Acts 23
1 And Paul looking upon the council, said: Men, brethren, I have conversed with all good conscience before God until this present day.
Paul, les regards fixés sur le Sanhédrin, dit: " Mes frères, je me suis conduit devant Dieu jusqu'à ce jour dans toute la droiture d'une bonne conscience... "
2 And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
Le grand prêtre Ananie ordonna à ses satellites de le frapper sur la bouche.
3 Then Paul said to him: God shall strike thee, thou whited wall. For sittest thou to judge me according to the law, and contrary to the law commandest me to be struck?
Alors Paul lui dit: " Certainement, Dieu te frappera, muraille blanchie! Tu sièges ici pour me juger selon la Loi, et, au mépris de la Loi, tu ordonnes qu'on me frappe! "
4 And they that stood by said: Dost thou revile the high priest of God?
Les assistants dirent: " Tu outrages le grand-prêtre de Dieu! "
5 And Paul said: I knew not, brethren, that he is the high priest. For it is written: Thou shalt not speak evil of the prince of thy people.
Paul répondit: " Je ne savais pas, mes frères, qu'il fût grand-prêtre; car il est écrit: Tu ne proféreras pas d'injure contre un chef de ton peuple. "
6 And Paul knowing that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, cried out in the council: Men, brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees: concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.
Paul, sachant qu'une partie de l'assemblée était composée de Sadducéens et l'autre de Pharisiens, s'écria dans le Sanhédrin: " Mes frères, je suis Pharisien, fils de Pharisiens; c'est à cause de l'espérance en la résurrection des morts que je suis mis en jugement. "
7 And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees; and the multitude was divided.
Dès qu'il eut prononcé ces paroles, il s'éleva une discussion entre les Pharisiens et les Sadducéens, et l'assemblée se divisa.
8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.
Car les Sadducéens disent qu'il n'y a point de résurrection, ni d'ange et d'esprit, tandis que les Pharisiens affirment l'un et l'autre.
9 And there arose a great cry. And some of the Pharisees rising up, strove, saying: We find no evil in this man. What if a spirit hath spoken to him, or an angel?
Il y eut donc une bruyante agitation, et quelques Scribes du parti des Pharisiens, s'étant levés, engagèrent un vif débat, et dirent: " Nous ne trouvons rien à reprendre en cet homme; si un esprit ou un ange lui avait parlé?... "
10 And when there arose a great dissension, the tribune fearing lest Paul should be pulled in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.
Comme la discorde allait croissant, le tribun, craignant que Paul ne fût mis en pièces par eux, ordonna à des soldats de descendre pour l'enlever du milieu d'eux et de le ramener dans la forteresse.
11 And the night following the Lord standing by him, said: Be constant; for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.
La nuit suivante, le Seigneur apparut à Paul et lui dit: " Courage! De même que tu as rendu témoignage de moi dans Jérusalem, il faut aussi que tu me rendes témoignage dans Rome. "
12 And when day was come, some of the Jews gathered together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying, that they would neither eat, nor drink, till they killed Paul.
Dès que le jour parut, les Juifs ourdirent un complot et jurèrent avec des imprécations contre eux-mêmes, de ne manger ni boire jusqu'à ce qu'ils eussent tué Paul.
13 And they were more than forty men that had made this conspiracy.
Il y en avait plus de quarante qui s'étaient engagés dans cette conjuration.
14 Who came to the chief priests and the ancients, and said: We have bound ourselves under a great curse that we will eat nothing till we have slain Paul.
Ils allèrent trouver le prince des prêtres et les Anciens et dirent: " Nous avons solennellement juré de ne prendre aucune nourriture que nous n'ayons tué Paul.
15 Now therefore do you with the council signify to the tribune, that he bring him forth to you, as if you meant to know something more certain touching him. And we, before he come near, are ready to kill him.
Vous donc, maintenant, adressez-vous avec le Sanhédrin au tribun, pour qu'il l'amène devant vous, comme si vous vouliez examiner plus à fond sa cause; et nous, nous sommes prêts à le tuer pendant le trajet. "
16 Which when Paul’s sister’s son had heard, of their lying in wait, he came and entered into the castle and told Paul.
Le fils de la sœur de Paul ayant eu connaissance du complot, accourut à la forteresse et en donna avis à Paul.
17 And Paul, calling to him one of the centurions, said: Bring this young man to the tribune, for he hath some thing to tell him.
Celui-ci appela un des centurions et lui dit: " Mène ce jeune homme vers le tribun, car il a quelque chose à lui révéler. "
18 And he taking him, brought him to the tribune, and said: Paul, the prisoner, desired me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath some thing to say to thee.
Le centurion, prenant le jeune homme avec lui, le mena au tribun et dit: " Le prisonnier Paul m'a prié de t'amener ce jeune homme qui a quelque chose à te dire. "
19 And the tribune taking him by the hand, went aside with him privately, and asked him: What is it that thou hast to tell me?
Le tribun le prit par la main, et l'ayant tiré à part, il lui demanda: " Qu'as-tu à me communiquer? "
20 And he said: The Jews have agreed to desire thee, that thou wouldst bring forth Paul tomorrow into the council, as if they meant to inquire some thing more certain touching him.
Il répondit: " Les Juifs sont convenus de te prier de faire demain comparaître Paul devant le Sanhédrin, sous le prétexte d'examiner plus à fond sa cause.
21 But do not thou give credit to them; for there lie in wait for him more than forty men of them, who have bound themselves by oath neither to eat, nor to drink, till they have killed him: and they are now ready, looking for a promise from thee.
Ne les écoute pas, car plus de quarante d'entre eux lui dressent des embûches, et se sont engagés, avec des imprécations contre eux-mêmes, à ne manger ni boire avant qu'ils ne l'aient tué. Ils sont tout prêts et n'attendent que ton ordre. "
22 The tribune therefore dismissed the young man, charging him that he should tell no man, that he had made known these things unto him.
Le tribun renvoya ce jeune homme, après lui avoir recommandé de ne dire à personne qu'il lui avait fait ce rapport.
23 Then having called two centurions, he said to them: Make ready two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, and seventy horsemen, and two hundred spearmen for the third hour of the night:
Et ayant appelé deux centurions, il leur dit: " Tenez prêts, dès la troisième heure de la nuit, deux cents soldats avec soixante-dix cavaliers et deux cents lanciers, pour aller jusqu'à Césarée.
24 And provide beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe to Felix the governor.
Préparez aussi des chevaux pour y faire monter Paul, afin de le conduire sain et sauf au gouverneur Félix. "
25 (For he feared lest perhaps the Jews might take him away by force and kill him, and he should afterwards be slandered, as if he was to take money.) And he wrote a letter after this manner:
Il avait écrit une lettre ainsi conçue:
26 Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor, Felix, greeting.
" Claude Lysias, au très excellent gouverneur Félix, salut.
27 This man being taken by the Jews, and ready to be killed by them, I rescued coming in with an army, understanding that he is a Roman:
Les Juifs s'étaient saisis de cet homme et allaient le tuer, lorsque je survins avec des soldats et l'arrachai de leurs mains, ayant appris qu'il était Romain.
28 And meaning to know the cause which they objected unto him, I brought him forth into their council.
Voulant savoir de quel crime ils l'accusaient, je le menai devant leur assemblée,
29 Whom I found to be accused concerning questions of their law; but having nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bands.
et je trouvai qu'il était accusé au sujet de questions relatives à leur loi, mais n'avait commis aucun crime qui méritât la mort ou la prison.
30 And when I was told of ambushes that they had prepared for him, I sent him to thee, signifying also to his accusers to plead before thee. Farewell.
Informé que les Juifs lui dressaient des embûches, je te l'ai immédiatement envoyé, en faisant savoir à ses accusateurs qu'ils eussent à s'expliquer devant toi à son sujet. [Adieu.] "
31 Then the soldiers, according as it was commanded them, taking Paul, brought him by night to Antipatris.
Les soldats ayant donc pris Paul, selon l'ordre qu'ils avaient reçu, le conduisirent pendant la nuit à Antipatris.
32 And the next day, leaving the horsemen to go with him, they returned to the castle.
Le lendemain, laissant les cavaliers poursuivre la route avec le prisonnier, ils retournèrent à la forteresse.
33 Who, when they were come to Caesarea, and had delivered the letter to the governor, did also present Paul before him.
Arrivés à Césarée, les cavaliers remirent la lettre au gouverneur et lui présentèrent Paul.
34 And when he had read it, and had asked of what province he was, and understood that he was of Cilicia;
Le gouverneur, après avoir lu la lettre, demanda de quelle province était Paul, et apprenant qu'il était de Cilicie:
35 I will hear thee, said he, when thy accusers come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod’s judgment hall.
" Je t'entendrai, dit-il, quand tes accusateurs seront venus. " Et il ordonna de le garder dans le prétoire d'Hérode.
