< Psalms 79 >

1 A psalm of Asaph. Heathen, O God, have come into your land, defiling your holy temple, and laying Jerusalem in ruins.
Psalmus Asaph. Deus, venerunt gentes in hæreditatem tuam; polluerunt templum sanctum tuum; posuerunt Jerusalem in pomorum custodiam.
2 They have given the bodies of your dead servants to the birds of the air to devour, and the flesh of your faithful to the beasts of the field.
Posuerunt morticina servorum tuorum escas volatilibus cæli; carnes sanctorum tuorum bestiis terræ.
3 Round about Jerusalem they have poured out their blood like water; and there was no one to bury them.
Effuderunt sanguinem eorum tamquam aquam in circuitu Jerusalem, et non erat qui sepeliret.
4 On every side our neighbours revile us and mock us and jeer at us.
Facti sumus opprobrium vicinis nostris; subsannatio et illusio his qui in circuitu nostro sunt.
5 How long will you be angry, O Lord? Will your jealousy burn like fire forever?
Usquequo, Domine, irasceris in finem? accendetur velut ignis zelus tuus?
6 Pour out your wrath on the nations that don’t know you, on the kingdoms that do not call on your name.
Effunde iram tuam in gentes quæ te non noverunt, et in regna quæ nomen tuum non invocaverunt:
7 For Jacob they devoured, they have desolated his home.
quia comederunt Jacob, et locum ejus desolaverunt.
8 Do not remember against us our ancestors’ sins; O meet us soon with your pity, for utterly weak are we.
Ne memineris iniquitatum nostrarum antiquarum; cito anticipent nos misericordiæ tuæ, quia pauperes facti sumus nimis.
9 Help us, O God our saviour, for the renown of your name: for your reputation deliver us and cover over our sins.
Adjuva nos, Deus salutaris noster, et propter gloriam nominis tui, Domine, libera nos: et propitius esto peccatis nostris, propter nomen tuum.
10 Why should the nations say, ‘Where is their God?’ Let revenge for the outpoured blood of your servants be shown on the heathen before our eyes.
Ne forte dicant in gentibus: Ubi est Deus eorum? et innotescat in nationibus coram oculis nostris ultio sanguinis servorum tuorum qui effusus est.
11 May the groans of the prisoner come before you; free the children of death by your mighty arm.
Introëat in conspectu tuo gemitus compeditorum; secundum magnitudinem brachii tui posside filios mortificatorum:
12 Pay our neighbours back sevenfold for the scorn they have heaped upon you, O Lord.
et redde vicinis nostris septuplum in sinu eorum; improperium ipsorum quod exprobraverunt tibi, Domine.
13 Then we, your people, the flock of your pasture, will give thanks to you for evermore, and tell your praise to all generations.
Nos autem populus tuus, et oves pascuæ tuæ, confitebimur tibi in sæculum; in generationem et generationem annuntiabimus laudem tuam.
