Deuteronomy 20

1 And if thou shouldest go forth to war against thine enemies, and shouldest see horse, and rider, and a people more numerous than thyself; thou shalt not be afraid of them, for the Lord thy God [is] with thee, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

QUANDO tu uscirai in guerra contro a' tuoi nemici, e vedrai cavalli e carri, [e] gente in maggior numero di te, non temer però di loro; conciossiachè il Signore Iddio tuo, che t'ha tratto fuor del paese di Egitto, [sia] teco.

2 And it shall come to pass whenever thou shalt draw nigh to battle, that the priest shall draw nigh and speak to the people, and shall say to them,

E quando vi appresserete per dar la battaglia, facciasi il Sacerdote innanzi, e parli al popolo,

3 Hear, O Israel; ye are going this day to battle against your enemies: let not your heart faint, fear not, neither be confounded, neither turn aside from their face.

e dicagli: Ascolta, Israele: Voi [siete] oggi vicini a venire a battaglia co' vostri nemici; il cuor vostro non s'invilisca; non temiate, e non vi smarrite, nè vi spaventate per tema di loro;

4 For [it is] the Lord your God who advances with you, to fight with you against your enemies, [and] to save you.

perciocchè il Signore Iddio vostro [è] quel che cammina con voi, per combatter per voi contro a' vostri nemici, per salvarvi.

5 And the scribes shall speak to the people, saying, What man [is] he that has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the war, and another man dedicate it.

Parlino eziandio gli Ufficiali al popolo, dicendo: Chi [è] colui che abbia edificata una casa nuova, e non l'abbia ancora dedicata? vada, e ritorni a casa sua, che talora egli non muoia nella battaglia, e un altro dedichi la sua casa.

6 And what man [is] he that has planted a vineyard, and not been made merry with it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man be made merry with it.

E chi [è] colui che abbia piantata una vigna, e non l'abbia ancora cominciata a godere in uso comune? vada, e ritorni a casa sua, che talora egli non muoia nella battaglia, e un altro cominci a goderla.

7 And what man [is] he that has betrothed a wife, and has not taken her? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.

E chi [è] colui che abbia sposata una moglie, e non l'abbia ancora menata? vada, e ritorni a casa sua, che talora egli non muoia nella battaglia, e un altro la meni.

8 And the scribes shall speak further to the people, and say, What man [is] he that fears and is cowardly in his heart? Let him go and return to his house, lest he make the heart of his brother fail, as his own.

Gli Ufficiali parlino ancora al popolo, e dicano: Chi [è] timido, e di poco cuore? vada e ritorni a casa sua, acciocchè i suoi fratelli non s'inviliscano di cuore come esso.

9 And it shall come to pass when the scribes shall have ceased speaking to the people, that they shall appoint generals of the army to be leaders of the people.

E, dopo che gli Ufficiali avranno finito di parlare al popolo, ordinino i Capi delle schiere in capo del popolo.

10 And if thou shalt draw nigh to a city to overcome them by war, then call them out peaceably.

Quando tu ti accosterai a una città per combatterla, chiamala prima a pace.

11 If then they should answer peaceably to thee, and open to thee, it shall be that all the people found in it shall be tributary and subject to thee.

E se ti dà risposta di pace, e ti apre [le porte], tutto il popolo che in essa si troverà, siati tributario e soggetto.

12 But if they will not hearken to thee, but wage war against thee, thou shalt invest it;

Ma, s'ella non fa pace teco, anzi guerreggia contro a te, assediala;

13 until the Lord thy God shall deliver it into thy hands, and thou shalt smite every male of it with the edge of the sword:

e il Signore Iddio tuo te la darà nelle mani; allora metti a fil di spada tutti i maschi.

14 except the women and the stuff: and all the cattle, and whatsoever shall be in the city, and all the plunder thou shalt take as spoil for thyself, and shalt eat all the plunder of thine enemies whom the Lord thy God gives thee.

Predati sol le femmine, e i piccoli fanciulli, e il bestiame, e tutto quello che sarà nella città, tutte le spoglie di essa; e mangia della preda de' tuoi nemici che il Signore Iddio tuo ti avrà data.

15 Thus shalt thou do to all the cities that are very far off from thee, not [being] of the cities of these nations which the Lord thy God gives thee to inherit their land.

Fai così a tutte le città che [saranno] molto lontane da te, che non [saranno] delle città di queste genti.

16 [Of these] ye shall not take any thing alive;

Ma delle città di questi popoli, le quali il Signore Iddio tuo ti dà per eredità, non iscampar la vita ad alcun'anima vivente;

17 but ye shall surely curse them, the Chettite, and the Amorite, and the Chananite, and the Pherezite, and the Evite, and the Jebusite, and the Gergesite; as the Lord thy God commanded thee:

anzi del tutto distruggi que' [popoli] al modo dell'interdetto; gli Hittei, e gli Amorrei, e i Cananei, e i Ferizzei, e gli Hivvei, e i Gebusei; come il Signore Iddio tuo ti ha comandato;

18 that they may not teach you to do all their abominations, which they did to their gods, and [so] ye should sin before the Lord your God.

acciocchè non v'insegnino a far secondo tutte le loro abbominazioni che hanno usate inverso i loro iddii; e che voi non pecchiate contro al Signore Iddio vostro.

19 And if thou shouldest besiege a city many days to prevail against it by war to take it, thou shalt not destroy its trees, by applying an iron tool to them, but thou shalt eat of it, and shalt not cut it down: Is the tree that is in the field a man, to enter before thee into the work of the siege?

Quando tu terrai l'assedio a una città lungo tempo, combattendola per pigliarla, non guastar gli alberi di essa, avventando la scure contro a essi; perciocchè d'essi potrai mangiare, e però non tagliarli; perciocchè è forse l'albero della campagna un uomo, per entrar dentro alla fortezza, [fuggendo] d'innanzi a te?

20 But the tree which thou knowest to be not fruit-bearing, this thou shalt destroy and cut down; and thou shalt construct a mound against the city, which makes war against thee, until it be delivered up.

Sol potrai guastare, e tagliar gli alberi che tu conoscerai non essere alberi da mangiare; e ne potrai fabbricar ciò che sarà necessario all'assedio della città che guerreggerà contro a te, fin ch'ella caggia.
