Proverbs 29
1 He that being often reproved stiffeneth his neck, suddenly shall be hurt, and there be no healing.
L'homme qui reprend vaut mieux que l'indocile; car celui-ci tombera soudain dans des maux cuisants et sans remède.
2 When the righteous become great, the people rejoice, but, when a lawless man beareth rule, a people sigh.
Quand les justes sont loués, les peuples sont dans la joie; mais quand les impies gouvernent, les hommes gémissent.
3 A man who loveth wisdom, gladdeneth his father, but, a companion of harlots, destroyeth wealth.
Un homme qui aime la sagesse fait la joie de son père; celui qui nourrit des prostituées dissipe ses richesses.
4 A king, by justice, shall establish a land, —but, a man open to bribes, bringeth it to ruin.
Le roi juste fait prospérer ses États; le méchant les ruine.
5 A man who flattereth his neighbour, spreadeth, a net, over his steps.
Celui qui tend un filet à la face de son ami, s'y prendra lui-même les pieds.
6 In the transgression of a wicked man, is a snare, but, the righteous, doth shout in triumph and rejoice.
Le pécheur marche environné de pièges; le juste vit plein de paix et de joie.
7 The righteous doth acknowledge the plea of the poor, but, the lawless, regardeth not knowledge.
Le juste sait rendre justice aux pauvres; mais l'impie n'entend pas cette science, et le nécessiteux n'a pas l'esprit assez intelligent.
8 Men given to mockery, inflame a city, —but, wise men, turn away anger.
Les hommes déréglés mettent en feu une ville; le sage apaise les colères.
9 A wise man pleading with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no settlement.
Un homme sage juge les nations; mais un homme méprisable, s'il se met en colère, fait rire et n'effraie personne.
10 Blood-thirsty men, hate the blameless man, and, as for the upright, they seek his life.
Les hommes de sang haïssent un saint; les hommes droits recherchent son âme.
11 All his anger, doth a dullard let go, but, a wise man, by keeping it back, stilleth it.
L'insensé donne cours à toute sa colère; le sage la contient et la mesure.
12 When a ruler giveth heed to the word of falsehood, all his attendants, become lawless.
Quand un roi prête l'oreille à l'injustice, tous ses sujets transgressent la loi.
13 The poor man and the man of usury, meet together, he that enlighteneth the eyes of them both, is Yahweh.
L'usurier et l'emprunteur marchent ensemble; le Seigneur les surveille l'un et l'autre.
14 When a king judgeth faithfully the poor, his throne, to futurity, shall be established.
Si un roi juge les pauvres selon la vérité, son trône sera affermi pour servir de témoignage.
15 A rod with rebuke, giveth wisdom, but, a youth unrestrained, bringeth shame to his mother.
Les réprimandes et les corrections donnent la sagesse; l'enfant qui s'en écarte est la honte de ses parents.
16 When the lawless become great, transgression increaseth, but, the righteous, shall behold, their ruin.
Plus il y a d'impies, plus il y a de péchés; les justes, avertis par leurs chutes, deviennent craintifs.
17 Correct thy son, that he may give thee rest, that he may give delight to thy soul.
Corrige ton fils, et il donnera à toi le repos, à ton âme la gloire.
18 Where there is no vision, a people is let loose, but, he that keepeth instruction, how happy is he!
Il n'est point de prophète pour une nation perverse; mais bienheureux est celui qui garde la loi.
19 By words, a servant will not be corrected, though he perceiveth, yet is there no answer.
La parole ne suffit pas pour corriger un mauvais serviteur; car même quand il la comprend, il lui est indocile.
20 Thou hast seen a man hasty in his words, —there is, more hope of a dullard, than of him.
Si tu vois un homme prompt à parler, sache que l'insensé même a plus d'espoir que lui.
21 He that dealeth tenderly with his servant from childhood, in his after life, shall have him for a son.
Celui qui, dès l'enfance, a vécu dans les délices, un jour sera au service d'autrui et pleurera sur lui-même.
22 A man given to anger, stirreth up strife, and, he that exceedeth in wrath, aboundeth in transgression.
L'homme enclin à la colère excite des discordes; l'homme irascible se creuse un abîme de péchés.
23 The loftiness of a man, layeth him low, —but, one of a lowly spirit, shall attain unto honour.
L'orgueil abaisse l'homme; le Seigneur est l'appui des humbles, et les élève en gloire.
24 He that shareth with a thief, hateth himself, an oath, he heareth, yet may not tell.
Celui qui prend sa part d'un larcin hait son âme; ceux qui ayant ouï un serment, n'en ont rien dit,
25 The fear of man, setteth a snare, but, he that trusteth in Yahweh, shall be placed on high.
par crainte ou par égard pour les hommes, ont failli. Celui qui met sa confiance dans le Seigneur sera dans la joie; l'impiété cause la chute de l'homme; celui qui a mis sa confiance dans le Maître, sera sauvé.
26 Many, seek the face of a ruler, but, from Yahweh, is the sentence of each one.
Beaucoup se prosternent devant la face du prince; mais c'est le Seigneur qui est le juge des hommes.
27 An abomination to the righteous, is the man of perversity, and, an abomination to the lawless, is a man of straightforward way.
Le juste est en abomination à l'injuste; et celui qui suit la droite voie est en abomination au pervers.
