Job 4
1 Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said:
Alors Eliphaz de Théman prit la parole et dit:
2 If we begin to speak to thee, perhaps thou wilt take it ill, but who can withhold the words he hath conceived?
Si nous risquons un mot, peut-être en seras-tu affligé; mais qui pourrait retenir ses paroles?
3 Behold thou hast taught many, and thou hast strengthened the weary hands:
Voilà que tu en as instruit plusieurs, que tu as fortifié les mains débiles,
4 Thy words have confirmed them that were staggering, and thou hast strengthened the trembling knees:
que tes paroles ont relevé ceux qui chancelaient, que tu as raffermi les genoux vacillants!...
5 But now the scourge is come upon thee, and thou faintest: it hath touched thee, and thou art troubled.
Et maintenant que le malheur vient à toi, tu faiblis; maintenant qu'il t'atteint, tu perds courage!...
6 Where is thy fear, thy fortitude, thy patience, and the perfection of thy ways?
Ta crainte de Dieu n'était-elle pas ton espoir? Ta confiance n'était-elle pas dans la pureté de ta vie?
7 Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished being innocent? or when were the just destroyed?
Cherche dans ton souvenir: quel est l'innocent qui a péri? En quel lieu du monde les justes ont-ils été exterminés?
8 On the contrary I have seen those who work iniquity, and sow sorrows, and reap them,
Pour moi, je l'ai vu, ceux qui labourent l'iniquité et qui sèment l'injustice, en moissonnent les fruits.
9 Perishing by the blast of God, and consumed by the spirit of his wrath.
Au souffle de Dieu ils périssent, ils sont consumés par le vent de sa colère.
10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of the whelps of lions are broken:
Le rugissement du lion et sa voix tonnante sont étouffés, et les dents du jeune lion sont brisées;
11 The tiger hath perished for want of prey, and the young lions are scattered abroad.
le lion périt faute de proie, et les petits de la lionne se dispersent.
12 Now there was a word spoken to me in private, and my ears by stealth as it were received the veins of its whisper.
Une parole est arrivée furtivement jusqu'à moi, et mon oreille en a saisi le léger murmure.
13 In the horror of a vision by night, when deep sleep is wont to hold men,
Dans le vague des visions de la nuit, à l'heure où un sommeil profond pèse sur les mortels,
14 Fear seized upon me, and trembling, and all my bones were affrighted:
une frayeur et un tremblement me saisirent, et agitèrent tous mes os.
15 And when a spirit passed before me, the hair of my flesh stood up.
Un esprit passait devant moi... Les poils de ma chair se hérissèrent.
16 There stood one whose countenance I knew not, an image before my eyes, and I heard the voice as it were of a gentle wind:
Il se dressa, — je ne reconnus pas son visage, — comme un spectre sous mes yeux. Un grand silence, puis j'entendis une voix:
17 Shall man be justified in comparison of God, or shall a man be more pure than his maker?
L'homme sera-t-il juste vis-à-vis de Dieu? Un mortel sera-t-il pur en face de son Créateur?
18 Behold they that serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he found wickedness:
Voici qu'il ne se fie pas à ses serviteurs, et qu'il découvre des fautes dans ses anges:
19 How much more shall they that dwell in houses of clay, who have an earthly foundation, be consumed as with the moth?
combien plus en ceux qui habitent des maisons de boue, qui ont leurs fondements dans la poussière, qui seront réduits en poudre, comme par la teigne!
20 From morning till evening they shall be cut down: and because no one understandeth, they shall perish for ever.
Du matin au soir ils sont exterminés, et sans que nul y prenne garde, ils périssent pour jamais.
21 And they that shall be left, shall be taken away from them: they shall die, and not in wisdom.
La corde de leur tente est coupée, ils meurent avant d'avoir connu la sagesse.
