Kings II 2
1 And it came to pass after this that David enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up into one of the cities of Juda? and the Lord said to him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? and he said, To Chebron.
Après cela, David consulta Yahweh, en disant: « Monterai-je dans une des villes de Juda? » Yahweh lui répondit: « Monte. » David dit: « Où monterai-je? » Et Yahweh répondit: « A Hébron. »
2 And David went up there to Chebron, [he] and both his wives, Achinaam the Jezraelitess, and Abigaia the wife of Nabal the Carmelite,
David y monta, avec ses deux femmes, Achinoam de Jezraël et Abigaïl de Carmel, femme de Nabal.
3 and the men that were with him, every one and his family; and they lived in the cities of Chebron.
David fit aussi monter les hommes qui étaient avec lui, chacun avec sa famille; ils habitèrent dans les villes d’Hébron.
4 And the men of Judea come, and anoint David there to reign over the house of Juda; and they reported to David, saying, The men of Jabis of the country of Galaad have buried Saul.
Et les hommes de Juda vinrent, et là ils oignirent David pour roi sur la maison de Juda. On informa David que c’étaient les hommes de Jabès en Galaad qui avaient enterré Saül.
5 And David sent messengers to the rulers of Jabis of the country of Galaad, and David said to them, Blessed be you of the Lord, because you have wrought this mercy towards your lord, even towards Saul the anointed of the Lord, and you have buried him and Jonathan his son.
Et David envoya des messagers aux gens de Jabès en Galaad pour leur dire: « Soyez bénis de Yahweh, de ce que vous avez rempli ce pieux devoir envers Saül, votre seigneur, et l’avez enterré.
6 And now may the Lord deal in mercy and truth towards you: and I also will requite towards you this good deed, because you have done this.
Et maintenant, que Yahweh use envers vous de bonté et de fidélité! Moi aussi, je vous rendrai ce bien, parce que vous avez agi de la sorte.
7 And now let your hands be made strong, and be valiant; for your master Saul is dead, and moreover the house of Juda have anointed me to be king over them.
Et, maintenant, que vos mains se fortifient, et soyez de vaillants hommes; car votre seigneur Saül est mort, et c’est moi que la maison de Juda a oint pour être son roi. »
8 But Abenner, the son of Ner, the commander-in-chief of Saul's army, took Jebosthe son of Saul, and brought him up from the camp to Manaem
Cependant Abner, fils de Ner, chef de l’armée de Saül, prit Isboseth, fils de Saül, et, l’ayant fait passer à Mahanaïm,
9 and made him king over the land of Galaad, and over Thasiri, and over Jezrael, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
il l’établit roi sur Galaad, sur les Assurites, sur Jezraël, sur Ephraïm, sur Benjamin, sur tout Israël.
10 Jebosthe, Saul's son [was] forty years old, when he reigned over Israel; and he reigned two years, but not over the house of Juda, who followed David.
— Isboseth, fils de Saül, était âgé de quarante ans lorsqu’il régna sur Israël, et il régna deux ans. — Seule, la maison de Juda restait attachée à David.
11 And the days which David reigned in Chebron over the house of Juda were seven years and six months.
Le temps pendant lequel David régna, à Hébron, sur la maison de Juda fut de sept ans et six mois.
12 And Abenner the son of Ner went forth, and the servants of Jebosthe the son of Saul, from Manaem to Gabaon.
Abner, fils de Ner, et les serviteurs d’Isboseth, fils de Saül, sortirent de Mahanaïm pour marcher sur Gabaon.
13 And Joab the son of Saruia, and the servants of David, went forth from Chebron, and met them at the fountain of Gabaon, at the same place: and these sat down by the fountain on this side, and those by the fountain on that side.
Joab, fils de Sarvia, et les serviteurs de David, se mirent aussi en marche. Ils se rencontrèrent près de l’étang de Gabaon, et ils s’établirent, les uns d’un côté de l’étang, les autres de l’autre côté de l’étang.
14 And Abenner said to Joab, Let now the young men arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.
Abner dit à Joab: « Que les jeunes gens se lèvent et qu’ils joutent devant nous! » Joab répondit: « Qu’ils se lèvent! »
15 And there arose and passed over by number twelve of the children of Benjamin, belonging to Jebosthe the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
Ils se levèrent et s’avancèrent en nombre égal, douze pour Benjamin et pour Isboseth, fils de Saül, et douze des serviteurs de David.
16 And they seized every one the head of his neighbour with his hand, and his sword [was thrust] into the side of his neighbour, and they fall down together: and the name of that place was called The portion of the treacherous ones, which is in Gabaon.
Chacun, saisissant son adversaire par la tête, enfonça son épée dans le flanc de son compagnon, et ils tombèrent tous ensemble. Et l’on donna à ce lieu le nom de Chelqath Hatsourim; il est en Gabaon.
17 And the battle was very severe on that day; and Abenner and the men of Israel were worsted before the servants of David.
Et le combat devint très rude en ce jour-là, et Abner et les hommes d’Israël furent défaits par les serviteurs de David.
18 And there were there the three sons of Saruia, Joab, and Abessa, and Asael: and Asael was swift in his feet as a roe in the field.
Là se trouvaient les trois fils de Sarvia: Joab, Abisaï et Asaël. Asaël avait les pieds légers comme une des gazelles qui sont dans les champs;
19 And Asael followed after Abenner, and turned not to go to the right hand or to the left from following Abenner.
Asaël poursuivit Abner, sans se détourner de derrière Abner, pour aller à droite ou à gauche.
20 And Abenner looked behind him, and said, Are you Asael himself? and he said, I am.
Abner, se tourna derrière lui et dit: « Est-ce toi, Asaël? » Et il répondit: « C’est moi. »
21 And Abenner said to him, Turn you to the right hand or to the left, and lay hold for yourself on one of the young men, and take to yourself his armour: but Asel would not turn back from following him.
Abner lui dit: « Ecarte-toi à droite ou à gauche; saisis l’un des jeunes gens et prends sa dépouille. » Mais Asaël ne voulut pas se détourner de lui.
22 And Abenner said yet again to Asael, Stand aloof from me, lest I strike you to the ground? and how should I lift up my face to Joab?
Abner dit encore à Asaël: « Détourne-toi de derrière moi; pourquoi te frapperais-je et t’étendrais-je par terre? Comment pourrais-je ensuite lever mon visage devant Joab, ton frère! »
23 And what does this mean? return to Joab your brother? But he would not stand aloof; and Abenner smites him with the hinder end of the spear on the loins, and the spear went out behind him, and he falls there and dies on the spot: and it came to pass that every one that came to the place where Asael fell and died, stood still.
Et Asaël refusa de se détourner. Alors Abner le frappa au ventre avec l’extrémité inférieure de sa lance, et la lance sortit par derrière. Il tomba là, et mourut sur place. Tous ceux qui arrivaient au lieu où Asaël était tombé et était mort, s’y arrêtaient.
24 And Joab and Abessa pursued after Abenner, and the sun went down: and they went as far as the hill of Amman, which is in the front of Gai, by the desert way of Gabaon.
Joab et Abisaï poursuivirent Abner; au coucher du soleil, ils arrivèrent à la colline d’Ammah, qui est à l’est de Giach, sur le chemin du désert de Gabaon.
25 And the children of Benjamin who followed Abenner gather themselves together, and they formed themselves into one body, and stood on the top of a hill.
Les fils de Benjamin se rallièrent à la suite d’Abner et, réunis en un seul corps d’armée, ils s’arrêtèrent au sommet d’une colline.
26 And Abenner called Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour perpetually? know you not that it will be bitter at last? How long then will you refuse to tell the people to turn from following our brethren?
Abner appela Joab et dit: « L’épée dévorera-t-elle toujours? Ne sais-tu pas qu’il y aura de l’amertume à la fin? Jusques à quand attendras-tu à dire au peuple de cesser de poursuivre ses frères? »
27 And Joab said, As the Lord lives, if you had not spoken, even from the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.
Joab répondit: « Aussi vrai que Dieu est vivant! si tu n’avais pas parlé, le peuple n’aurait pas cessé avant demain matin de poursuivre chacun son frère. »
28 And Joab sounded the trumpet, and all the people departed, and did not pursue after Israel, and did not fight any longer.
Et Joab sonna de la trompette, et tout le peuple s’arrêta; ils ne poursuivirent plus Israël, et ils ne continuèrent pas à se battre.
29 And Abenner and his men departed at evening, [and went] all that night, and crossed over Jordan, and went along the whole adjacent [country], and they come to the camp.
Abner et ses gens, après avoir marché toute la nuit dans la Plaine, passèrent le Jourdain, traversèrent tout le Bithron, et arrivèrent à Mahanaïm.
30 And Joab returned from following Abenner, and he assembled all the people, and there were missing of the people of David, nineteen men, and Asael.
Joab aussi cessa de poursuivre Abner et rassembla tout le peuple; il manquait dix-neuf hommes des serviteurs de David, et Asaël.
31 And the servants of David struck of the children of Benjamin, of the men of Abenner, three hundred and sixty men belonging to him.
Et les serviteurs de David avaient frappé à mort trois cent soixante hommes de Benjamin et des hommes d’Abner.
32 And they take up Asael, and bury him in the tomb of his father in Bethleem. And Joab and the men with him went all the night, and the morning rose upon them in Chebron.
Ils emportèrent Asaël et l’enterrèrent dans le sépulcre de son père, qui est à Bethléem. Joab et ses hommes marchèrent toute la nuit, et ils arrivèrent à Hébron au point du jour.
