John 4
1 When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,
Quand le Seigneur connut que les Pharisiens avaient appris que Jésus faisait plus de disciples et en baptisait plus que Jean,
2 ( Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples, )
— toutefois ce n’était pas Jésus lui-même qui baptisait, mais ses disciples, —
3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.
il quitta la Judée, et s’en alla de nouveau en Galilée.
4 And he must needs go through Samaria.
Or, il lui fallait passer par la Samarie.
5 Then he cometh to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
Il vint donc en une ville de Samarie, nommée Sichar, près du champ que Jacob avait donné à son fils Joseph.
6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.
Or, là était le puits de Jacob. Jésus fatigué de la route, s’assit tout simplement au bord du puits: il était environ la sixième heure.
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith to her, Give me to drink.
Une femme de Samarie vint puiser de l’eau. Jésus lui dit: « Donnez-moi à boire. »
8 ( For his disciples had gone away to the city to buy food.)
Car ses disciples étaient allés à la ville pour acheter des vivres.
9 Then saith the woman of Samaria to him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, who am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
La femme samaritaine lui dit: « Comment toi, qui êtes Juif, me demandes-tu à boire, à moi qui suis Samaritaine? » (les Juifs, en effet, n’ont pas de commerce avec les Samaritains).
10 Jesus answered and said to her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked him, and he would have given thee living water.
Jésus lui répondit: « Si tu connaissais le don de Dieu, et qui est celui qui te dit: Donne-moi à boire, toi-même lui en aurais fait la demande, et il t’aurait donné de l’eau vive. —
11 The woman saith to him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from where then hast thou that living water?
Seigneur, lui dit la femme, tu n’as rien pour puiser, et le puits est profond: d’où aurais-tu donc cette eau vive?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, and his children, and his cattle?
Es-tu plus grand que notre père Jacob, qui nous a donné ce puits, et en a bu lui-même, ainsi que ses fils et ses troupeaux? »
13 Jesus answered and said to her, Whoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
Jésus lui répondit: « Quiconque boit de cette eau aura encore soif;
15 The woman saith to him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, neither come here to draw.
La femme lui dit: « Seigneur, donnez-moi de cette eau, afin que je n’aie plus soif, et que je ne vienne plus puiser ici. —
16 Jesus saith to her, Go, call thy husband, and come here.
Allez, lui dit Jésus, appelle ton mari, et viens ici. »
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
La femme répondit: « Je n’ai pas de mari. » Jésus lui dit: « Tu as raison de dire: Je n’ai pas de mari;
18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that thou hast spoken truth.
car tu as eu cinq maris, et celui que tu as maintenant n’est pas à toi; en cela, tu as dit vrai. »
19 The woman saith to him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
La femme dit: « Seigneur, je vois que tu es un prophète.
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
Nos pères ont adoré sur cette montagne, et vous, vous dites que c’est à Jérusalem qu’est le lieu où il faut adorer. »
21 Jesus saith to her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
Jésus dit: « Femme, crois-moi, l’heure vient où ce ne sera ni sur cette montagne, ni dans Jérusalem, que vous adorerez le Père.
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is from the Jews.
Vous adorez ce que vous ne connaissez pas; nous, nous adorons ce que nous connaissons, car le salut vient des Juifs.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
Mais l’heure approche, et elle est déjà venue, où les vrais adorateurs adoreront le Père en esprit et en vérité; ce sont de tels adorateurs que le Père demande.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
Dieu est esprit, et ceux qui l’adorent, doivent l’adorer en esprit et en vérité. »
25 The woman saith to him, I know that Messiah cometh, who is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
La femme lui répondit: « Je sais que le Messie (celui qu’on appelle Christ) va venir; lorsqu’il sera venu, il nous instruira de toutes choses. »
26 Jesus saith to her, I that speak to thee am he.
Jésus lui dit: « Je le suis, moi qui te parle. »
27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
Et à ce moment arrivèrent ses disciples, et ils s’étonnèrent de ce qu’il parlait avec une femme; néanmoins, aucun ne dit: « Que demandes-tu? » ou: « Pourquoi parles-tu avec elle? »
28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went into the city, and saith to the men,
La femme, alors, laissant là sa cruche, s’en alla dans la ville, et dit aux habitants:
29 Come, see a man, who hath told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
« Venez voir un homme qui m’a dit ce que j’ai fait; ne serait-ce pas le Christ? »
30 Then they went out of the city, and came to him.
Ils sortirent de la ville, et vinrent à lui.
31 In the mean while his disciples urged him, saying, Master, eat.
Pendant l’intervalle, ses disciples le pressaient, en disant: « Maître, mangez. »
32 But he said to them, I have food to eat that ye know not of.
Mais il leur dit: « J’ai à manger une nourriture que vous ne connaissez pas. »
33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him any thing to eat?
Et les disciples se disaient les uns aux autres: « Quelqu’un lui aurait-il apporté à manger? »
34 Jesus saith to them, My food is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
Jésus leur dit: « Ma nourriture est de faire la volonté de celui qui m’a envoyé et d’accomplir son œuvre.
35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say to you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
Ne dites-vous pas vous-mêmes: Encore quatre mois, et ce sera la moisson? Moi, je vous dis: Levez les yeux, et voyez les champs qui déjà blanchissent pour la moisson.
36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit to life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. (aiōnios g166)
Le moissonneur reçoit son salaire et recueille du fruit pour la vie éternelle, afin que le semeur et le moissonneur se réjouissent ensemble. (aiōnios g166)
37 And in this case is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
Car ici s’applique l’adage: Autre est le semeur et autre le moissonneur.
38 I sent you to reap that on which ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye have entered into their labours.
Je vous ai envoyés moissonner ce que vous n’avez pas travaillé; d’autres ont travaillé et vous, vous êtes entrés dans leur travail. »
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, who testified, He told me all that ever I did.
Or, beaucoup de Samaritains de cette ville crurent en Jésus sur la parole de la femme qui avait rendu ce témoignage: « Il m’a dit tout ce que j’ai fait. »
40 So when the Samaritans had come to him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.
Les Samaritains étant donc venus vers lui, le prièrent de rester chez eux, et il y demeura deux jours.
41 And many more believed because of his own word;
Et un plus grand nombre crurent en lui pour l’avoir entendu lui-même.
42 And said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
Et ils disaient à la femme: « Maintenant ce n’est plus à cause de ce que tu as dit que nous croyons; car nous l’avons entendu nous-mêmes, et nous savons qu’il est vraiment le Sauveur du monde. »
43 Now after two days he departed from there, and went into Galilee.
Après ces deux jours, Jésus partit de là pour se rendre en Galilée.
44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.
Car Jésus avait déclaré lui-même qu’un prophète n’est pas honoré dans sa patrie.
45 Then when he had come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went to the feast.
Lorsqu’il fut arrivé en Galilée, les Galiléens l’accueillirent, ayant vu tout ce qu’il avait fait à Jérusalem pendant la fête; car eux aussi étaient allés à la fête.
46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water into wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
Il retourna donc à Cana en Galilée, où il avait changé l’eau en vin. Or, il y avait un officier du roi dont le fils était malade à Capharnaüm.
47 When he heard that Jesus had come from Judaea into Galilee, he went to him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.
Ayant appris que Jésus arrivait de Judée en Galilée, il alla vers lui, et le pria de descendre, pour guérir son fils qui était à la mort.
48 Then said Jesus to him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
Jésus lui dit: « Si vous ne voyez des signes et des prodiges, vous ne croyez pas. »
49 The nobleman saith to him, Sir, come down before my child dieth.
L’officier du roi lui dit: « Seigneur, venez avant que mon enfant meure. —
50 Jesus saith to him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken to him, and he departed.
Va, lui répondit Jésus, ton enfant est plein de vie. » Cet homme crut à la parole que Jésus lui avait dite et partit.
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.
Comme il s’en retournait, ses serviteurs vinrent à sa rencontre, et lui apprirent que son enfant vivait.
52 Then he enquired of them the hour when he began to get better. And they said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
Il leur demanda à quelle heure il s’était trouvé mieux, et ils lui dirent: « Hier, à la septième heure, la fièvre l’a quitté. »
53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in which Jesus said to him, Thy son liveth: and he himself believed, and his whole house.
Le père reconnut que c’était l’heure à laquelle Jésus lui avait dit: « Ton fils est plein de vie », et il crut, lui et toute sa maison.
54 This is again the second miracle that Jesus performed, when he had come from Judaea into Galilee.
Ce fut le second signe que fit Jésus en revenant de Judée en Galilée.
