Romans 2
1 Therefore you are without excuse, O man, whoever you are who judge. For in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself. For you who judge practice the same things.
Toi donc, ô homme, qui que tu sois, qui juge les autres, tu es inexcusable; car, en les jugeant, tu te condamnes toi-même, puisque toi qui les juges, tu fais les mêmes choses.
2 We know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.
Or, nous savons que le jugement de Dieu contre ceux qui se rendent coupables de telles actions est conforme à la vérité.
3 Do you think this, O man who judges those who practice such things, and do the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?
Penses-tu donc, toi qui juges ceux qui commettent de tels actes et qui les commets, que tu échapperas toi-même au jugement de Dieu?
4 Or do you despise the riches of his goodness, forbearance, and patience, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?
Ou méprises-tu les richesses de sa bonté, de sa patience, de sa longanimité, et ne reconnais-tu pas que la bonté de Dieu te convie à la repentance?
5 But according to your hardness and unrepentant heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath, revelation, and of the righteous judgment of God,
Par ton endurcissement et par l'impénitence de ton coeur, tu t'amasses un trésor de colère pour le jour de la colère et de la manifestation du juste jugement de Dieu,
6 who “will pay back to everyone according to their works:”
qui rendra à chacun selon ses oeuvres:
7 to those who by perseverance in well-doing seek for glory, honor, and incorruptibility, consummate (aiōnios g166) life;
la vie éternelle à ceux qui, en persévérant à faire le bien, cherchent la gloire, l'honneur et l'immortalité; (aiōnios g166)
8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, will be wrath, indignation,
mais à ceux qui, dans un esprit de contradiction, désobéissent à la vérité et obéissent à l'injustice, — à eux la colère et l'indignation!
9 oppression, and anguish on every soul of man who does evil, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Oui, détresse et angoisse pour toute âme d'homme qui fait le mal, pour le Juif d'abord, et aussi pour le Grec;
10 But glory, honor, and peace go to every man who does good, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
mais gloire, honneur et paix à tout homme qui fait le bien, au Juif d'abord, et aussi au Grec!
11 For there is no partiality with God.
Car, devant Dieu, il n'y a point d'acception de personnes.
12 For as many as have sinned without the law will also perish without the law. As many as have sinned under the law will be judged by the law.
Tous ceux qui auront péché sans la loi, périront aussi sans la loi; et tous ceux qui auront péché ayant la loi, seront jugés par la loi;
13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law will be justified
car ce ne sont pas ceux qui entendent lire la loi qui sont justes devant Dieu, mais ceux-là seuls qui pratiquent la loi seront justifiés.
14 (for when Gentiles who do not have the law do by nature the things of the law, these, not having the law, are a law to themselves,
En effet, quand les Païens, qui n'ont pas la loi, font naturellement les choses que la loi commande, ces hommes, qui n'ont pas la loi, se tiennent lieu de loi à eux-mêmes.
15 in that they show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience testifying with them, and their thoughts among themselves accusing or else excusing them)
Ils font voir que l'oeuvre commandée par la loi est écrite dans leurs coeurs: leur propre conscience en témoigne, et leurs pensées tantôt les accusent, tantôt même les défendent.
16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men, according to my Good News, by Jesus Christ.
C'est ce qui apparaîtra le jour où, selon mon Évangile, Dieu jugera par Jésus-Christ les actions secrètes des hommes.
17 Indeed you bear the name of a Jew, rest on the law, glory in God,
Mais toi, qui portes le nom de Juif, qui te reposes sur la loi, qui te glorifies de ton Dieu,
18 know his will, and approve the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law,
toi qui connais sa volonté et qui sais discerner la différence des choses, instruit que tu es par la loi;
19 and are confident that you yourself are a guide of the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,
toi qui te flattes d'être le conducteur des aveugles, la lumière de ceux qui sont dans les ténèbres,
20 a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of babies, having in the law the form of knowledge and of the truth.
le docteur des ignorants, le maître des simples, ayant dans la loi la règle de la connaissance et de la vérité,
21 You therefore who teach another, do not you teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal?
toi donc qui enseignes les autres, tu ne t'enseignes pas toi-même!- Toi, qui prêches qu'on ne doit pas dérober, tu dérobes!
22 You who say a man should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?
Toi, qui dis qu'il ne faut pas commettre d'adultère, tu commets l'adultère! Toi, qui as en abomination les idoles, tu t'empares de leurs dépouilles!
23 You who glory in the law, do you dishonor God by disobeying the law?
Toi, qui te glorifies de la loi, tu déshonores Dieu par la transgression de la loi!
24 For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” just as it is written.
En effet, «le nom de Dieu est blasphémé à cause de vous parmi les nations», — comme dit l'Ecriture.
25 For circumcision indeed profits, if you are a doer of the law, but if you are a transgressor of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.
Sans doute, la circoncision est utile, si tu pratiques la loi; mais si tu transgresses la loi, tu n'es plus, avec ta circoncision, qu'un incirconcis.
26 If therefore the uncircumcised keep the ordinances of the law, will not his uncircumcision be accounted as circumcision?
Si donc l'incirconcis observe les commandements de la loi, son incirconcision ne sera-t-elle pas tenue pour circoncision?
27 Will not those who are physically uncircumcised, but fulfill the law, judge you, who with the letter and circumcision are a transgressor of the law?
Et celui qui, tout en restant incirconcis, accomplit cependant la loi, te jugera, toi qui, avec la lettre de la loi et la circoncision, es transgresseur de la loi.
28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh;
Car celui-là n'est pas Juif, qui ne l'est qu'au dehors, et la circoncision n'est pas celle qui se fait extérieurement dans la chair;
29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men, but from God.
mais celui-là est Juif qui l'est au dedans, et la vraie circoncision est celle du coeur, faite selon l'esprit, et non selon la lettre. Un tel Juif tire sa louange, non pas des hommes, mais de Dieu.
