2 Chronicles 23

1 But in the seventh year, Jehoiada had the courage to act. He made a pledge with the commanders of hundreds: Azariah, son of Jeroham, Ishmael, son of Jehohanan, Azariah, son of Obed, Maaseiah, son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat, son of Zichri.

Et la septième année Joiada s'enhardit et forma ligue avec les chefs de cent, Azaria, fils de Jéroham, et Ismaël, fils de Jochanan, et Azaria, fils de Obed, et Maaseïa, fils de Adaïa, et Elisaphat, fils de Zichri.

2 They traveled all over Judah and brought together the Levites from all the cities of Judah and the family leaders of Israel. When they came to Jerusalem,

Et ils firent la tournée de Juda, et rassemblèrent les Lévites de toutes les villes de Juda et les patriarches d'Israël, afin qu'ils vinssent à Jérusalem.

3 they all assembled at God's Temple and made a solemn agreement with the king. Jehoiada announced to them, “Look, here is the king's son and he must reign, just as the Lord promised the descendants of David would.

Et toute l'Assemblée conclut un pacte dans le Temple de Dieu avec le roi. Et Joiada leur dit: Voici, le fils du roi sera roi, ainsi que l'Éternel l'a promis au sujet des fils de David.

4 Here's what you have to do. One third of you priests and Levites who enter on the Sabbath shall guard the entrances.

Voici ce que vous avez à faire: Un tiers d'entre vous pris dans les Prêtres et les Lévites montera la garde le jour du Sabbat, comme portiers des seuils,

5 Another third shall go over to the king's palace, while the last third shall be at the Foundation Gate. Everyone else stay in the courtyards of the Lord's Temple.

et un tiers se tiendra au palais royal, et un tiers à la porte Jesod, et tout le peuple dans les parvis de l'Éternel.

6 No one should enter the Lord's Temple except the priests and those Levites are serving. They can enter because they have been made holy, but everyone else must follow the Lord's commands.

Et que dans le Temple de l'Éternel ne pénètre personne autre que les Prêtres et Lévites de service; que ceux-là entrent, car ils sont consacrés; et tout le peuple fera la garde de l'Éternel.

7 The Levites shall surround the king, weapons in hand. Kill anyone who enters the Temple. Stay close to the king wherever he goes.”

Et les Lévites entoureront le roi de tous les côtés, chacun ses armes à la main, et quiconque s'introduira dans le Temple doit être mis à mort; et escortez le roi à son entrée et à sa sortie.

8 The Levites and all the people of Judah did everything that Jehoiada the priest told them. The commanders each brought his men, both those coming on duty on the Sabbath and those going off duty, for Jehoiada the priest had not dismissed any of the divisions.

Et les Lévites et tous les hommes de Juda exécutèrent tous les ordres du Prêtre Joiada, et ils prirent chacun ses gens, ceux qui montaient la garde le jour du Sabbat, et ceux qui descendaient la garde le jour du Sabbat; car le Prêtre Joiada n'avait pas exempté les classes.

9 Jehoiada the priest provided the commanders with the spears and the large and small shields of King David that were in God's Temple.

Et le Prêtre Joiada donna aux chefs de cent les lances et les boucliers et les écus du roi David qui étaient dans la maison de Dieu.

10 He placed them all, with their weapons in hand, to surround the king from the south side of the Temple to the north side, and near the altar and the Temple.

Et il posta tout le monde, chacun son javelot à la main, depuis le flanc droit de l'édifice jusqu'au flanc gauche de l'édifice, à l'autel et vers le temple auprès du roi tout à l'entour.

11 Jehoiada and his sons then brought out the king's son, placed the crown on him, presented him with a copy of God's law, and proclaimed him king. They anointed him, and shouted out, “Long live the king!”

Et ils amenèrent dehors le fils du roi et lui posèrent la couronne et lui remirent la Loi, et le firent roi, et Joiada et ses fils l'oignirent et dirent: Vive le roi!

12 When Athaliah heard the noise of people running and shouting praise to the king, she rushed to the crowds at the Lord's Temple.

Alors Athalie entendit l'acclamation du peuple accourant et proclamant le roi, et elle vint se présenter au peuple dans le Temple de l'Éternel.

13 She saw the king standing by his pillar at the entrance. The commanders and trumpeters were with the king, and everyone was celebrating and blowing trumpets as the singers with musical instruments led the praise. Athaliah ripped her clothes and screamed out, “Treason! Treason!”

Et elle regarda, et voilà que le roi était debout sur son estrade à l'entrée, et les généraux et les trompettes étaient aux côtés du roi, et tout le peuple du pays était dans l'allégresse et sonnant des trompettes et les chantres avec des instruments préludaient à la louange. Alors Athalie déchira ses habits et dit: Conjuration! conjuration!

14 Jehoiada ordered the army commanders, “Bring her to the men standing in front of the Temple, and kill anyone who follows her.” Earlier the priest had made it clear, “She must not be killed in the Lord's Temple.”

Mais le Prêtre Joiada fit paraître les chefs de cent, commandants de l'armée, et leur dit: Menez-la dehors jusqu'entre les rangs, et que qui la suivra meure par l'épée; car le Prêtre disait: Ne la faites pas mourir dans le Temple de l'Éternel.

15 They grabbed hold of her and took her to the entrance of the Horse Gate of the king's palace, and killed her there.

Et ils lui ouvrirent passage, et elle entra par l'avenue de la porte des chevaux dans le palais royal, et là ils lui donnèrent la mort.

16 Then Jehoiada made a solemn agreement between himself and all the people and the king that they would be the Lord's people.

Et Joiada conclut un pacte entre lui et tout le peuple et le roi, à cet effet que le peuple devînt le peuple de l'Éternel.

17 Everyone went to the Temple of Baal and tore down its altars and smashed the idols. They killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, right in front of the altar.

Alors tout le peuple envahit le temple de Baal, et ils le renversèrent et en brisèrent les autels et les images; et Mathan, prêtre de Baal, ils le tuèrent devant les autels.

18 Jehoiada placed the responsibility for the Lord's Temple in the hands of the Levitical priests. They were the ones whom David had appointed over the Lord's Temple to offer burnt offerings to the Lord, as is required by the Law of Moses, with celebration and singing, as David instructed.

Et Joiada remit les fonctions du Temple de l'Éternel entre les mains des Prêtres, des Lévites que David avait répartis dans le Temple de l'Éternel pour offrir les holocaustes de l'Éternel, comme il est écrit dans la Loi de Moïse, avec réjouissance et avec chant, à la manière de David.

19 He placed gatekeepers at the entrances to the Lord's Temple, so that no one unclean for any reason could enter.

Et Joiada établit les portiers aux portes du Temple de l'Éternel, afin qu'il n'y pénétrât aucun impur à un titre quelconque.

20 Along with the commanders, the nobles, the governors of the people, and all the people, he led the king in a procession down from the Lord's Temple through the upper gate to the royal palace. There they set the king on the royal throne.

Et il prit les chefs de cent et les nobles et les Seigneurs du peuple et tout le peuple du pays et fit descendre le roi du Temple de l'Éternel, et ils entrèrent par la porte supérieure dans le palais royal et ils installèrent le roi sur le trône royal.

21 All throughout the land people celebrated, and Jerusalem was at peace, because Athaliah had been killed by the sword.

Et tout le peuple du pays se réjouissait, et la ville était tranquille, d'ailleurs ils avaient fait périr Athalie par l'épée.
