Kings III 1
1 And king David [was] old and advanced in days, and they covered him with clothes, and he was not warmed.
Le roi David était vieux, avancé en âge; on le couvrait de vêtements, sans qu’il pût se réchauffer.
2 And his servants said, Let them seek for the king a young virgin, and she shall wait on the king, and cherish him, and lie with him, and my lord the king shall be warmed.
Ses serviteurs lui dirent: « Que l’on cherche pour mon seigneur le roi une jeune fille vierge; qu’elle se tienne devant le roi et le soigne, et qu’elle couche dans ton sein, et mon seigneur le roi se réchauffera. »
3 So they sought for a fair damsel out of all the coasts of Israel; and they found Abisag the Somanite, and they brought her to the king.
On chercha dans tout le territoire d’Israël une jeune fille qui fût belle, et l’on trouva Abisag, la Sunamite, que l’on amena au roi.
4 And the damsel was extremely beautiful, and she cherished the king, and ministered to him, but the king knew her not.
Cette jeune fille était fort belle; elle soigna le roi et le servit; mais le roi ne la connut point.
5 And Adonias the son of Aggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king; and he prepared for himself chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him.
Or Adonias, fils de Haggith, s’élevait dans ses pensées, disant: « C’est moi qui serai roi. » Et il se procura des chars et des chevaux, et cinquante hommes courant devant lui.
6 And his father never at any time checked him, saying, Why have you done [thus]? and he was also very handsome in appearance, and his mother bore him after Abessalom.
Et son père ne lui avait jamais fait de peine dans sa vie en lui disant: « Pourquoi agis-tu ainsi? » En outre, Adonias était très beau de figure, et sa mère l’avait enfanté après Absalom.
7 And he conferred with Joab the son of Saruia, and with Abiathar the priest, and they followed after Adonias.
Il y eut des entretiens avec Joab, fils de Sarvia, et avec le prêtre Abiathar; et ils embrassèrent le parti d’Adonias.
8 But Sadoc the priest, and Banaeas the son of Jodae, and Nathan the prophet, and Semei, and Resi, and the mighty men of David, did not follow Adonias.
Mais le prêtre Sadoc, Banaïas, fils de Joïadas, Nathan le prophète, Séméï, Réï et les vaillants hommes de David ne furent pas avec Adonias.
9 And Adonias sacrificed sheep and calves and lambs by the stone of Zoelethi, which was near Rogel: and he called all his brethren, and all the adult [men] of Juda, servants of the king.
Adonias immola des brebis, des bœufs et des veaux gras près de la pierre de Zohéleth, qui est à côté d’En-Rogel, et il invita tous ses frères, fils du roi, et tous les hommes de Juda, serviteurs du roi.
10 But Nathan the prophet, and Banaeas, and the mighty [men], and Solomon his brother, he did not call.
Mais il n’invita pas Nathan le prophète, ni Banaïas, ni les vaillants hommes, ni Salomon, son frère.
11 And Nathan spoke to Bersabee the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast you not heard that Adonias the son of Aggith reigns, and our lord David knows it not?
Alors Nathan dit à Bethsabée, mère de Salomon: « N’as-tu pas appris qu’Adonias, fils de Haggith, est devenu roi, sans que notre seigneur David le sache?
12 And now come, let me, I pray, give you counsel, and you shall rescue your life, and the life of your son Solomon.
Viens donc maintenant, laisse-moi te donner un conseil, afin que tu sauves ta vie et celle de ton fils Salomon.
13 Haste, and go in to king David, and you shall speak to him, saying, Hast not you, my lord, O king, sworn to your handmaid, saying, Your son Solomon shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then does Adonias reign?
Va, entre chez le roi David, et dis-lui: O roi, mon seigneur, n’as-tu pas fait serment à ta servante en disant: Salomon, ton fils, régnera après moi, et c’est lui qui s’assiéra sur mon trône? Pourquoi donc Adonias est-il devenu roi?
14 And behold, while you are still speaking there with the king, I also will come in after you, and will confirm your words.
Et voici, pendant que tu parleras là avec le roi, j’entrerai après toi, et je confirmerai tes paroles. »
15 So Bersabee went in to the king into the chamber: and the king was very old, and Abisag the Somanite was ministering to the king.
Bethsabée se rendit auprès du roi, dans sa chambre; le roi était très vieux, et Abisag, la Sunamite, servait le roi.
16 And Bersabee bowed, and did obeisance to the king; and the king said, What is your request?
Bethsabée s’inclina et se prosterna devant lui, et le roi dit: « Que veux-tu? »
17 And she said, My lord, you did swear by the Lord your God to your handmaid, saying, Your son Solomon shall reign after me, and shall sit upon my throne.
Elle lui répondit: « Mon seigneur, tu as fait serment à ta servante par Yahweh, ton Dieu, en disant: Salomon, ton fils, régnera après moi, et c’est lui qui sera assis sur mon trône.
18 And now, behold, Adonias reigns, and you, my lord, O king, know [it] not.
Et maintenant, voici qu’Adonias est devenu roi, et cependant, toi, ô roi mon seigneur, tu l’ignores!
19 And he has sacrificed calves and lambs and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king's sons, and Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander-in-chief of the host; but Solomon your servant he has not called.
Il a immolé des bœufs, des veaux gras et des brebis en grand nombre; et il a invité tous les fils du roi, le prêtre Abiathar, et Joab, chef de l’armée, mais il n’a pas invité Salomon, ton serviteur.
20 And you, my lord, O king, —the eyes of all Israel [are] upon you, to tell them who shall sit upon the throne of my lord the king after him.
Cependant, ô roi mon seigneur, tout Israël a les yeux sur toi, pour que tu fasses connaître qui doit s’asseoir sur le trône du roi mon seigneur après lui.
21 And it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and Solomon my son shall be offenders.
Autrement, lorsque le roi mon seigneur sera couché avec ses pères, il arrivera que nous serons, moi et mon fils Salomon, traités comme des criminels. »
22 And behold, while she was yet talking with the king, Nathan the prophet came. And it was reported to the king,
Comme elle parlait encore avec le roi, voici que Nathan, le prophète, arriva.
23 Behold, Nathan the prophet [is here]: and he came in to the king's presence, and did obeisance to the king with his face to the ground.
On l’annonça au roi, en disant: « Voici Nathan, le prophète. » Il entra en présence du roi et se prosterna devant lui, le visage contre terre;
24 And Nathan said, My lord, O king, did you say, Adonias shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?
et Nathan dit: « O roi, mon seigneur, tu as donc dit: Adonias régnera après moi et il s’assiéra sur mon trône!
25 For he has gone down today, and has sacrificed calves and lambs and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king's sons, and the chiefs of the army, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and they said, [Long] live king Adonias.
Car il est descendu aujourd’hui, il a immolé des bœufs, des veaux gras et des brebis en quantité, et il a invité tous les fils du roi, les chefs de l’armée et le prêtre Abiathar. Et voici qu’ils mangent et boivent devant lui, et ils disent: Vive le roi Adonias!
26 But he has not invited me your servant, and Sadoc the priest, and Banaeas the son of Jodae, and Solomon your servant.
Mais il n’a invité ni moi, ton serviteur, ni le prêtre Sadoc, ni Banaïas, fils de Joïadas, ni Salomon, ton serviteur.
27 Has this matter happened by the authority of my lord the king, and have you not made known to your servant who shall sit upon the throne of my lord the king after him?
Est-ce bien par la volonté de mon seigneur le roi qu’une telle chose a lieu, sans que tu aies fait connaître à tes serviteurs qui doit s’asseoir sur le trône du roi mon seigneur, après lui? »
28 And king David answered and said, Call me Bersabee: and she came in before the king, and stood before him.
Le roi David répondit et dit: « Appelez-moi Bethsabée. » Elle entra devant le roi et se présenta devant le roi.
29 And the king swore, and said, [As] the Lord lives who redeemed my soul out of all affliction,
Et le roi fit ce serment: « Vive Yahweh qui m’a délivré de toutes les adversités!
30 as I swore to you by the Lord God of Israel, saying, Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead, so will I do this day.
Ce que je t’ai juré par Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël, en disant: Salomon, ton fils, régnera après moi, et il s’assiéra sur mon trône à ma place, — je le ferai en ce jour. »
31 And Bersabee bowed with her face to the ground, and did obeisance to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever.
Bethsabée s’inclina le visage contre terre et se prosterna devant le roi; et elle dit: « Vive à jamais mon seigneur, le roi David! »
32 And king David said, Call me Sadoc the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Banaeas the son of Jodae: and they came in before the king.
Le roi David dit: « Appelez-moi le prêtre Sadoc, Nathan le prophète, et Banaïas, fils de Joïadas. » Lorsqu’ils furent entrés en présence du roi,
33 And the king said to them, Take the servants of your lord with you, and mount my son Solomon upon my own mule, and bring him down to Gion.
le roi leur dit: « Prenez avec vous les serviteurs de votre maître, faites monter mon fils Salomon sur ma mule, et vous le ferez descendre à Gihon.
34 And there let Sadoc the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him to be king over Israel, and do you sound the trumpet, and you shall say, Let king Solomon live.
Là, le prêtre Sadoc et Nathan le prophète l’oindront pour roi sur Israël; et vous sonnerez de la trompette et vous direz: Vive le roi Salomon!
35 And he shall sit upon my throne, and reign in my stead: and I have given charge that he should be for a prince over Israel and Juda.
Puis vous remonterez après lui; il viendra s’asseoir sur mon trône, et il régnera à ma place, car c’est lui que j’établis pour être chef d’Israël et de Juda. »
36 And Banaeas the son of Jodae answered the king and said, So let it be: may the Lord God of my lord the king confirm [it].
Banaïas, fils de Joïadas, répondit au roi: « Amen! Qu’ainsi l’ordonne Yahweh, le Dieu de mon seigneur le roi!
37 As the Lord was with my lord the king, so let him be with Solomon, and let him exalt his throne beyond the throne of my lord king David.
Comme Yahweh a été avec mon seigneur le roi, qu’il soit de même avec Salomon, et qu’il élève son trône au-dessus du trône de mon seigneur le roi David! »
38 And Sadoc the priest went down, and Nathan the prophet, and Banaeas son of Jodae, and the Cherethite, and the Phelethite, and they mounted Solomon upon the mule of king David, and led him away to Gion.
Le prêtre Sadoc descendit avec Nathan le prophète, Banaïas, fils de Joïadas, les Céréthiens et les Phéléthiens, et, ayant fait monter Salomon sur la mule du roi David, ils le menèrent à Gihon.
39 And Sadoc the priest took the horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon, and blew the trumpet; and all the people said, Let king Solomon live.
Le prêtre Sadoc prit dans le tabernacle la corne d’huile, et il oignit Salomon; on sonna de la trompette et tout le peuple dit: « Vive le roi Salomon! »
40 And all the people went up after him, and they danced in choirs, and rejoiced with great joy, and the earth quaked with their voice.
Puis tout le peuple monta après lui. Le peuple jouait de la flûte et se livrait à une grande joie; la terre se fendait au bruit de leurs clameurs.
41 And Adonias and all his guests heard, and they had [just] left off eating: and Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, and said, What [means] the voice of the city in tumult?
Adonias entendis ce bruit, ainsi que tous les conviés qui étaient avec lui, au moment où ils achevaient leur festin. En entendant le son de la trompette, Joab dit: « Pourquoi ce bruit de la ville en émoi? »
42 While he was yet speaking, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came in: and Adonias said, Come in, for you are a mighty man, and [you come] to bring glad tidings.
Il parlait encore, et voici que Jonathas, fils de prêtre Abiathar, arriva. Adonias lui dit: « Viens, car tu es un brave et porteur de bonnes nouvelles. »
43 And Jonathan answered and said, Verily our lord king David has made Solomon king:
Jonathas répondit et dit à Adonias: « Oui, vraiment! notre seigneur le roi David a fait roi Salomon.
44 and the king has sent with him Sadoc the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Banaeas the son of Jodae, and the Cherethite, and the Phelethite, and they have mounted him on the king's mule;
Le roi a envoyé avec lui le prêtre Sadoc, Nathan le prophète, Banaïas, fils de Joïadas, les Céréthiens et les Phéléthiens, et ils l’ont fait monter sur la mule du roi.
45 and Sadoc the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him in Gion, and have gone up thence rejoicing, and the city resounded: this [is] the sound which you have heard.
Le prêtre Sadoc et Nathan le prophète l’ont oint pour roi à Gihon; de là ils sont remontés remontés joyeux, et la ville est en émoi: c’est là le bruit que vous avez entendu.
46 And Solomon is seated upon the throne of the kingdom.
Salomon s’est même assis sur le trône royal.
47 And the servants of the king have gone in to bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than your name, and make his throne greater than your throne; and the king worshipped upon his bed.
Et même les serviteurs du roi sont venus pour bénir notre seigneur le roi David, en disant: Que ton Dieu rende le nom de Salomon plus grand que ton nom, et qu’il élève son trône au-dessus de ton trône! Et le roi s’est prosterné sur son lit.
48 Moreover thus said the king, Blessed [be] the Lord God of Israel, who has this day appointed one of my seed sitting on my throne, and my eyes see it.
Et même le roi a parlé ainsi: Béni soit Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël, qui m’a donné aujourd’hui un successeur sur mon trône, afin que je puisse le voir de mes yeux!»
49 And all the guests of Adonias were dismayed, and every man went his way.
Tous les conviés d’Adonias furent saisis de terreur; ils se levèrent et s’en allèrent chacun de son côté.
50 And Adonias feared because of Solomon, and arose, and departed, and laid hold on the horns of the altar.
Adonias, ayant peur de Salomon, se leva et s’en alla, et il saisit les cornes de l’autel.
51 And it was reported to Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonias fears king Solomon, and holds the horns of the altar, saying, Let Solomon swear to me this day, that he will not kill his servant with the sword.
On l’annonça à Salomon en ces termes: « Voici qu’Adonias a peur du roi Salomon, et voici qu’il a saisi les cornes de l’autel en disant: Que le roi Salomon me jure aujourd’hui qu’il ne fera pas mourir son serviteur par l’épée! »
52 And Solomon said, If he should be a valiant man, there shall not a hair of his fall to the ground; but if evil be found in him, he shall die.
Salomon dit: « S’il se montre homme brave, il ne tombera pas à terre un de ses cheveux; mais s’il se trouve du mal en lui, il mourra. »
53 And king Solomon sent, and they brought him away from the altar; and he went in and did obeisance to king Solomon: and Solomon said to him, Go to your house.
Et le roi Salomon envoya des gens qui le firent descendre d’auprès de l’autel. Et Adonias vint se prosterner devant le roi Salomon; et Salomon lui dit: « Va dans ta maison. »
