Proverbs 20
1 Wine is a luxurious thing, and drunkenness riotous: whosoever is delighted therewith shell not be wise.
Le vin est moqueur, les boissons fermentées tumultueuses; quiconque s'y adonne n'est pas sage.
2 As the roaring of a lion, so also is the dread of a king: he that provoketh him, sinneth against his own soul.
Semblable au rugissement du lion est la terreur qu'inspire le roi; celui qui l'irrite pèche contre lui-même.
3 It is an honour for a man to separate himself from quarrels: but all fools are meddling with reproaches.
C'est une gloire pour l'homme de s'abstenir des querelles, mais tout insensé s'abandonne à la colère.
4 Because of the cold the sluggard would not plough: he shall beg therefore in the summer, and it shall not be given him.
A cause du mauvais temps, le paresseux ne laboure pas; à la moisson, il cherchera, et il n'y aura rien.
5 Counsel in the heart of a man is like deep water: but a wise man will draw it out.
La pensée dans le cœur de l'homme est une eau profonde, mais l'homme intelligent y puisera.
6 Many men are called merciful: but who shall find a faithful man?
Beaucoup d'hommes vantent leur bonté; mais un homme fidèle, qui le trouvera?
7 The just that walketh in his simplicity, shall leave behind him blessed children.
Le juste marche dans son intégrité; heureux ses enfants après lui!
8 The king, that sitteth on the throne of judgment, scattereth away all evil with his look.
Le roi, assis sur le trône de la justice, dissipe tout mal par son regard.
9 Who can say: My heart is clean, I am pure from sin?
Qui dira: « J'ai purifié mon cœur, je suis net de mon péché? »
10 Diverse weights and diverse measures, both are abominable before God.
Poids et poids, épha et épha, sont l'un et l'autre en horreur à Yahweh.
11 By his inclinations a child is known, if his works be clean and right.
L'enfant montre déjà par ses actions si ses œuvres seront pures et droites.
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made them both.
L'oreille qui entend et l'œil qui voit, c'est Yahweh qui les a faits l'un et l'autre.
13 Love not sleep, lest poverty oppress thee: open thy eyes, and be filled with bread.
N'aime pas le sommeil, pour ne pas devenir pauvre; ouvre les yeux, et rassasie-toi de pain.
14 It is nought, it is nought, saith every buyer: and when he is gone away, then he will boast.
Mauvais! Mauvais! dit l'acheteur, et, en s'en allant, il se félicite.
15 There is gold, and a multitude of jewels: but the lips of knowledge are a precious vessel.
Il y a de l'or et beaucoup de perles, mais les lèvres sages sont un vase précieux.
16 Take away the garment of him that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge from him for strangers.
Prends son vêtement, car il a répondu pour autrui; exige de lui des gages à cause des étrangers.
17 The bread of lying is sweet to a man: but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
Le pain de fourberie est doux à l'homme, mais à la fin sa bouche est remplie de gravier.
18 Designs are strengthened by counsels: and wars are to be managed by governments.
Les projets s'affermissent par le conseil; conduis la guerre avec prudence.
19 Meddle not with him that revealeth secrets, and walketh deceitfully, and openeth wide his lips.
Celui qui s'en va médisant dévoile les secrets; évite avec soin celui qui a les lèvres toujours ouvertes.
20 He that curseth his father, and mother, his lamp shall be put out in the midst of darkness.
Si quelqu'un maudit son père et sa mère, sa lampe s'éteindra au sein des ténèbres.
21 The inheritance gotten hastily in the beginning, in the end shall be without a blessing.
Un héritage hâté à l'origine ne sera pas béni à la fin.
22 Say not: I will return evil: wait for the Lord and he will deliver thee.
Ne dis pas: « Je rendrai le mal; » espère en Yahweh, et il te délivrera.
23 Diverse weights are an abomination before the Lord: a deceitful balance is not good.
Poids et poids sont en horreur à Yahweh, et la balance fausse n'est pas une chose bonne.
24 The steps of man are guided by the Lord: but who is the man that can understand his own way?
C'est Yahweh qui dirige les pas de l'homme; et l'homme peut-il comprendre sa voie?
25 It is ruin to a man to devour holy ones, and after vows to retract.
C'est un piège pour l'homme de dire à la légère: « Cela est sacré! » et de ne réfléchir qu'après le vœu fait.
26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth over them the wheel.
Un roi sage dissipe les méchants, et fait passer sur eux la roue.
27 The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, which searcheth all the hidden things of the bowels.
L'âme de l'homme est une lampe de Yahweh; elle pénètre jusqu'au fond des entrailles.
28 Mercy and truth preserve the king, and his throne is strengthened by clemency.
La bonté et la fidélité gardent le roi, et il affermit son trône par la bonté.
29 The joy of young men is their strength: and the dignity of old men, their grey hairs.
La force est la parure des jeunes gens, et les cheveux blancs sont l'ornement des vieillards.
30 The blueness of a wound shall wipe away evils: and stripes in the more inward parts of the belly.
La meurtrissure qui déchire la chair guérit le mal; de même les coups qui atteignent au fond des entrailles.
