó.
26 Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
Phạt vạ người vô tội và trừng phạt viên chức thanh liêm, cả hai đều không đúng.
27 He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
Người khôn ngoan thường ít lời; người thông sáng biết tự chủ.
28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
Biết im lặng, dại cũng thành khôn; biết kiềm chế miệng lưỡi được xem là sáng suốt.
