Acts 28
1 And when we were safe, we made the discovery that the island was named Melita.
S'étant donc sauvés, ils reconnurent alors que l'île s'appelait Malte.
2 And the simple people living there were uncommonly kind to us, for they made a fire for us, and took us in, because it was raining and cold.
Et les Barbares usèrent d'une singulière humanité envers nous, car ils allumèrent un grand feu, et nous reçurent tous, à cause de la pluie qui nous pressait, et à cause du froid.
3 But when Paul had got some sticks together and put them on the fire, a snake came out, because of the heat, and gave him a bite on the hand.
Et Paul ayant ramassé quelque quantité de sarments, comme il les eut mis au feu, une vipère en sortit à cause de la chaleur, et lui saisit la main.
4 And when the people saw it hanging on his hand, they said to one another, Without doubt this man has put someone to death, and though he has got safely away from the sea, God will not let him go on living.
Et quand les Barbares virent cette bête pendant à sa main, ils se dirent l'un à l'autre: certainement cet homme est un meurtrier; puisqu'après être échappé de la mer, la vengeance ne permet pas qu'il vive.
5 But shaking off the beast into the fire, he got no damage.
Mais Paul ayant secoué la bête dans le feu, il n'en reçut aucun mal;
6 But they had the idea that they would see him becoming ill, or suddenly falling down dead; but after waiting a long time, and seeing that no damage came to him, changing their opinion, they said he was a god.
Au lieu qu'ils s'attendaient qu'il dût enfler, ou tomber subitement mort. Mais quand ils eurent longtemps attendu, et qu'ils eurent vu qu'il ne lui en arrivait aucn mal, ils changèrent [de langage], et dirent que c'était un Dieu.
7 Now near that place there was some land, the property of the chief man of the island, who was named Publius; who very kindly took us into his house as his guests for three days.
Or en cet endroit-là étaient les possesions du principal de l'île, nommé Publius, qui nous reçut et nous logea durant trois jours avec beaucoup de bonté.
8 And the father of Publius was ill, with a disease of the stomach; to whom Paul went, and put his hands on him, with prayer, and made him well.
Et il arriva que le père de Publius était au lit malade de la fièvre et de la dyssenterie, et Paul l'étant allé voir, il fit la prière, lui imposa les mains, et le guérit.
9 And when this took place, all the others in the island who had diseases came and were made well.
Ce qui étant arrivé, tous les autres malades de l'île vinrent à lui, et ils furent guéris.
10 Then they gave us great honour, and, when we went away, they put into the ship whatever things we were in need of.
Lesquels aussi nous firent de grands honneurs, et à notre départ nous fournirent ce qui nous était nécessaire.
11 And after three months we went to sea in a ship of Alexandria sailing under the sign of the Dioscuri, which had been at the island for the winter.
Trois mois après nous partîmes sur un navire d'Alexandrie qui avait hiverné dans l'île, et qui avait pour enseigne Castor et Pollux.
12 And going into the harbour at Syracuse, we were waiting there for three days.
Et étant arrivés à Syracuse, nous y demeurâmes trois jours.
13 And from there, going about in a curve, we came to Rhegium: and after one day a south wind came up and on the day after we came to Puteoli:
De là en côtoyant, nous arrivâmes à Rhège; et un jour après, le vent du Midi s'étant levé, nous vînmes le deuxième jour à Pouzzoles;
14 Where we came across some of the brothers, who kept us with them for seven days; and so we came to Rome.
Où ayant trouvé des frères, nous fûmes priés de demeurer avec eux sept jours; et ensuite nous arrivâmes à Rome.
15 And the brothers, when they had news of us, came out from town as far as Appii Forum and the Three Taverns to have a meeting with us: and Paul, seeing them, gave praise to God and took heart.
Et quand les frères qui y étaient eurent reçu de nos nouvelles, ils vinrent au-devant de nous jusques au Marché d'Appius, et aux Trois-boutiques; et Paul les voyant, rendit grâces à Dieu, et prit courage.
16 And when we came into Rome, they let Paul have a house for himself and the armed man who kept watch over him.
Et lorsque nous fûmes arrivés à Rome, le centenier livra les prisonniers au Préfet du Prétoire; mais quant à Paul, il lui fut permis de demeurer à part avec un soldat qui le gardait.
17 Then after three days he sent for the chief men of the Jews: and when they had come together, he said to them, My brothers, though I had done nothing against the people or the ways of our fathers, I was given, a prisoner from Jerusalem, into the hands of the Romans.
Or il arriva trois jours après, que Paul convoqua les principaux des Juifs; et quand ils furent venus, il leur dit: hommes frères! quoique je n'aie rien commis contre le peuple ni contre les coutumes des Pères, toutefois j'ai été arrêté prisonnier à Jérusalem, et livré entre les mains des Romains,
18 Who, when they had put questions to me, were ready to let me go free, because there was no cause of death in me.
Qui après m'avoir examiné me voulaient relâcher, parce qu'il n'y avait en moi aucun crime digne de mort.
19 But when the Jews made protest against it, I had to put my cause into Caesar's hands; not because I have anything to say against my nation.
Mais les Juifs s'y opposant, j'ai été contraint d'en appeler à César; sans que j'aie pourtant dessein d'accuser ma nation.
20 But for this reason I sent for you, to see and have talk with you: for because of the hope of Israel I am in these chains.
C'est donc là le sujet pour lequel je vous ai appelés, afin de vous voir et de vous parler; car c'est pour l'espérance d'Israël que je suis chargé de cette chaîne.
21 And they said to him, We have not had letters from Judaea about you, and no one of the brothers has come to us here to give an account or say any evil about you.
Mais ils lui répondirent: nous n'avons point reçu de Lettres de Judée qui parlent de toi; ni aucun des frères n'est venu qui ait rapporté ou dit quelque mal de toi.
22 But we have a desire to give hearing to your opinion: for as to this form of religion, we have knowledge that in all places it is attacked.
Cependant nous entendrons volontiers de toi quel est ton sentiment; car quant à cette secte, il nous est connu qu'on la contredit partout.
23 And when a day had been fixed, they came to his house in great numbers; and he gave them teaching, giving witness to the kingdom of God, and having discussions with them about Jesus, from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning till evening.
Et après lui avoir assigné un jour, plusieurs vinrent auprès de lui dans son logis, auxquels il expliquait par plusieurs témoignages le Royaume de Dieu, et depuis le matin jusqu'au soir il les portait à croire ce qui concerne Jésus, tant par la Loi de Moïse que par les Prophètes.
24 And some were in agreement with what he said, but some had doubts.
Et les uns furent persuadés par les choses qu'il disait; et les autres n'y croyaient point.
25 And they went away, for there was a division among them after Paul had said this one thing: Well did the Holy Spirit say by the prophet Isaiah to your fathers,
C'est pourquoi n'étant pas d'accord entre eux, ils se retirèrent, après que Paul leur eut dit cette parole: le Saint-Esprit a bien parlé à nos Pères par Esaïe le Prophète,
26 Go to this people and say, Though you give ear, you will not get knowledge; and seeing, you will see, but the sense will not be clear to you:
En disant: va vers ce peuple, et [lui] dis: vous écouterez de vos oreilles, et vous n'entendrez point; et en regardant vous verrez, et vous n'apercevrez point.
27 For the heart of this people has become fat and their ears are slow in hearing and their eyes are shut; for fear that they might see with their eyes and give hearing with their ears and become wise in their hearts and be turned again to me, so that I might make them well.
Car le cœur de ce peuple est engraissé; et ils ont ouï dur de leurs oreilles, et ont fermé leurs yeux; de peur qu'ils ne voient des yeux, qu'ils n'entendent des oreilles, qu'ils ne comprennent du cœur, qu'ils ne se convertissent, et que je ne les guérisse.
28 Be certain, then, that the salvation of God is sent to the Gentiles, and they will give hearing.
Sachez donc que ce salut de Dieu est envoyé aux Gentils, et ils l'entendront.
Quand il eut dit ces choses, les Juifs se retirèrent d'avec lui, y ayant une grande contestation entre eux.
30 And for the space of two years, Paul was living in the house of which he had the use, and had talk with all those who went in to see him,
Mais Paul demeura deux ans entiers dans une maison qu'il avait louée pour lui, où il recevait tous ceux qui le venaient voir,
31 Preaching the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ without fear, and no orders were given that he was not to do so.
Prêchant le Royaume de Dieu, et enseignant les choses qui regardent le Seigneur Jésus-Christ avec toute liberté de parler, [et] sans aucun empêchement.
