Psalms 44

1 For the end, a Psalm for instruction, for the sons of Core. O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, the work which you wrought in their days, in the days of old.

Au maître de chant. Des fils de Coré. Cantique. O Dieu, nous avons entendu de nos oreilles, nos pères nous ont raconté l’œuvre que tu as accomplie de leur temps, aux jours anciens.

2 Your hand utterly destroyed the heathen, and you did plant them: you did afflict the nations, and cast them out.

De ta main tu as chassé des nations pour les établir, tu as frappé des peuples pour les étendre.

3 For they inherited not the land by their [own] sword, and their [own] arm did not deliver them; but your right hand, and your arm, and the light of your countenance, because you were well pleased in them.

Car ce n’est pas avec leur épée qu’ils ont conquis le pays, ce n’est pas leur bras qui leur a donné la victoire; mais c’est ta droite, c’est ton bras, c’est la lumière de ta face, parce que tu les aimais.

4 You are indeed my King and my God, who command deliverances for Jacob.

C’est toi qui es mon roi, ô Dieu: ordonne le salut de Jacob!

5 In you will we push down our enemies, and in your name will we bring to nothing them that rise up against us.

Par toi nous renverserons nos ennemis, en ton nom nous écraserons nos adversaires.

6 For I will not trust in my bow, and my sword shall not save me.

Car ce n’est pas en mon arc que j’ai confiance ce n’est pas mon épée qui me sauvera.

7 For you have saved us from them that afflicted us, and have put to shame them that hated us.

Mais c’est toi qui nous délivres de nos ennemis, et qui confonds ceux qui nous haïssent.

8 In God will we make our boast all the day, and to your name will we give thanks for ever. (Pause)

En Dieu nous nous glorifions chaque jour, et nous célébrons ton nom à jamais. — Séla.

9 But now you have cast off, and put us to shame; and you will not go forth with our hosts.

Cependant tu nous repousses et nous couvres de honte; tu ne sors plus avec nos armées.

10 You have turned us back before our enemies; and they that hated us spoiled for themselves.

Tu nous fais reculer devant l’ennemi, et ceux qui nous haïssent nous dépouillent.

11 You made us as sheep for meat; and you scattered us amongst the nations.

Tu nous livres comme des brebis destinées à la boucherie, tu nous disperses parmi les nations;

12 You have sold your people without price, and there was no profit by their exchange.

tu vends ton peuple à vil prix, tu ne l’estimes pas à une grande valeur.

13 You have made us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and derision them that are round about us.

Tu fais de nous un objet d’opprobre pour nos voisins, de moquerie et de risée pour ceux qui nous entourent.

14 You have made us a proverb amongst the Gentiles, a shaking of the head amongst the nations.

Tu nous rends la fable des nations, et un sujet de hochements de tête parmi les peuples.

15 All the day my shame is before me, and the confusion of my face has covered me,

Ma honte est toujours devant mes yeux, et la confusion couvre mon visage,

16 because of the voice of the slanderer and reviler; because of the enemy and avenger.

à la voix de celui qui m’insulte et m’outrage, à la vue de l’ennemi et de celui qui respire la vengeance.

17 All these things are come upon us: but we have not forgotten you, neither have we dealt unrighteously in your covenant.

Tout cela nous arrive sans que nous t’ayons oublié, sans que nous ayons été infidèles à ton alliance.

18 And our heart has not gone back; but you have turned aside our paths from your way.

Notre cœur ne s’est pas détourné en arrière, nos pas ne se sont pas écartés de ton sentier,

19 For you have laid us low in a place of affliction, and the shadow of death has covered us.

pour que tu nous écrases dans la retraite des chacals, et que tu nous couvres de l’ombre de la mort.

20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, and if we have spread out our hands to a strange god; shall not God search these things out?

Si nous avions oublié le nom de notre Dieu, et tendu les mains vers un dieu étranger,

21 for he knows the secrets of the heart.

Dieu ne l’aurait-il pas aperçu, lui qui connaît les secrets du cœur?

22 For, for your sake we are killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for slaughter.

Mais c’est à cause de toi qu’on nous égorge tous les jours, qu’on nous traite comme des brebis destinées à la boucherie.

23 Awake, therefore sleep you, O Lord? arise, and do not cast [us] off for ever.

Réveille-toi! Pourquoi dors-tu, Seigneur? Réveille-toi, et ne nous repousse pas à jamais!

24 Therefore turn you your face away, [and] forget our poverty and our affliction?

Pourquoi caches-tu ta face, oublies-tu notre misère et notre oppression?

25 For our soul has been brought down to the dust; our belly has cleaved to the earth.

Car notre âme est affaissée jusqu’à la poussière, notre corps est attaché à la terre.

26 Arise, O Lord, help us, and redeem us for your name's sake.

Lève-toi pour nous secourir, délivre-nous à cause de ta bonté!
